Phoebe Kathleen Alex, 89, died Friday, June 5, 2004, at a Havre Care Center of natural causes.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Fifth Avenue Christian Church with the Rev. Rowlie Hutton officiating. Burial will follow at the
Highland Cemetery. A fellowship luncheon will be held at the Vets Club immediately after the services at the graveside.
Phoebe was born on June 9, 1914, south of Hingham to Daniel and Nancy Emily (Mullin) Dolph. She was raised and educated in Hingham and graduated from Hingham High School in 1932. She attended Northern Montana College and graduated from there with a bachelor of arts degree in English and French.
Phoebe taught at various country schools in Hill County and finished her teaching career at Rudyard High School.
Phoebe met John Alex in Hingham, and they were married May 27, 1939, in Havre. They farmed north of Hingham, and later they purchased land south of Hingham, where they farmed and ranched. They also ran sheep and cattle for 30 years.
Phoebe was very active in her community. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America, the Home Demonstration Club of Hingham, and the Elks.
Phoebe enjoyed bowling, golfing and playing bridge.
Phoebe was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Russell; and husband, John N. Alex in 2001.
Survivors include her sons, J.R. (Mavis) Alex of Havre, Nick (Dani) Alex of Hingham, Gene Alex of Hingham; brothers, Elbert Dolph and Howard Dolph, both of Havre; sister, Jackie Macy of Polson; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorials in Phoebe's honor may be made to The First Responders of Hingham.
Services and arrangements are under the direction of Holland and Bonine Funeral Home.
