Havre High girls capture Arm Invitational title

If there was any doubt about just how far the Havre High girls track has come this season, Saturday afternoon in Whitefish erased those doubts.

The Blue Pony girls team finished first in the very competitive Arm Invitational hosted by the Whitefish Bulldogs on a warm, sunny Saturday.

Havre ran away with the team title with 105 points. The Ponies easily outdistanced second-place Libby, which finished with 87 points. Bigfork was third with 87 points and the host Bulldogs were fourth with 73 points.

"This was a really good meet for our girls," said HHS head coach Mark West. "We faced great competition, and all of our girls performed really well, and we scored a lot of points. Things really came together for us."

Havre High got a ton of points in almost every event. In the sprints, Rylee O'Connell and Mandi Nystrom both had strong showings among Class A's best sprinters, including Whitefish standout Courtney Ferda.

O'Connell pushed Ferda in the 100 meters, coming in second with a blazing time of 12.86. Meanwhile, Nystrom followed O'Connell's lead by placing fourth in the 200 meters and then coming back to capture the 400-meter crown with a time of 1:00.35. Kelsey Smith also paced the Ponies with a sixth-place finish in 100 meters and a fifth-place finish in the pole vault.

"Rylee and Mandi Nystrom both ran exceptionally well," West said. "It is a big accomplishment for Mandi to go out and win the 400 against some great runners like she did."

Havre's relay teams have been consistent all season and they didn't disappoint on Saturday. The team of Alicia Overcast, Alexa Lipp, Kelsey West and Nystrom captured the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 4:19.57, and the Ponies also finished second in the 400-meter relay. Kelsey Smith, Carmen Neuens, Kelsey West and O'Connell were part of that team.

Overcast's and Neuens' big day didn't end with the relay races. Overcast set a meet record on her way to capturing the 800-meter championship. She finished the race with a time of 2:21.23

Meanwhile, Neuens finished second in both the high jump and the triple jump to add to her team's point total. Havre also got a big lift in the field events. Sophomore Lena Suek had her most consistent day as a Blue Pony. Suek finished second in both the discus and javelin and placed fifth in the shotput.

"This weekend was big for our confidence," West said. "We knew that we had a pretty good team, but to win this meet against all of these teams really puts us in a good position for later in the year."

The Blue Pony boys did not fare as well as their teammates on Saturday. Havre finished ninth, scoring just 26 points overall. The defending Class A champion Whitefish Bulldogs destroyed the field by scoring 156 points. Libby was a not-so-close second with 57 team points.

"The boys struggled a little on Saturday," West said. "We had some good individual performances like Kasey Barsotti in the 3,200, but we have a lot of young kids that are competing hard and trying to get better as the season goes along."

Barsotti was Havre's only individual champion on the day. He captured the 3,200-meter race with a time of 10:06. Patch Wirtzberger also tried to help Havre's cause by finishing third in the 300-meter hurdles. Junior Scott Robinson placed fourth in the 400 meters as well as coming in fifth in the javelin.

"I was really happy with the day overall," West said. "It was a very tough road trip and both the boys and girls teams got out there and competed really hard, and that is what we want to see right now."

Some of the Blue Pony boys and girls will head to Glasgow on Tuesday for the Top Ten meet. The entire HHS team will be back in action on Saturday when they attend the Chinook Invitational at the HMS track in Havre.
