    MATTHEW BROWN Associated Press|Updated Jul 1, 2013

COLSTRIP (AP) — After several years of taking a beating from the poor economy, new pollution rules and a flood of cheap natural gas, the coal industry was on the rebound this year as mining projects moved forward in the Western U.S. and demand for the fuel began to rise, especially in Asia. But almost overnight, coal is back on the defensive, scrambling to stave off a dark future amid President Barack Obama's renewed push to rein in climate change. The proposal, with its emphasis on cuts in carbon dioxide emissions from n...

  • Bullock on climate change plans: Wait for details

Matt Gouras and Matt Volz The Associated Press|Updated Jul 1, 2013

HELENA (AP) — President Barack Obama's goal of limiting carbon-dioxide emissions has put Democratic leaders in energy-producing states such as Montana in a bind, caught between bellicose Republican statements of a "war on coal" and emboldened environmentalists who are calling for swift action. That has forced leaders such as Gov. Steve Bullock into something of a hedge, telling the public to wait for the details of Obama's plan while assuring them that energy production will remain a major economic driver and a source of e...

  • New laws kick in around US; here are Montana changes

    Updated Jun 30, 2013

HELENA (AP) — This part of summer is a time for patriotism. It's also the time new state laws go into effect across the nation. Fiscal years begin July 1 on most financial calendars, and a slew of state government spending regulations kick in each year on that date. Policy laws also hit the books in a wave, though states often mark their independence by enacting such legislation on their own time. Among the laws set to take effect this year around the U.S. are new abortion limits, gun laws and technology rules. And one s...

  • Medicaid expansion advocates form ballot committee

    MATT GOURAS Associated Press|Updated Jun 26, 2013

Many Republicans opposed to implementation of the federal health care law argue the state could eventually be on the hook for the expansion. On Wednesday, a coalition of health and c...

The decision did not alter Montana's constitutional definition of marriage as being between a man and a woman or directly affect any of the state's l...

  • A grizzly rebound? No really, study says

    Matthew Brown - Associated Press|Updated Jun 25, 2013

BILLINGS — Flaws in how the government measures Yellowstone's grizzly bear population raise questions about whether the animals have recovered sufficiently to merit lifting federal protections, according to a new study. The study concludes that a major reason more bears have been counted in recent years is that more time is now spent counting bears. The authors argue that the region's bruin population could in fact be in decline, even as officials consider revoking the g...
