HHS track teams solid at strong meets

To say that the Havre High track teams stepped up a level in competition this past weekend would be an understatement - like saying weather during track season can be a little unpredictable. Both the Havre High girls and boys teams attended separate Class AA meets in Butte and Great Falls on Saturday.

For some of the young Ponies, the day was an eye-opening experience, and for others it was a chance to see how they fared against the best track and field athletes that Montana has to offer.

"Our young kids were very nervous at both meets, and I don't think some of them performed as well as they could have," said HHS head coach Mark West. "But our veteran kids are used to these meets now, and we had some really nice performances."

The Blue Pony girls team continued to make significant strides toward becoming a Class A power at the Optimist Invitational in Great Falls on Saturday. Havre scored 24 points to finish ninth in the otherwise Class AA-only meet.

Senior Kelsey Smith led the Ponies by finishing seventh in the 200 meters and seventh in the pole vault. Fellow sprinter Rylee O'Connell also finished eighth in the 200. Senior Alicia Overcast ran an outstanding 59.65 in the 400 meters to finish second. That race was one of the highlights of the day, according to West.

"Our sprinters all ran really well today," West said. "Kelsey ran really well and Alicia's time in the 400 was outstanding. She ran a great race."

Havre's relay teams also earned high praise from West on Saturday. The team of Overcast, Smith, O'Connell and Kelsey West finished fifth in a very tough 400-meter relay. The Ponies placed seventh in the 1,600-meter relay with the team of Mandi Nystrom, Kim Jestrab, and Kelsey and Cammie West.

"Our relay teams had a really nice day," West said. "Those were both really competitive races, so it was big for our kids to be able to step up and place in those two races."

Lena Suek also continued to improve for the Havre team, as she earned a solid third-place showing in the discus. Suek's final throw was 112-10.

"We had a lot of personal best times, and that is what we want to see at a meet of this caliber," West said. "Everybody lowered their times under really competitive conditions, and that definitely means we are getting better every week."

The HHS boys team also had some good individual moments at the Dahlberg Invitational in Butte. But as a team, the Ponies scored just 13 team points to finish last.

Junior Scott Robinson led the way for Havre, placing in two events. Robinson finished third in the 800 meters and finished sixth in the javelin.

"Scott did very well this weekend against some great athletes," West said. "He is getting better every time he goes out there."

After Robinson, the Ponies only got points from two other competitors. Kasey Barsotti finished a very impressive fourth in the 3,200 and Sam Simpson finished fifth in the 400 meters.

"Our boys team is really young and inexperienced and it kind of showed this weekend," West said. "But we are working to build toward the end of the season. The good thing is that we have a lot of good meets left to get the boys team stronger, and hopefully we can find some depth."

Havre will be back in action on Tuesday when it hosts the Great Falls High Bison in dual action at the Havre Middle School Track. On Saturday, the Ponies will travel to Whitefish.
