This may only be my second local golf report of 2024, but it's one I've been thinking about for quite some time. And it's with a heavy heart I write this few words. However, I feel beyond compelled to do so. This column is dedicated to Dave Greenwood. We lost Dave this past winter. And for me, Dave's passing stirred many emotions and many memories, as I'm sure it did for many of you. Many of you will remember Dave for his long-standing association with Northern Montana...
It was an impressive road trip for the Havre High track and field teams. Last Thursday, the Blue Ponies nearly swept the Fergus Invitational in Lewistown. The Havre girls won the meet, while the Blue Pony boys came in second. Individually, the Ponies got great performances all the way around. On the girls side, Kaydance Reiter won the 100 and 200 meter-dashes. Reiter ran a 12.77, which was 0.7 seconds off her record-pace that she set back in 2022. After getting a...
The weather refused to cooperate for the Havre High tennis teams this past weekend, but the Blue Ponies still got some tennis in. The Ponies, of head coach Jeff Miller, were slated to host Glendive, East Helena, Conrad and Cut Bank in the two-day Havre Invitational last weekend, but weather wiped out all of Saturday. So instead, the Ponies took on East Helena in a double-dual Friday. In the official varsity dual, the Havre boys beat the Vigilantes 4-3, while East Helena won...
They didn't get to make their home debut Saturday, but the Havre High softball team was still able to keep rolling. Last Thursday, the Ponies traveled to Lewistown for a rivalry game with the Fergus Golden Eagles. And even on the Eagles' turf, they were no match for the Ponies, of head coach Tony Vigliotti, as Havre rolled to a 14-3 Eastern A win. On the mound, Elle Verploegen was spectaculair again, allowing just three runs on seven hits, while striking out five Eagles for...
Off to a hot start, the Havre High fastpitch softball team is wishing it would stay hot outside. That's because, weather permitting, the Blue Ponies have a chance to keep a good thing going this weekend. The Ponies are slated to make their home debut this Saturday against Miles City, but the forecast isn't looking great for that. But first, Havre is set to travel to Lewistown today to battle arch rival Fergus on a conference matchup. Head coach Tony Vigliotti's Blue Ponies...

They only get one chance, so the Havre High tennis teams are hoping the weather report is wrong. Despite the bad weather forecast, Havre is set to host the 2024 Havre Invitational Tennis Tournament Friday and Saturday at the Bill Vaughey Memorial Tennis Courts and the courts at Montana State University-Northern. The Blue Ponies, led by second-year head coach Jeff Miller, are coming off their season-opening meet in Cut Bank two weeks ago, where seniors Carter Spangler, Reid...
The Havre High track teams will be part of what should be a very big weekend for track and field in the coverage area. Today, the Blue Ponies, of head coach Kari Filius, are in Lewistown for the Fergus Invitational, which is part of a two-meet week for the Blue Ponies. Havre made its season debut last week in Frenchtown, which was an impromptu trip for the Ponies after their first two meets got canceled. And HHS looked strong as the Pony girls were in second, led by Kaydence...
She's been working towards this goal for a long time. And while her final season of girls fastpitch softball in high school is just getting started, Havre Blue Pony Elle Verploegen now knows exactly what she'll be doing with her collegiate career. Last week, Verploegen, a senior at HHS, signed to play softball at the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota. Verploegen is a four-year varsity player for the Blue Ponies, of head coach Tony Vigliotti. She's been the starting...
Last week, the Havre High track teams got a shot at competing for the first time this spring. After a couple of cancellations, Havre made the long trek to an invitational meet in Frenchtown last Thursday. The Havre girls were led by star sprinter Kaydence Reoter, who win the 100 and 200 meters. Macy Brandon was stellar as well, finishing second in the 200 and width in the 100. The Havre girls also won the 4x100 relay. The team was made up of Reiter, Brandon, Macee May, and Kya...
I know, bad weather is returning to Havre. Even though it's been a year since we moved away, trust me, I look at Havre's weather every single day. So I know, that while April is here, winter isn't letting go just yet. Still, because we've now turned to April, it's time to bring back my local golf report. As you all know, I'm playing golf in Denver now, but, I still want to work diligently to bring you your local golf report every week between now and Halloween. And there's a...
Another year of high school girls basketball has come and gone, and it was another exciting year of hoops on the Hi-Line. From the dominant Havre High girls, to Chinook's run to Class B and a resurgent Big Sandy squad, the Hi-Line was well represented when it comes to girls high school basketball. And the 2024 All Hi-Line Girls Team reflects that. This year's team is composed of six repeats, as well as newcomers and players from across all three classes. Amaya Jarvis, Havre A...
A staple of springtime in Havre is the MSU-Northern PRCA Extreme Bares and Broncs Challenge. And it returns to the Bigger Better Barn this weekend. MSU-Northern head coach Doug Kallenberger is appreciative of the funds that are raised from the rodeo each year, which goes to help the MSU-N Rodeo Team. And the Lights and Skylights are about to kick off their 2024 spring season. Northern has three Big Sky Region rodeos on the slate this spring, starting with the Montana State...
The Havre High softball team was a week late in getting their season started. But when the Blue Ponies did, they started off in style. Head coach Tony Vigliotti's team opened the 2024 campaign with a 13-0 win at Miles City on Thursday afternoon. Havre dominated the game from start to finish on its way to a 1-0 record. The Blue Ponies will now have Easter weekend off. Next up for the Ponies is a trip to Lewistown April 5, followed by a rematch with Miles City April 6 in...
There really is nothing like the end of winter in Havre and on the Hi-Line. Sure, it can, and will still snow, and it will still get cold up there from time to time. But anyone who lives, or has lived, in Havre can attest that the return of spring just means more to us then it does to many people across the country. It means more because winter’s, mild or rough, are long and exhausting in Havre, and in most of Montana. And when you finally see that light at the end of the tunn...

Thanks to a purchase former Cut Bank legendary head coach Jim Gregg made decades ago, the Havre High tennis teams usually get to make their season debut no matter the weather. And Havre did quite well, too. The Blue Pony boys beat Cut Bank 4-3 in the opening dual, with the doubles teams Carter...

By Havre Daily Staff Last tennis season was a tough one for the Havre Blue Ponies, and first-year head coach Jeff Miller. First, there was brutal winter weather that just wouldn't go away, putting the Ponies way behind from the get-go. Then, there was the monumental coaching change at HHS, as Miller took over for his former head coach George Ferguson, who retired from HHS tennis after 20 years at the helm. Needless to say, none of it was easy for Miller. However, as spring...
The Havre High track and field program has been growing every year under head coach Kari Filius. And the Blue Ponies are hoping this spring is the culmination of all that growth as the Ponies are loaded on both teams. The HHS girls team is led by a talented group of returns in all events, including Clara Haslem, Britton Elliot, Clara Laird and Kyanna Jarvis as seniors. Junior Macee May and sprinter Kaydence Reieter will also be huge point-getters for the Ponies, as will...
Editor’s note: This version corrects the name of Blue Pony girls fastpitch team member Selah Dawson. Spring can be late arriving to Havre. But, whether spring is truly here or not, spring sports are and that includes the return of Havre High girls fastpich softball. The Blue Ponies are once again led by longtime head coach Tony Vigliotti, and the 2024 squad returns to the diamond as the Eastern A champions from 2023. HHS is hoping to make a similar run again this season. And w...
