Geraldine girls dominate Rocky Boy Invite

The Havre Middle School track is like a home away from home for the Geraldine girls track team. Maybe it's because every time the Tiger girls step on it, they win.

Geraldine racked up a ridiculous 150 points, won seven individual titles and pretty much dominated the girls portion of the Rocky Boy Invitational track meet on Wednesday.

Senior Toni Qunell once again showed why she is considered one of the top performers in the state, winning the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes along with 100- and 300-meter hurdles, all in decisive fashion. Qunell's teammate, Rachel Clark, captured the long and triple jumps while finishing second to Qunell in the 100, 200 and 400.

The Chester girls put up a strong showing, scoring 106 team points and winning four events. Jillien Johnson had a solid day, winning the 1,600 with a time of 5:48.39, edging Blue Sky/J-I's Kile Patrick. Johnson easily won the 3,200 with a time of 13:26.60 and also finished second in the pole vault.

Chester's relay team of Chelsea Stokes, Mikinzie Fraser and Brittany and Leisha Kolstad captured both the 400 and 1,600 relay.

Blue Sky/J-I finished third with 69 points, as Patrick took home the 800 title and Kaila Warren placed in three events for the Eagles.

The boys team team race was much closer as Chester took home the team title with 103 points, edging KG, which scored 98.

The Coyotes got another strong performance from Patrick Walstad, who cruised to a pair of wins in the distance events. Walstad, the defending state champ in the 800, posted a solid time of 2:02.15 on Wednesday, beating his nearest competitor by almost seven seconds. He also picked up an easy win in the 1,600 with a time of 4:49.57. Although the Coyotes failed to win another event, their depth carried them to the title, as Travis and Isaac VanDyke and Zach Ramberg all placed in multiple events.

KG got the bulk of its points from the trio of Luke Antonich, Cody Donoven and Richie Melby. Antonich, as usual, won the 110 hurdles and also captured the high jump. Donoven won the javelin and 300 hurdles, while Melby placed second in the 200 and 400 and also placed in the long jump and high jump.

The KouGars also got solid performances in the weights as Jerrod Gomke and Forest LeTang finished second and fourth in the shot put.

Big Sandy's Mason Ophus, who has the top throw in Montana in the discus, won the event easily on Wednesday with a toss of 162-06 - almost 30 feet better the second-place finisher. Craig Miller of Blue Sky/J-I won the shot put with a toss of 45-09 which edged Gomke by an inch.
