Editor: In October, the Havre Post Office is promoting sales of the Breast Cancer Research semi-postal stamp. The price for a pane of 20 breast cancer research semi-postal stamps is $12 with 20 cents of the purchase sent to provide funds for research, A semi-postal stamp is a postage stamp issuesd to raise money and is sold over and above the cost of the postage. This is Banned Books Week. This is one of our favorite weeks here at the Havre-Hill County Library. It is an annual event celebrating intellectual freedom and the importance of the First Amendment. Banned Books Week is all about your right to read, even books that contain unorthodox and unpopular opinions. It is about your right to have these materials publicly available to you, so that you can form your own opinions and come to your own conclusions. Intellectual freedom is a cornerstone for democracy, and it is explicitly pr...
Events such as Havre Festival Days are a success because so many people join together to make it happen. Without the sponsors, the businesses, community organizations, the community support and the volunteers, Festival Days would look a whole lot different. The weekend’s success would not have been obtained without the continued support from the many volunteers and the willingness of the many entities of the community to come together on this third weekend in September to throw a community celebration for all to enjoy. Our m...
Editor: How very befitting and kind for you to honor the memory, the legacy, the wonderment of Bonnie Bennett ... your legendary former newspaper carrier. I said to our own Havre Daily News carrier, "You are filling some mighty big shoes. Bonnie Bennett delivered this very paper, perhaps had your route." My late husband, Dick Schafer, had said that "the entire Hi-Line took care of Bonnie," and he added, "In essence, I think she takes care of all of us." For me, I will remember Bonnie, always on the job, at the Eagles...
Editor: Last night at soccer a tragedy was fortunately averted when two dogs almost got into a fight. They should not be there or anywhere there are large crowds of people and food, including Festival Days activities, parades, craft fairs and farmers market. Why bring them? Leave them at home. There are so many children playing and running. Where is your common sense? Apparently where your dogs should be — at home. Kim Cripps Havre...
Editor: Fall is a great time to take another look at our community and do some needed fall “housecleaning.” A clean community shows pride and is more inviting than a community with dirty sidewalks, weeds growing through the cracks and borrow pits scattered with litter. Havre Pride is a community-wide effort to clean up our town. The goal is to first get the community members working together to clean up our town, and second, to educate people on the subject of litter and community pride. The Havre Area Chamber of Com...
Editor: As a U.S. Forest Service retiree, I know the benefits of a well-managed forest. Over the last 20-plus years, I have seen the federal government's "on the ground" forest management deteriorate. Lack of timber sales and excessive access closures have not served the public or the resource well. Many years ago I helped found Montanans For Multiple Use as a way to involve the public in the decision-making process of forest planning. We opposed the Forest Service spending public funds to rip out dozens upon dozens of...
Editor: To area ag producers, for 17 years, the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce's Agri-Business Committee has organized the Ag Appreciation Banquet with incredible support through business sponsorships. This has been an event the committee and community have truly enjoyed. Havre’s banquet is one of the largest Ag Appreciation Banquets in the state. The purpose of the banquet is to recognize and thank all of you in the agriculture industry for your valuable contribution to the Havre economy as well as to that of Montana. The A...
As this year's baseball season ends in Havre, I would like to thank all the volunteer coaches who help get us through the months of game and practices. The time commitment is great, and your time invaluable. Without you, nothing would get done and nothing would be learned. Thank you. Umpires: I would like to thank you for all the endless hours of working in the sun and listening to all the "stuff" you have to listen to. Your dedication is awesome. I know how hard it is being "perfect" every game — just as some coaches are. I...
Editor: A heartfelt thank-you to Paul and Randy for helping Trikers from Iowa. On July 14, we were traveling through Havre on our way to Glacier National Park. We had serious wheel-bearing troubles on our trike and were just glad that we made it into town by 7 p.m. Paul Nugent was driving by and saw our distress and offered to help and meet us as the motel we were trying to get in. He pulled up in his truck and right behind was Randy Rude whom he had called to help out. They lent us tools, dug right in to find the problem,...
I was a member of the Lights football team from 2006-2009. I currently work as a teacher in Helena. I was greatly disappointed when learning that coach Mark Samson was no longer the football coach at Montana State University-Northern. Coach Samson brought countless student-athletes to Havre to play for the Lights, who including myself would not have attended Northern if it wasn't for Coach Samson allowing us to live our dreams to play college football. As a coach, I run into many former teammates who are now coaching and teac...
Another school year is just around the corner. Fall activities are beginning, teachers are busy getting rooms and materials ready, parents are getting back-to-school supplies, and students are excited and apprehensive about new classes and/or new teachers. There's an uneasiness, yet eagerness to get started. For students, it's the next step or school year seemingly huge in a young life. In 1964, this marked the senior year for me and my classmates and the opening of the "new" Havre High School building. It brought great...
Editor: This past week has been very trying for the Montana State University-Northern community. Coach Mark Samson is a highly respected individual in the state of Montana. When he was told he had to resign or be fired, it cut deep into the many supporters of the MSU-Northern program. Yes, what he did was wrong, but if you look deep into it and why, you will see that the real blame starts with the leadership at MSU-Northern. MSU-Northern really dropped the ball on this one. Mr. Jim Limbaugh gets his check, and a very sizable...
