Chester girls' season comes to end

The Chester Coyotes girls basketball season came to an abrupt end on Friday afternoon at the Class C girls state tournament at the Belgrade Special Events Center.

The Coyotes dropped their opening- round game Thursday to defending state champion Charlo, and were then eliminated from the tournament by upstart Scobey in Friday loser-out action.

In the opening round Chester succumbed to a big second half by Charlo, as it fell 42-29. The two teams played a dead-even first half, however. They played to a 6-6 tie after one period and the game was tied at 13-13 at halftime.

But the Vikings broke open the game by going on a 12-6 run in the third quarter to grab a 25-19 lead. Charlo then tacked on 17 more points in the fourth period to put the game out of reach.

Mary DeVries led Chester in the scoring column with nine points, and Keyla Wendland chipped in with eight. The Vikings were paced by Ma'rya Hungerford and Jessica Bucholz, who scored 10 points each.

Following the loss to Charlo, Chester slipped into loser-out action on Friday afternoon where it was bounced from the tournament by Scobey, 58-43.

The Spartans scored 13 points in each of the first two quarters to build a 26-18 lead at the half. They then kept Chester from mounting any type of comeback in the second half to win by a 15-point margin.

Chester got 30 of its 42 points from the trio of DeVries, Wendland and Shawnee Norick. They scored 10 points apiece. The Spartans were led in the win by Lindsey Gunderson's game-high 15 points. Sister Laura Gunderson chipped in with 12 points.

Chester finished its season with a 21-6 overall record. The Class C state championship was captured by Harlowtown. Scobey finished third.
