Chester, Blue Sky/KG get wins

The first full month of high school football is now in the books. Across the Hi-Line, this past weekend was much better for some teams after some tough games two weeks ago.

The Chester Coyotes bounced back from their first loss of the season, while the Blue Sky/KG Eagles picked up an important win over Box Elder in Northern Six-Man action.

On Friday night in Chester, the host Coyotes were able to rebound from a loss at Belt last weekend with a 53-6 thrashing over the Heart Butte Warriors in Northern C action.

Chester scored 30 points in the first quarter to put the Warriors away before halftime. Patrick Wicks opened the route with a 58-yard touchdown run early in the first period. The Coyotes then scored again when quarterback Kevin May hooked up with Casey Buffington for an 11-yard touchdown pass.

Chester also scored eight points in the second quarter to grab a 38-0 lead at the half. The Coyotes then tacked on 15 more points in the third quarter.

Wicks scored three times, including returning a punt 45 yards for a score. May also threw a pair of TDs on the night and Buffington reached the endzone twice as well.

Meanwhile, in Big Sandy the host Pioneers lost a heartbreaking 42-38 decision to visiting Power-Dutton-Brady.

After the Titans built a 28-14 lead in the first quarter, the Pioneers came all the way back to take the lead twice in the second half. The second of those leads came when Lawrence Jappe scored from 32 yards out. Jappe's TD run gave the Pioneers a brief 38-36 lead. But Orrie Gondierro led the Titans' comeback. He put his team up for good when he scored from six-yards out with just minutes left in the game.

Jappe's rushed for 233 yards and three touchdowns. He scored on runs of 65, 56 and 32 yards. Justin Willis and Alex Thornton also scored rushing touchdowns in the Pioneer loss.

On Saturday afternoon, the Blue Sky/KG Eagles picked up an important 47-18 home win over new conference rival Box Elder.

The Eagles jumped out to a quick 16-0 lead behind a 45-yard TD run from Josh Strissel and a 23-yard scamper from Cody Donoven. The Eagles built an impressive 35-12 halftime lead, and the Bears were never able to get back into the contest in the second half.

Donoven scored four times for the Eagles on the day. He reached the endzone on runs of 8, 23, 47 and 15 yards. Jeremy Burns scored twice for the Bears on runs of 27 and three yards.

In Joplin, the host J-I Rams gave up 39 unanswered points in a 58-18 loss to defending Six-Man state champion Geraldine on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers opened the game scoring on runs of 20 and 15 yards en route to a 25-0 first quarter lead. The Rams finally got on the board when Riley Smith caught a 15-yard pass from Josh Beaudry. Smith also caught a 20-yard pass from Craig Miller in the fourth quarter, but the Rams could never get back into the contest.

In Lambert, the Rocky Boy Stars were blown out for the second straight weekend as the host Lions hammered the Stars 78-13.

The Lions scored 58 points in the first half and quarterback Nathan Diede threw six touchdown passes on the day.

The Stars first touchdown came on a six-yard run by Nate Rock in the second quarter. The Stars also scored when A.J. The Boy returned a blocked punt 79 yards for a touchdown in the second half.
