Rain, cold weather shorten Havre Invitational

Despite being early September, weather wreaked havoc with sporting events in Havre this past weekend. Nowhere was that more obvious than at the Havre High Invitational golf tournament Saturday at Beaver Creek Golf Course.

The tournament, which was scheduled to be an 18-hole event, was hampered by poor weather early on and was eventually washed out by heavy rains that pounded the area later in the morning. Only the boys side of the tournament was able to even complete nine holes. More than half of the female competitors did not finish the front nine.

"We're obviously very disappointed that we couldn't continue to play," said Havre High head coach Carla Bolken. "Even though the rain stopped an hour after we got the kids off the course, it was soaked out there and so were the kids. We just couldn't send them back out there.

"It is always disappointing to have weather problems," she added. "But when it is our tournament and our kids have only one chance to play at home it is a big disappointment."

Despite only playing nine holes, the HHS boys turned in a solid performance led by Brandon Job and Anthony Wirtzberger. Both players shot 3-over-par 39s and Job was announced the winner of the tournament via a tie breaker.

"Brandon is really playing well right now," Bolken said. "Both he and Anthony had great scores for how bad the weather was.

"I was really pleased with a lot of the scores our boys turned in," she added. "The weather was terrible and we had some kids really shoot some nice scores."

Junior's Matt Hedstrom and Billy Wagner also placed in the top five. Hedstrom finished with a 41 on the front nine, while Wagner came in with a 42. Senior Chase Castloo also posted a solid number, firing a 44.

The only non-Havre players to finish in the top five were from Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Scott Hovestad fired a 40. Teammates Brock Friesen and Cody Mitchell both shot 42 to tie for fifth place with Wagner.

The Havre High blue team captured the abbreviated team title with a 168, while Swift Current came in second with a 172. The Havre High white team tied with the CMR junior varsity squad, each with a 184.

The girls tournament was even more incomplete than the boys. Only eight players posted official nine-hole scores. Havre High junior Ali Ward shot a 50 to take home first-place honors, while teammate Haley McLain shot a 55, which was good enough for fifth place. Stacy Sheppard was the only other HHS girl to complete her front nine. Sheppard fired a 56. Tabitha Beck and Avery Hansen did not finish their rounds.

The other places in the top five were Kaitlyn Blackmer of Swift Current with a 51 and Kim Reid and Colleen Rau of Lewistown. The two shot 53 and 54, respectively.

The Havre High golf team will be hoping for improved weather when its heads to the prestigious Helena Invitational on Thursday. The tournament will be a two-day 36-hole event.

"It is definitely a disappointing day because of the rain and the bad weather," Bolken said. "But all of our kids are still playing really good golf right now and we're excited about getting back out there when we go to Helena."
