Chinook girls solid in dual action

The Chinook High School Tennis put up a solid performance on Monday, winning 18 of 26 matches against the Havre High varsity and junior varsity tennis teams Monday afternoon in dual action at the Bill Vaughey Memorial Tennis Courts.

The Beeters were led by Monica Thackeray and Gen Burkhartsmeyer, who finished with three wins in singles action apiece on the day. Thackeray defeated Havre's No. 3 singles player, Karissa Olson, 8-4, while Burkhartsmeyer didn't lose a single game in her wins on the day.

Brianna Harbolt, Dawn Kellam, Kayla Erskine, Melanie Overcast, Lacey Sargent and Neele Leske also picked up wins for Chinook in the singles.

Havre's No. 2 singles player Megan Rice picked up a pair of wins over Leske and Liz Craig. Olson also had a win over Craig while Jocelyn Chagnon scored the Ponies only other singles' win, defeating Tollefson 8-5. Havre's No.1 singles player Amy McLain did not compete.

"It was a great day weatherwise for tennis" said HHS head coach George Ferguson. "Chinook has very good players, judging from what I saw today they should do very well this year in the Northern B-C division."

The Ponies had a better showing in doubles action. Havre's No.1 team of Keelie Solomon and Steph Flatau won both of its matches in convincing fashion, defeating Overcast and Sargent 8-4 and Craig and Leske 8-3. Kristi Hollingshead teamed with Kari Gorder and Jocelyn Chagnon to win two matches. The Beeters still scored four doubles wins with Thackeray and Tollefson, Overcast and Sargent and Erskine and Kellam all winning doubles matches.

"This was the first matches for a lot of girls on our JV team and they are very young as far as tennis is

concerned," Ferguson said. It was a good learning experience for them."

Havre and Chinook will see each other again in Saturday's Havre Invitational.
