High school girls basketball action returned to the Hi-Line after a two-week Christmas Break. Although temperatures hovered well below zero for most of the weekend, the action in the gym was heated.
The hottest team of the weekend would have to be the Turner Tornadoes, who picked up a pair of District 9C wins. Friday night, Turner knocked off Hays-Lodge Pole 51-39 in Turner. The Tornadoes broke open a 37-35 score at the end of the third quarter with a 16-2 burst in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Cheryl Cowan led all scorers with 25 points and Ashley Van Voast chipped in with 13 to lead the Tornadoes. The T-Birds got 17 points from Colette Hawley in the losing effort.
Turner completed the weekend sweep with a 54-36 upset of the KG KouGars in Gildford. Turner used a 19-6 second quarter to break open a close game. Cowan once again led the Tornadoes with 18 points, while Van Voast chipped in with 15 points. KG was led by Casie Toner, who scored 15 points, including three three-pointers. Cady Arifin chipped in with 10 points for the KouGars. Turner improved to 3-5 overall while KG fell to 4-4 on the season.
The Chester Coyotes also picked up a pair of wins on the weekend. On Friday night, the Coyotes defeated KG 67-41 in Gildford behind 21 points from Keyla Wendland and 14 points from Shawnee Norick. Chester outscored KG 35-14 in the second half. KG got 19 points from Cady Arifin in the losing effort.
Chester picked up its second win of the weekend, defeating District 9C foe Blue Sky 48-40. Chester outscored Blue Sky 17-13 in the fourth quarter to secure the win. Mary DeVries led all scorers with 18 points for Chester. Holly Haas led Blue Sky with 10 points.
Blue Sky still maintained its place atop the 9C standings with a 70-29 win over Box Elder in Rudyard. The Eagles rolled to a 20-7 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.
Kaila Warren and Lindsay Anderson scored 21 points each while Haas and Kile Patrick 14 and 10 points, respectively for Blue Sky. Box Elder was led by Shaneen Raining Bird with 10 points. Blue Sky is now 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the 9C.
The Rocky Boy Morning Stars moved into second place in the 9C standings with a 73-60 win over the Big Sandy Pioneers in Rocky Boy. Trailing 38-37 at halftime, the Stars outscored Big Sandy 36-22 in the second half en route to the win.
Leiloni Belcourt led five Rocky Boy players in double figures with 22 points. Marty Rae Stiffarm scored 17 points, Deidra Sunchild added 12 while Tori Belcourt and Chelsey St. Pierre added 11 points each in the win. Big Sandy got 21 points from Ashley Goodian and 14 from Naomi Williams in the loss.
Big Sandy bounced back from the loss with a 49-48 win over Hays-Lodge Pole Saturday in Big Sandy. The Pioneers rallied from a 33-29 deficit in the fourth quarter, outscoring Hays 20-15 to pick up the win.
Goodian scored a game-high 25 points for Big Sandy. Hawley led the T-Birds with 17 points while Sheena Shambo and Vanessa Webb added 11 in the loss.
Rocky Boy suffered a 57-40 non-conference loss to Class B Harlem on Saturday night in Harlem. The Wildcats outscored Rocky Boy 21-4 in the second quarter to pull away.
Olivia Main scored a game-high 24 points to lead Harlem. Rocky Boy got 10 points from Chelsey St. Pierre in the loss.
District 2B play wasn't quite as kind to Harlem on Friday night. The Wildcats fell to Plentywood 61-38 in a conference matchup. Kristen Steiner scored a game-high 20 points for Plentywood. Main was the only player in double figures for Harlem with 11 points.
Baskets were few and far between for the Chinook Sugarbeeters on Friday night. The Beeters managed just 27 points in a 32-27 loss to 2B rival Glasgow. Neither team could provide much offense, but the Scotties outscored Chinook 10-5 in the third quarter to build a slim lead.
Whitney Lybeck led all scorers with nine points for the Beeters.
In District 10C action, the J-I Rams were edged by the Valier Panthers 49-40. Valier outscored J-I 28-17 in the second and third quarters to pull away for good.
J-I got 15 points from Megan Herdina and 12 from Hannah Pimley in the losing effort.
In Monday basketball action, the Belt Huskies defeated Box Elder 55-23 in Belt. The Huskies used a 22-4 first-quarter outburst to set the tone early and never looked back.Shaneen Raining Bird and Ashley Parisian scored six points each to lead the Bears.
