ROSE BROCKIE obituary

FORT BELKNAP AGENCY - Rose L. Brockie, 89, died Tuesday, April 13, 2004, at a Havre care center from complications of a heart attack and diabetes. She had been ill since Christmas.

A funeral Mass will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Catholic Church in Hays with burial following at the Mission Cemetery. A rosary and wake will be

held at 7 p.m. Friday in the Red Whip Center at Fort Belknap Agency.

Rose was born on Oct. 2, 1914, in Dunseith, N.D. She was raised at Graham's Island, Fort Totten, N.D., and came to Montana at a young age due to health reasons.

She married Old Joe Assiniboine at Fort Belknap and he died while she was still young. Rose married Victor Brockie and this union lasted until his death in 1963.

Known as "Dakota Rose" to her close friends, Rose kept her home open to a lot of Fort Belknap's residents who needed a helping hand and a place to stay. She grew quite fond of quite a few of these people. They affectionately called her "grandma" and she was not hesitant in scolding them when needed.

Rose is survived by sons, Eugene and Leonard Brockie, both of Fort Belknap Agency; daughter, Eleanor Brown of Fort Belknap Agency; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren at New Mexico's Navaho Reservations, Montana's Flathead, Rock Boy's, Fort Belknap reservations, and North Dakota's Fort Totten and Turtle Mountain reservations.

Rose was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; four sons, Peter, Lawrence, Emmett and Joe Assiniboine; and one stepson, Dallas Walker.
