FREDERICK RICE obituary

Frederick "Fred" Erving Rice, 84, of Havre, died on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at Northern Montana Hospital of natural causes.

A memorial service will be held today at 3 p.m. at the Holland & Bonine Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Robert Grosch officiating. Burial of the ashes will

take place at a later date. Following the service, there will be a luncheon at St. Jude Parish Center.

Fred was born Sept. 19, 1921 to Walter and Carrie Rice at Big Sandy. He attended Rice School.

Fred served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1939 and 1940 building the Fort Peck Dam and in Winifred. He served his country in the Army Corps of Engineers from 1942 to 1945 in New Guinea, Southern Philippines.

Fred farmed and ranched in Big Sandy in the Sheep Coulee area and also in Fairfield. In 1968, he moved his family to Havre and he worked for the North Central Cooperatives, driving fuel truck until his retirement in 1984.

Rice enjoyed hunting with his sons, fishing, spending time with his family and repairing anything that needed fixing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Alfred; sister, Ann; and granddaughter, Lisa Bloch.

Survivors include his wife, Therese "Terry" of Havre, who would have been celebrating their 52 anniversary on Oct. 17; children, Connie (Tom) Bloch of Williston, N.D., Kathy (Harold) Hedman of Miniature, Neb., Fred (Becky) Rice of Butte, Sandi (Edward) Cuerth of Chinook, Ken (Faith) Rice of Moccasin and Ed (Arleen) Rice of Havre; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Howard (Ruth) Rice of Shelby, George (Helen) Rice of Big Sandy; sisters, Betty (Clee) Cossart of Bonners Ferry, Idaho, Stella (George) Lamb of Saco, Florence (Gordy) Calhaun, Minneapolis and Alfreda Patera of Havre.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Shodair Children's Hospital in Helena, Shriners Children's Hospital in Spokane, Wash., or to a person's choice.

Holland & Bonine Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
