LICE LANGEL obituary

RUDYARD - Alice Camille (Chvilicek) Langel, 68, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at her daughter's home in Phoenix, Ariz.

Vigil prayers will be 7 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church in Hingham. Funeral Mass will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Cremation

will follow per Alice's request. A graveside service and burial of ashes will be 11 a.m. next Monday at the Rudyard Cemetery.

Alice was born Feb. 17, 1936, at Hingham to John and Marion (Huestis) Chvilicek. Alice grew up on the family farm and received her early education at the Mariner country school north of town. She graduated from Rudyard High School in 1954.

Alice married Arnold F. "Bud" Langel on Feb. 1, 1955 at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. They moved to the Langel farm north of Rudyard where Alice worked as a farmwife, homemaker, and mother of six. Following Bud's untimely death in 1968, Alice and the children moved into Rudyard where she began working as a cook and waitress at the local bowling alley.

In 1972, Alice began studying nursing at Northern Montana College in Havre, where she earned her L.P.N. degree and graduated highest in her class. She worked several years at the Liberty County Hospital in Chester before returning to college in 1977. Alice received her R.N. degree from Northern in 1979, then continued her nursing duties in Chester. After she retired from nursing in 1998, Alice continued to teach the C.N.A. classes at the Chester hospital 2-3 times a year.

In November of 2003, Alice traveled to Phoenix, Ariz., to visit family and attend a Simon and Garfunkel concert. While there, she fell at her daughter Judy's home and ended up in the hospital for three weeks. Shortly thereafter she was diagnosed with lung cancer and she received the gamut of chemo and radiation treatment. Alice spent the better part of 6 months in and out of hospitals and skilled nursing facilities. On Dec. 29, she transferred to her daughter's home in Phoenix to be cared for by nurses from the Hospice of the Valley. Alice's eldest daughter, Marietta, had come in April to be with her and spent everyday at her bedside.

Alice was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Ransom Church in Hingham.

Her hobbies included gardening, bowling, reading, and cross-stitching. She was one of Garfield's biggest fans, as evidenced by her large collection of Garfield memorabilia. In her quiet time at home she enjoyed watching television; her favorite shows were "Jeopardy," "The Price is Right," "Wheel of Fortune," and "The Young & the Restless." Alice became an avid football fan after her oldest son played high school ball, and her favorite NFL team was the Denver Broncos. Alice enjoyed her many years of bowling. She served on many statewide committees, including Director of District II of the Montana Women's Bowling Association.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brothers, John, James, Leonard, Norbert and Gerald Chvilicek; and granddaughter, Jessica Langel.

Survivors include her sons, Eugene Langel of Las Vegas, Nev., Bill (Pam) Langel of Inverness, and Dennis (Debbie) Langel of Havre; daughters, Marietta Haaland of Federal Way, Wash., Judy (Mark Brady) Langel of Phoenix, Ariz., and Janet (Paul) Twedt of Federal Way, Wash.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and brothers, Lawrence (Carole) Chvilicek of Pendleton, Ore., and Robert Chvilicek of Chester; and numerous nephews and nieces.

Memorials will be given to the American Cancer Society or Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church.
