ED VOGEL obituary

HAINES, Alaska - Edmund Adolph Vogel, 87, of Haines died Saturday, April 28, 2005, at his residence of advancing leukemia.

A graveside service was held May 2 at Jones Point Cemetery at Haines.

Ed was born Dec. 21, 1917, at Hingham. He grew up on the family wheat farm. He joined the U.S. Army in 1939 and was stationed in Alaska,

building runways at Annette and Yakutat en route to the Aleutian Islands. He reached the rank of master sergeant. Following the war, he returned to Alaska and logged in Ketchikan.

Ed married Lola Kidd in Havre in June 1947. They honeymooned to Juneau, Alaska, where Ed took a job with Northern Commercial, traveling across southeast Alaska. He also worked in automotive repair and helped build one of the first catamarans in Alaska.

The family moved to Haines, Alaska, in 1959. He held a variety of jobs, including running the garage at Connor's Motors. He worked as a millwright for Alaska Forest Products and worked as custodian for Haines Public Schools. He also worked as a machinist for the White Pass Railroad in Skagway. He opened Vogel's Repair Shop.

Vogel served on the Haines City Council. He also served as commander of the local American Legion Lynn Canal Post No. 12, in which he was active for more than 40 years. He had been a post commander.

Vogel's interests included local sightseeing, gardening with wild Alaska berries and cherries, reading and working crossword puzzles. He enjoyed working with his hands and made many wooden items and latch hook rugs. Ed enjoyed looking at wildlife. The day before he died, he dragged his wife out of bed to show her three moose in the their yard.

Vogel was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Phillip Vogel; and son, Rex Vogel.

Survivors include his wife, Lola; children, David (Jeanie) Vogel of Skagway, Alaska, Judy (Rich) Bryan of Irving, Texas, and Susan (Brian) Cudnik of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren; and brothers, Raymond and Samuel Vogel and their families of Havre.
