Tribal primary June 6

ROCKY BOY Several elected positions with the Chippewa Cree Tribe of Rocky Boy's Reservation are up for grabs during the primary and general elections this year.

The process for electing a new tribal chairman to replace Chairman Bert Corcoran gets under way with the primary tribal elections on June 6. Corcoran has decided to retire and is not seeking re-election.

The election, held in conjunction with the national, state and local primaries, will be in the Stone Child College gym. The polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. the first Tuesday in June.

Four candidates are vying for slots in the Nov. 7 general election for chairmanship of Rocky Boy's Business Committee (tribal council). The four candidates for Corcoran's position are Russell Houle, Sr., Alvin John Windy Boy, Sr., Peter Demontiney, Sr., and Daryl "Buck" Wright I. The top two vote getters advance to the November election.

There are 40 candidates vying for four seats on the Business Committee. The top eight vote getters will advance to the November general election ballot.

The candidates for Business Committee are: Tim Rosette, Sr., Roger St. Pierre, Enos R. Johnson, Sr., Pete T. LaMere, Tony Belcourt, Earl Archie Arkinson, Charles Gopher, Lydia M. Sutherland, Suzanne "Billy" Stump, Mario Patacsil, Sr., Raymond "Jake" Parker, Jr., Louis Luke Parisian, Teddy Russette III, Melvin Morsette, Jr., Harvey B. Friede, Sr., Joe Demontiney, Jr., Kenneth C. Writing Bird, John (Sonny) Roasting Stick, Jr., Rosemary (Bunty) Lafromboise, Steve Morsette, Sr., Leon (Blackie) Sutherland, James Pechum Wells, James "Jimmy" LaMere, George Henderson, Gordon J. Whitford, Tina Chief Stick, Michael E. LaMere, Junior, Joe Big Knife, Warren Paul Small, Sr., Pete "Babz" Demontiney, Jr., Jonathan J. Eagleman, Walter Moose Denny, Judi Houle, Videl Stump, Sr., Candice Saddler Carter, Pete "Bum" Demontiney, Arnold Four Souls, Donovan Stump, Debbie "Normandy" St. Pierre, Russell Standing Rock.

Four candidates have thrown their hats into the ring for the chief tribal judge position. Only two will advance to the November ballot. The chief judge candidates are: Judy LaMere, Gilbert Belgarde, Harriet Standing Rock, Arthur "Ozzie" Windy Boy.

Seven candidates will appear on the ballot for the two associate judge positions up for election. The four receiving the most votes in the primary will appear on the November ballot. The associate judge candidates are: Selina K. Johnson, Mike Parker, Sr., Ken Gardipee, Lily Corcoran, Jeanne Big Knife Hobbs, Robert Robbie Alexander, Crystal L. Denny.

In order to vote in the tribal primary election, a person must be a duly enrolled member of the Chippewa Cree Tribe of Rocky Boy's Reservation, be 18 years old or older on election day, and provide proof of his or her enrollment by providing a tribal ID card at the polling place. No other source of identification or proof of enrollment will be accepted other than a Chippewa Cree Tribal ID card.
