  • Supports efforts to make abuses at Northern public

    Carol J. Ortman|Updated Jun 26, 2014
    2

I am writing to thank the Havre Daily News for taking legal action to make public the allegation of human rights abuses at Montana State University-Northern. The taxpayers of Montana fund the public university system, and we have the right to know what is happening in our public universities. I have had concerns for some time now that the commissioner of higher education and the Board of Regents seem to sweep serious problems in our universities under the rug. Why are the hard-working taxpayers of Montana being forced to...

  • Help out at Day of Action - and get fed

    Sam Clawson|Updated Jun 19, 2014

On June 21, United Way of Hill County is celebrating its Day of Action. This year volunteers will have an opportunity to help prepare 65,000 meals for those in need in Hill County. We estimate that we will need 200 volunteers in order to accomplish this feat in four hours. Who in Havre will accept the challenge? Volunteers can sign up by calling 265-6561. We'll be meeting at the Methodist Church at 410 5th Ave. There are two shifts available for volunteers, one from noon to 2 p.m. and another from 2 to 4 p.m. As a thank-you...

  • Elks Lodge encourages citizens to observe Flag Day

    Bob Nieuwenhuyse|Updated Jun 13, 2014

Havre Elks Lodge No. 1201 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks again was very proud and honored to be part of the community Memorial Day service, melding our Flag Day tradition with their Memorial Day service, exemplifying the motto: "One Nation, Under God" — one community, one nation, honoring our flag, our country, our troops. Throughout our American history, the significance of the U.S. flag's colors has come to correspond with those of the great seal of our country: white signifying purity and innocence; red h...

  • Havre Pride showed great community spirit

    Debbie Vandeberg|Updated May 21, 2014

Havre Pride cleanup this past Saturday was the second attempt to hold the activity — as the April date was taken over by Mother Nature and some bad weather. To those who braved the April date ... thank you so very much for your participation. When weather plays a role in an event and a quick decision is needed to be made to let folks know about changes, our most immediate means to get the word out is the radio. And, we know we missed some of you, and we are sorry for that. And, those folks out this past Saturday, we thank y...

  • Wallet found, Canadian visitor is happy

    Shirley Soutar|Updated May 19, 2014

While traveling through your town on May 8 from Alberta to Ontario, we stopped to shop at your mall. When I went to pay for my purchases, I realized that I didn't have my wallet. After searching through the parking lot and the car and asking at a few stores, I went into Herbergers and asked them if anyone had found a wallet. A very nice sales lady hugged me and told me that her friend (I think her name was Cynthia) had found a wallet in the parking lot and had brought it into the store. Although I offered her money to pass...

    Trina Crawford|Updated May 16, 2014

This week is National Salvation Army Week, and I would like to acknowledge the great staff and volunteers we have here at the Salvation Army in Havre and the great community of Havre. Through your efforts, we have been successful in helping more than 1,600 families and individuals since Oct. 1 — the start off our our fiscal year — to present. I am very thankful to our table sponsors for the annual meeting that was held in April 8. Gary & Leo's Fresh Foods, Rose Coulee Ranch, Bob and Gen Kaftan, Charles and Patricia Floyd, the...

  • Problems at veterans hospitals are disgusting

    Don Mahlum|Updated May 9, 2014

I and other local veterans are really disgusted with the reported action by the Department of Veterans Affairs in Arizona where, according to TV reports, the VA has had possibly up to some-40 veterans die awaiting medical treatment at the VA medical treatment place. If these reports are correct, this is no way to treat people who are giving so much for our country. In my opinion, I hope they didn't get a bonus for doing an "outstanding" job. I worked as a teacher for many years for the taxpayers and I did not ever get a...

  • HHS Close Up students appreciate community backing

Havre High Close Up Students|Updated May 9, 2014

We would like to especially thank Tom and the Eagles Club for letting us host our breakfast there, as well as PJ’s Restaurant and Gary & Leo's Fresh Foods. Thank you to all of the businesses and friends who donated items for our silent auction and raffle. We would especially like to thank our parents who have put in countless hours to help us achieve our f...

