MARGARET GOLBERG obituary

RUDYARD - Margaret Frances (Hiler) Golberg, 85, died Sunday, June 6, 2004, of natural causes at a Havre rest home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rudyard. Burial will follow at the Rudyard Cemetery.

Margaret was born at Minneapolis, Minn., on June 21, 1918, to Floyd and Marie (Olson) Hiler. She came to Montana as a child and grew up in the Havre community. Margaret received her education in Havre and graduated from Havre High School in 1936. She continued her schooling at Spokane, Wash., and earned a degree from Kinman Business School.

Margaret returned to Montana and began working at the F.A. Buttrey Store in Havre.

She met her husband-to-be, Arnold C. Golberg, and they were married in Havre on June 2, 1940. They made their home at Vancouver, Wash., where Arnold worked in the shipyards during World War II. Margaret stayed busy as a homemaker and mother to their only child.

Following the war, the Golbergs returned to Montana and began farming north of Rudyard. Margaret accepted a position as clerk of the Rudyard School system, a job she held for more than 30 years. Her husband, Arnold, died in a vehicular accident in 1975. Margaret continued to live in Rudyard. She worked at the school until her retirement in 1988.

In February of 2003, Margaret suffered a broken hip. She transferred to the Northern Montana Care Center in Havre for extended care.

Margaret was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1978 and received appropriate treatment. She was proud to have been a cancer survivor for the past 25 years.

Margaret was baptized as an infant at Minneapolis in 1918. She received her confirmation as an adult at Our Savior's Lutheran Church at Rudyard in 1940. She had been an active member of the church since, serving on the church council and the ladies' aide organizations. Margaret had also been active in the Eastern Star, Rainbow Girls, and Rudyard Historical Society.

Margaret and Arnold enjoyed brook fishing and golfing together. Margaret's personal interests included gardening, crocheting, quilting, bowling and scrapbooking. She enjoyed baking, especially Norwegian foods like lefse, breads, raisin bars, etc. Of interest was the fact that she learned to swim when she was in her 70s with special instructions by her granddaughter, Marcia.

Last, but not least, Margaret was a big sports fan and supporter of all school activities. She loved every single student during her tenure as clerk of the school.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Survivors include her daughter, Sandra (Jerry) Copenhaver of Rudyard; grandchildren, Marcia (Dale) Welliever of Billings and Mark (Tammy) Copenhaver of Helena; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
