Alexander William Zygmond, 74, formerly of Havre, died Monday, July 4, 2005, at his sister's home in Havre surrounded by family after complications from lung cancer.
A memorial service in Alex's honor will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Jude's Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert D. Grosch officiating. Burial will follow at the
Calvary Cemetery. A fellowship luncheon will be held at the St. Jude Parish Center immediately after the service at graveside.
Alex was born Feb. 3, 1931, in Havre to Alex and Olga (Kosik) Zygmond. He attended St. Jude School and graduated from Havre High School. He enlisted into the U.S. Army in 1951 and was honorably discharged as corporal in 1953. He then attended Northern Montana College and graduated with his teaching degree.
Alex taught high school science in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, for one year. He went to work for the Great Northern/Burlington Northern Railway as a conductor and retired in 1993.
Alex met Marcia Tade in Glasgow and the couple married Dec. 2, 1974, in Anchorage, Alaska. Alex enjoyed fishing, crossword puzzles, bird watching and gardening. He and Marcia worked in their yard together and had a beautiful garden. He was a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, Eagles and the Elks.
Alex and Marcia moved to Mesa, Ariz., in 2002 and were in Havre for a family reunion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jack and John Zygmond; and sister, Jane Callahan.
Survivors include his wife, Marcia Zygmond of Mesa, Ariz .; daughter, Mickie Simonson of Helena; sons, Steve (Dana) Johnson and Dino (Vickie) Johnson, both of Bozeman; sister, Margaret Webb of Havre; brothers, Joe (Zonie) Zygmond of Havre and Lou (Mike) Zygmond of Billings; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Les Zygmond of Helena; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorials in Alex's honor are suggested to Bear Paw Hospice, St. Jude Educational Trust Fund or to a charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are entrusted to Holland & Bonine Funeral Home.
