U.S. Postal workers Stamp Ount Hunger

U.S. Postal carriers in Havre had one of the best responses ever this year to their annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

On Saturday, May 8, letter carriers collected 4,603 pounds of food donations from homes and businesses along their routes. People were asked to leave nonperishable foods out in the open near their mailboxes. People who didnt have a convenient place to leave their contributions were able to deliver the items to the post office throughout the day.

The donations included 1,082 pounds of dry foods and 3,521 pounds of canned foods. They even collected $10 from one of their patrons.

The event was sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers, with the support of the Expedited and Package Services division of the U.S. Postal Service. Donations were earmarked for Havre Giveaway House and the HRDC Domestic Abuse program.

We did really good, said local NALC president Mark Reid. Women from the domestic abuse program and men from the Giveaway House helped, as did the letter carriers, their wives and husbands and children, the post master and supervisor.

Reid named four kids he said were very helpful this year: Keiffer Nordgulen, Chad and Tiffany Ranes, and Tanner Abdallah.

This years take was up about 10 percent over last years.

It was one of the best years, Reid said. We beat last years by about 400 or 500 pounds.

Letter carriers brought in about 4,200 pounds last year.

Reid said Havre-area postal carriers were pleased with the response and grateful to everyone who helped make the food drive a success.
