ELIZABETH MAFFIT obituary

Elizabeth Ann Maffit, 83, former longtime Havre resident, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, in Clancy.

A funeral service will be held at First Lutheran Church in Havre at 2 p.m. on Monday. Burial and graveside services will be at Highland Cemetery.

Liz was born Aug. 11, 1922, to Carter B. and Sylvia J. (Olness) Phelps in Homestead. After graduating from Medicine Lake High School in 1939, she moved to Havre, where she attend and received her registered nursing degree from the Sacred Heart Hospital's Nursing Program in 1943.

There she met and later eloped with Fayette C. Maffit on Dec. 22, 1943. They moved to Great Falls, where she worked at the Deaconess Hospital while Fay worked construction at Malmstrom Air Force Base for several years.

After the war, they returned to Havre, where Fay worked for H. Earle Clack & Co. and they began raising a family. She was a stay-at-home mom to Korrene (Dick Livesay) and Robert (JoAnn Swick). Later on, when Fay went into business under the name of Maffit Construction, she managed the office. With her young family as her primary focus, she kept her children so busy and active in anything and everything it left little room for anything else. Elizabeth actively supported youth academics, Scouting, sports, and church programs.

After Fay's death on Feb. 15, 1989, she moved to the Eagle Manor, where she enjoyed living and volunteering her time at the local senior citizen's center and the Havre Day Activity Center. Liz adored following the activities of her five grandchildren. She moved to Clancy in 1997 to be closer to her family. Her last years were spent at Evergreen Clancy where she received excellent care and compassion.

Survivors include her daughter, Korrene (Dick) Livesay; son, Robert (JoAnn Swick) Maffit; five grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.

The family requests memorials in Liz's name to the Havre Mental Health Day Activity Center or a charity of one's choice.

Holland & Bonine Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
