ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Helen Carol Smith, 59, formerly of Rudyard, died on Saturday, June 7, 2003, at an Anchorage medical center from colon cancer.
A small service for friends and family was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel in Anchorage on Thursday afternoon. Plans for a second memorial service in
Whitefish on June 24 are pending.
Carol was born in Whitefish on March 18, 1944, to Maxine Lodinoff.
She married James Smith in 1963 right after graduating from high school. Following four years of college in Superior, Wis., she and Jim shared thirty-two years serving education in Montana and Alaska. The family spent 21 of those years in Rudyard, where Carol was known for her exceptional cooking skills, hospitality, and as a great friend. She was an excellent bowler and would knit a blanket for every newborn close to her. Carol always opened her arms and her home to friends in need, doing her best unselfishly to serve the needs of those around her.
They moved to Galena, Alaska, in the summer of 1999, where she worked for the Galena City School District in the library.
Knitting, cooking and spending time with her family were her favorite things to do.
She was preceded in death by her natural father, Bill Robertson, and sisters, Carlene and Linda.
She is survived by her husband, Jim of Galena; son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Patti of Galena; daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Ameer of Anchorage; parents, Maxine and Alex Lodinoff of Whitefish; brothers, Bubby of Whitefish, Bernie Robertson of Rainier, Wash., Bob Robertson of Havre; sisters, Penni Robertson of Havre, Debbie of Billings; sister-in-law, Shirley Devoe of Nova Scotia; and her father- and mother-in-law, Marjorie and Lloyd Brownell of San Francisco; a granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were made with Evergreen Memorial Chapel of Anchorage.