Mark Samson is a sound football coach and a man of great integrity, a man who always gets along with his players. I can say this because he coached for me when we were winning Frontier Conference championships at Carroll College. In my opinion, he was treated unfairly by the chancellor and athletic director in this matter. Who does the chancellor answer to? How can he force the resignation of so many people at Northern? As an old coach, I feel it is my responsibility to let the fans of Northern football know what has...
Montana Fish Wildlife and Park's proposed Wolf Stamp hearing on Aug. 14 was well attended. No matter the stamp name, all wildlife will benefit from education, habitat acquisition, increased game wardens and nonlethal measures to address conflicts with livestock and wildlife. As FWP thinks outside the box for funding and innovations, the cost of administering Montana's trapping program exceeds the revenue generated. Unlike guns, archery and fishing equipment, there is no excise tax on traps. While FWP proposes increasing the...
Thanks to everyone in Havre who helped me raise $3,441 for Relay for Life this year. Thanks to the businesses that helped me make a raffle basket to raise funds for the American Legion Liberty Bells Relay For Life Team. This will be my last year as a part of a Relay For Team, but I will continue to walk as an individual. I can still collect donations from individuals who wish to make a direct donation to the American Cancer Society. I will continue to buy luminarias for my family members. I would also like to thank the...
Ever since Bresnan Communications was taken over by Charter, it has been nothing but trouble. My service was out Sunday and Monday, and I called the 800 number and their answer was: "We are working on it." My service has been out at least once a month since the takeover. Their TV commercials state better and more services are coming on the way. I heard Charter was being bought out by Time Warner Cable, which I hope is true. Is anyone else fed up with Charter? Let your voice be known about their poor service. Doug Marden...
Now that the noise of the Fourth of July is over and the fair is done, I have these comments to make. Havre City Council, without any consideration for our feelings, allowed fireworks to be set off inside the city limits. The first year of that ordinance my dog, who is older, was terrified and my neighbor's garage was set afire by a rocket of fireworks. This fire resulted in some individuals shouting outside my door and forcing me out of my own home, being very forceful and pushy. So next year I have figured out what my solut...
The Havre-Hill County Library Summer Reading Program was a smashing success. We want to say thank you to our generous donors: Creative Leisure, Dairy Queen, Radio Shack, Carol Pleninger, Chris Comp, Mark Peterson, Jason Barkus, James Dahl, Tim Solomon, Havre Police Protective Association and Friends of the Library. With your contributions, we had the highest numbers we have seen in a long time. A total of 355 people signed up for the program. Eighty-three participants completed their goal with a total of 165,066 minutes read,...
I have always enjoyed the local Hill County fair, now known as the Great Northern Fair, especially when I was a child and involved in 4-H. Now that I am grown up, I still enjoy watching my nieces and nephews with their 4-H projects. This is why I am so disappointed and saddened by your lack of coverage of the recent 4-H doings at the fair. You showed pictures of the derby and gave the results; you gave the results of the Junior Rodeo and the NRA Rodeo. The only 4-H coverage you did was the horse judging, which you missed...
The best $10 bucks I've spent all summer was for the tickets to "Sympathy Jones: The New Secret Agent Musical," directed by Audrey Barger and Angela Pratt. It was wonderfully cast and performed by a tremendously talented group of Havre's youth. Emily Simonson, as Sympathy Jones, secret agent wanna-be, packed a punch. She sang, danced and even did her own stunts! She was counterbalanced by the vivacious and vicious villainess in the most deliciously derelict of dresses — Aria Pratt, as Kitty Hawk. She played a very b...
I'm writing to thank the public and the press for following the Public Service Commission's nine-day-long hearing on NorthWestern Energy's proposed acquisition of a dozen dams. The PSC expects to make a decision on this matter in September, and that decision will have consequences decades to come for Montana consumers. There is still time to offer public comment on the deal, and you can do so online at http://psc.mt.gov. The fundamental issue in the proceeding boils down to...
In light of recent events, the staff at Western Drug Pharmacy would like to take a moment to say thank you to our community. The amount of support we have received over the past few weeks from patients, local businesses and associations has truly been overwhelming. This has been a difficult time for us, and your kind words are appreciated more than you can know. A special thanks goes out to the dispatchers and police officers at the Havre Police Department for their professionalism, time and efficiency following the...
We began our vacation from Saskatchewan to Las Vegas July 19, when we barely got to Havre to find our Dodge Journey was losing power. We stopped at a local Havre business who referred us to Tilleman Motor Co. Our journey made it to the highway turnout so ended up pushing it across the highway as one of their employees came running out to help. The possible diagnosis was a faulty alternator but no part was available in Havre. After many phone calls by these employees, they found a part in Great Falls. My husband was able to go...
Being a high school student, you would expect me to enjoy my summer days in blissful laziness, or be working at a surmner job. Quite the opposite; I have been scripting, designing and filming a documentary with the theme illustrating how fashion has been influenced by history until most recent decades. This documentary would not have been possible without the help of Gary & Leo’s Fresh Foods, The Key and Messiah Lutheran Church. Gary & Leo’s and The Key opened their doors accommodating my filming needs, moved displays and allow...
