Pioneers survive scare to stay undefeated; KG knocks off Chester

It was a somewhat quiet week across the Hi-Line in boys high school basketball. Poor weather conditions wreaked havoc with travel and teams saw limited action in District 2B, 9C and 10C play.

The basketball week actually got started early as the Box Elder Bears crushed Belt 91-52 on Jan. 26 in Box Elder.

Neal Rosette led four Bears in double figures with 22 points. Aaron Henry added 21, Jayson Hawk came off the bench to score 12 points and Tim Rosette chipped in with 11 in the win.

Last Tuesday night, the KG KouGars picked up a come-from-behind road win over the Chester Coyotes, 65-58.

The Coyotes led 31-27 at halftime and held a two-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. But the KouGars pulled ahead of the Coyotes in the fourth quarter via a 24-11 run to grab a critical win over their 10C rival.

Richie Melby and Luke Antonich led the way for the KouGars with 15 points a piece while Drew Kapperud chipped in with 13 points. Travis VanDyke paced Chester in the loss with a game-high 20 points. John Tranberg added 13 points in the losing effort.

On a rare Wednesday night game, Hays-Lodge Pole came up just short against Dodson 66-63 in Dodson. The T-Birds got down early in the game and spent the rest of the contest fighting back before coming up just short.

Lance Brockie scored 15 points and Steven Shambo added 14, while Michael Gray chipped in with 11 in the loss for Hays.

On Friday night in District 2B play, the third-ranked Glasgow Scotties ripped the Chinook Sugarbeeters 75-38. Glasgow raced out to a 21-4 first quarter lead and never looked back in the easy victory.

Glen Bratz led four Scotties in double-figures with 19 points and Randy Elletson added 17. Chinook got 12 points from Adam Hayes.

In District 9C action Friday night, the top-ranked Big Sandy Pioneers remained perfect on the season with a 79-54 trouncing of Rocky Boy. The Stars tried to make things close in the second half, but they could not overcome a 47-21 halftime Big Sandy lead.

Gage Brumwell led all scorers with 26 points for Big Sandy. Jay Jamieson and Mason Ophus added 16 and 13 points, respectively. Rocky Boy got 10 points each from the trio of A.J. The Boy, Eric Watson and Bill Watson.

Friday night also saw the Box Elder Bears blow out the Blue Sky Eagles, 83-52. The Bears outscored Blue Sky 42-26 in the first half and tacked on another 27 points in the fourth quarter.

Aaron Henry led the Bears with a game-high 20 points and Neal Rosette chipped in with 14. In all, 10 Box Elder players reached the scoring column. Jeremiah Moog paced Blue Sky with 18 points.

On Saturday, the Harlem Wildcats returned to action and defeated District 9C foe Rocky Boy, 77-53. The Wildcats raced out to a 25-12 first quarter lead, but the Stars came back to pull within six points at halftime, 36-30. The Wildcats responded with a 26-13 run in the fourth quarter to put the contest out of reach.

Harlem got a game-high 25 points from Jim Kennedy. Ben Carrywater also scored 13 points in the win. Eric Watson paced the Stars with 12 points.

In District 9C action, the KG KouGars continued their winning ways, picking up a close 52-48 decision over Turner. The Tornadoes actually held a 28-24 lead at intermission and led 39-36 through three periods. But the KouGars went on a 16-9 run in the final quarter to push themselves to the close win.

KG got 17 points from Cody Donoven and 15 from Dan Kloppenburg. Brandon Simons and Clancy Kegel scored 16 points apiece for Turner.

In District 10C action the J-I Rams pulled off a one-point 66-65 victory over the Valier Panthers. J-I outscored Valier 24-23 in a furious third quarter to lead 53-47. The Panthers rallied late but came up short in the closing seconds.

J-I was led by Craig Miller with 20 points. Matt Tempel and Zach Ramberg added 14 points each in the win.

Big Sandy remained undefeated, surviving a 65-56 scare from Hays-Lodge Pole on Saturday night in Hays. The Pioneers clung to a 43-40 lead going into the fourth quarter, but outscored the T-Birds 22-16 at the end to pull away.
