LAURA SCHUBERT obituary

CHINOOK - Laura Lucilla Matchett Kulp Schubert, 90, died as a result of cancer on April 21, 2005, at the Big Sandy Medical Center.

The funeral service was set for today at 11 a.m. in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel in Chinook, with burial following in Kuper Memorial Cemetery.

Laura was born Dec. 16, 1914, in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, to George and Annie (Hodgens) Matchett. Her family moved to the United States when she was 18 months old. She became a citizen at age 8, along with her three brothers and four sisters. The family lived in many small towns in northeastern Montana. She went on to be the only child out of her siblings to graduate from high school.

In 1937, she married Harold Everett Kulp. They had two children, Shirley and Everett. After Harold died in 1947, they moved from Washington to Chinook to be near her mother and siblings. She met and married Oliver Schubert in 1949. Her family increased by six boys and a girl. Twins Ken and Penny, followed by Debra Kay, were born to this union.

Laura was a beautician, a nurse's aide at Sweet Memorial Nursing Home and Dr. Robert Leeds' receptionist. Laura loved her yard with lots of flowers and always kept a big garden. She was an expert at canning everything from garden vegetables to fruit, fish and venison. She was always prepared at mealtime with something delicious in the big hot water bath kettle, which was her regular cooking pot, and many loaves of bread every meal to feed her large family. When she had a spare minute she enjoyed her fancy needlework, crocheting being her favorite. She also enjoyed bowling and fishing and was an avid reader.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Harold Kulp and Oliver Schubert; son, Everett Kulp; daughter-in-law, JoAnn Schubert; siblings and in-laws Annie Thielke, Walter Matchett, Tom and Dorothy Matchett, Eva and Adam Bergtall, Ruth and Mark Haugen, and Florence and Edwin York; and grandchildren, Samantha Jarvis, Stana Birdwell and Jeff Schubert.

Laura is survived by her children: Alan (Joyce) Schubert of Great Falls; Ronald (Myrt) Schubert and Jack (Dorothy), all of Havre; Clifford (Garth) Schubert of Covina, Calif.; Gordon (Laurel) Schubert of Ulm; Mary Lou (Bob) Tilleman of Chinook; Shirley (Garth) Tams of Covina; Larry Schubert of Havre; Ken (Evelyn) Schubert and Penny (Henry) Hofeldt, all of Chinook; and Debbie (Gordon) Moes of Big Sandy. Other survivors are: sisters-in-law Marge Matchett of Chinook and Lucille Frey of Montford, Wis., nine grandchildren and many stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to the Big Sandy Medical Center, American Lutheran Church, or Bear Paw Hospice. Arrangements are by Edwards Funeral Home of Chinook.