  • Former Gov. Racicot should have stood up for Barry Beach

    Jude Mahlum|Updated May 6, 2014
    2

I am extremely disappointed that Mark Racicot lacked the courage to attend the review of Barry Beach's clemency application, instead, choosing to deliver his message to the board hours later. I was disappointed but not surprised. This is just another example of the sneaky way he conducts himself. Had he been there, he would have heard many people speak quite eloquently about the reasons they feel Barry deserves clemency. They were heartfelt and practical. These are people who did not know Barry prior to his being released...

  • Why do single moms pay taxes, when corporations don't?

    John Snider|Updated May 6, 2014

Editor: I am writing Clay Christian, Montana commissioner of high education, Paul Tuss, chair of the Board of Regents, and the various university presidents and chancellors at the public universities in our state if they will join me in demanding that U.S. corporations begin to pay their fair share of taxes. Higher education could be free in Montana and the rest of our country if corporations started to fulfill their civic duty and pay taxes. According to Citizens for Tax Justice, 26 corporations, including General Electric,...

  • Kudos to Bullock for offering breath of fresh air

    Loren Rose|Updated Apr 24, 2014

The recently passed Farm Bill provided an opportunity for states to assist the Forest Service in getting much-needed work done on federal land. States had 60 days to designate appropriate lands to the agency. Our governor, Steve Bullock, did a wonderful job reallocating resources to meet this timeline. Gov. Bullock enlisted help from his staff, the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, the U.S. Forest Service and an ad-hoc group of stakeholders. The lands designated were based on hard data collected annually by th...

  • Stranded travelers appreciate Havre helpfulness

Recently over the Easter weekend, my wife and I traveled to Harlem, Mont., to attend a birthday celebration for her aunt who had just turned 91 years old. We traveled over on Saturday and returned back to Pablo on Sunday, Easter Day — Rose Gilbert’s birthday. The Gilbert/Bahr families had a great time. We checked out of our room in Chinook early Sunday morning and were heading back to Pablo for Easter dinner with our children, as dinner was at 2 p.m, and lo and behold the inevitable happened, a flat tire. We were then abo...

  • Car seat safety is critical

    Mary Owens|Updated Apr 21, 2014

Many people are wondering what is the law on child passenger seats and where can we get them checked. The Montana law for child passenger seats: Section 1. Section 61-9-420, MCA, is amended to read: "61-9-420. Child safety restraint systems — standards — exemptions. (1) If a child under 6 years of age and weighing less than 60 pounds is a passenger in a motor vehicle, that motor vehicle must be equipped with one child safety restraint for each child in the vehicle and each child must be properly restrained. The child saf...

  • Rocky Boy needs a new generation of leaders

It's a disgrace to hear all about the fraud on the rez. It was a wonderful thing to receive all of that money for the water projects. The tribe has come a very long way. I remember when I/we used to haul water. My brother Duncan was more like my parent to me, and he still is, as I turn to him to listen to my woes. He used to be a tribal council member at Rocky Boy. I recall when the tribe was awarded millions to start up a judicial system on the rez. That's even coming further in life. It's also understandable when someone...

  • Thoughts on Rocky Boy corruption

    Jolene Standing Rock|Updated Apr 18, 2014

Our kids have only one hope of escaping fear in their lives. That hope is what I call Teacher, we as a whole community. The symbol of tough love education is: Don’t lean toward excuses, drugs and danger, but to lean toward health and happiness. But how can we strive to become better in our community unless we come together. I am hoping that God answers my prayers for all the corruption happening in Rocky Boy. Can we get justice? How about forfeit all tribal money you stole, cars, trucks, houses, land and cattle. You sure in t...

