HOWARD MOON obituary

KALISPELL - Howard Jay Moon, 100, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2004, in Kalispell.

A Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Saint Judes Church, 440 Seventh Ave. N. in Kalispell.

Howard was born May 23, 1904, at Tyler, Minn., to Frederick O. Moon and Mary E. Moon. In 1909, Howard traveled the Great Northern Railway with his mother, brother and grandfather to join his father at their new home in the Flathead Valley. Howard attended grade school in Kalispell and graduated from Flathead County High School in 1922. He earned his degree in mechanical engineering at Montana State University in 1928 and his teaching diploma in 1932. He was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Tau Beta Phi. He attended summer sessions after graduation at University of Washington and at Oregon State University.

Howard taught in several one-room schools in some of Montana's more isolated mining and ranching areas during the first years of his career. He later taught at Havre Junior High School for three years at then at Havre High School for 28 years. He retired in 1968.

Howard was a member of st. Jude's Catholic Church in Havre and a life member of the Knights of Columbus, third and fourth degrees.

Howard married Irene Wengler in June of 1941. Irene also taught in the Havre public school system. During their years together, they traveled in Europe, the eastern United States, Hawaii, Canada and in the desert Southwest. Irene died in November 1992.

Howard was preceded in death by Irene; his parents, and a sister who died in infancy.

Survivors include six nieces, three nephews, numerous grandnieces and grandnephews, and numerous great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice, Saint Judes Church or the Knights of Columbus.