  • Concern over Border Patrol involvement during standoff

    Mike Gordon|Updated Apr 16, 2014

I live in a small town in northwestern Montana, close to the Canadian border — 7 miles — and I saw a picture in The Daily Interlake of an incident that happened in Havre Monday, April 7, with a picture of a federal Border Patrol officer holding an automatic rifle on a suspected citizen. Why are there federal police doing local city, county and state police duties? Are the local and state police in fear of harm or that someone may stand up, may not be afraid of them? Are there so many or too many federal police that they hav...

  • Benefit programs encourage people not to work

    Pegi Rambo|Updated Apr 16, 2014

I recently read an article in your paper about increasing the minimum wage. I had to think about how and if this would impact the food stamp problem. This is strictly my opinion, but here goes. A lot of smaller businesses would close. A few of the bigger businesses would cut their staffing down. It is a given that prices would go up on everything. Those who already are making above the minimum would have little or no chance of getting an additional raise. Now we have a lot of what used to be middle class workers down to what...

  • Thanks for support for fifth- and sixth-grade basketball

    Greg Drummer|Updated Apr 15, 2014

On behalf of the members of our fifth- and sixth-grade travel basketball team — Jace Leeds, Clint Owens, Bradyn Winchell, Josh Warp, Jeremiah Hughes, Quinn Springer, Nolan Lotton, Max Olson and Daniel Bryant — I would like to thank all those who helped us to have a very enjoyable and productive season. Thanks to the parents of each of the players for the time and effort they put into this so that the team could travel to so many tournaments and practices. A special thanks is given to Gary Baltrusch and Dr. Hugo (Mike) Gib...

  • Don't prohibit ethical trapping

    Robert Sheppard|Updated Apr 7, 2014

It seems like there is always some special interest group trying to impose their limited set of values on all the people of Montana. As I write this, an animal activists group is attempting to ban trapping on nearly 30 million acres of public land. I have been a trapper for over 50 years. I do everything I can to make sure my trapping is safe, effective, ethical, and targeted. I make sure my traps are well off trails used by others. We need to be able to all share our public lands and put them to use for our individual intere...

  • Many deserve thanks for supporting seniors

    Bobbi Teasley|Updated Apr 3, 2014

We are very fortunate to live in such a greet place. The community is supportive, and the people are wonderful. The community is critical to enhancing the lives of the elderly, keeping them connected and engaged. We wanted to acknowledge people and businesses that contribute their time and resources on a regular basis. Dominique and Western Drug: Thank you for your weekly blood pressure checks, monthly health and wellness presentations, and contributions to the prizes for the Silver Sneakers exercise class. • Amtrak provided great service during stayover

    Charlotte Faust|Updated Apr 1, 2014

I would like to take this opportunity to commend Amtrak personnel for their great service on my recent unscheduled trip to Havre. Despite all the delays — 12 hours late getting to Havre and seven hours late getting to Everett — none of which were Amtrak's fault, the Amtrak staff did everything they could to keep the passengers informed and comfortable. They repeatedly apologized and graciously bore the blame for the delays. They were right there giving directions and helping with baggage when we had to take buses around ava...

  • Time changes are 'a bunch of nonsense'

    Loretta Fredriksen|Updated Apr 1, 2014

I agree with the woman from Great Falls about the change in time every year ("No more time change for Montana," Opinion page, March 25). That was a bunch of nonsense to start. Some people take medications every day and get all mixed up with the stupid time. Also some people have babies on a schedule and that also gets fouled up. People who started this time change belong in the mental institution to get them back in their right mind. Loretta Fredriksen Havre...

  • Abolish trapping on public lands

    Tom Petrillo|Updated Mar 31, 2014

Trappers are warped. They don't understand the meaning of compassion and seem not to care about the intense suffering they cause. My dog, Dude, was caught in a steel leghold trap while on a much-deserved run in a Montana national forest. He was badly injured and I had to carry him nearly 3 miles to my vehicle. Fortunately a vet saved the little guy's leg but he told me Dude was one of the lucky ones. Please help stop this barbaric practice by supporting the Trap-free Montana Initiative. Sometimes heritage is wrong, and in...
