  • Letter to the Editor: Reporters should report both sides of political issues

    Updated Mar 18, 2015

Editor: The Havre Daily News coverage of the legislative videos at noon on Tuesdays should include both sides of the discussion not just the speakers and pictures of the Democratic party. It shows a bias on the part of the Havre Daily News. With subscribers from both sides of every issues, local newspaper and their reporters should strive to be bipartisan in their reporting. Charlotte Faust Havre...

  • Letter to the Editor: Stick to facts on Medicaid expansion

    Updated Mar 16, 2015

Editor: State Rep. Stephanie Hess, R-Havre, in her explanation of why she voted against the governor's plan to expand Medicaid to 70,000 deserving Montanans, cited several incorrect statistics. She claimed that in the first year the program would cost Montana $34 million a year and that it eventually would cost the state $250 million a year. The fiscal note by the governor's budget office attached to House Bill 249 says the program would have saved the state $30 million in the first year, $29 million in the second, $14...

  • Letter to the Editor:

    Updated Mar 6, 2015

Editor: It wasn't all that long ago I was walking door to door, campaigning for Havre City Council. I was greeted by many with a smile and a thank-you. Others were curious if I was a Democrat or Republican. The remaining concerned citizens asked what I would do to address the streets. "Fix the streets" became the obvious campaign tag line. At that point, I was doing my best to appeal to the voters. Honestly, I had very little knowledge of the actual costs associated with such a massive project. I was unaware of how little...

  • Letter to the Editor:

    Updated Mar 5, 2015

Editor: Montana's Hi-Line is generally associated with grasslands, endless fields of wheat, large herds of cattle, and remoteness. It is all that, but it is also a place where a wilderness experience can be found. For those willing to get off the highway and explore the back roads, you'll find rugged prairie, breaks, badlands and island ranges that offer a natural setting where opportunities for solitude and primitive recreation are as great or greater than the mountains to the west. Most people have heard of the C.M. Russell...

  • Letter to the Editor: Change rules on milk expiration date

    Updated Mar 4, 2015

Editor: I am writing this letter after finding out that the date on a gallon of milk is not an expiration date, while following the recent attempt at legislation. First, my family and friends that I have talked to have all thought the date on the container was a date that told us how long the milk was good. To my surprise, I found out that it is a date for which the seller could not sell the milk any longer and had to destroy it. To make things worse, it was testified that the milk was good for another seven to 10 days,...

  • Letter to the Editor: Enforce ban on cellphone use while driving

    Updated Mar 4, 2015
    1

Editor: Where is the outrage? Propose chickens in town and there is all kinds of opposition with feedback to the councilmen. Why not with people driving with cellphones in their hands. How many accidents have there been or how many injured people have there been? I have been concerned for some time that this ordinance isn’t being enforced. I see a lot of people driving with cell phones at their ear or texting. It doesn’t matter whether I’m driving my vehicle or the school bus. There are some people who can multi-task, but t...

    Updated Mar 3, 2015

Editor: Havre High School Close Up would like to thank all of the community members, businesses and family members who supported our pancake breakfast fundraiser on Feb. 22. We would especially like to thank the Eagles Club for its continued support of our organization and fundraising efforts to travel to Washington, D.C. • Letter to the Editor: People should be free to make the ultimate decision

    Updated Mar 2, 2015

Editor: This is the written testimony I submitted to the Montana House on House Bill 477: As a taxpayer and citizen of the state of Montana, I see HB 477 as an attempt by the government, to take away a freedom that I believe the Supreme Court of the state of Montana, has basically reaffirmed through the Baxter decision. We call ourselves the land of the free. We recruit, train and pay young men and women to defend that freedom both here and abroad. We are free to choose where we want to live, to choose friends, to choose a...

  • Letter to the Editor: Alzheimer's disease is the ultimate thief

    Updated Mar 2, 2015

Editor: On the heels of the big Oscar win for the film “Still Alice,” many of us are asking ourselves “Am I at risk for Alzheimer’s?” The answer is, if you have a brain, you are at risk. Alzheimer’s disease is a global epidemic. Worldwide, at least 44 million people are living with the disease. Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. It kills more Americans than diabetes, and more than breast cancer and prostate cancer combined. More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s d...

  • Letter to the Editor: Oppose effort to ban sage grouse hunting

    Updated Mar 2, 2015

Editor: Every sportsman should be aware of Senate Bill 247. It deals with the closure of one of our hunting seasons in Montana, specifically the closure of all sage grouse hunting in the state. It is an attack on hunting plain and simple. Anti-hunters applaud the bill. It takes the process of season setting away from our Fish, Wildlife and Parks and puts it into the hands of politicians. Our sage grouse are managed under a plan that took years to develop. It is called the Adaptive Management System. In Montana, sage grouse...

  • Letter to the Editor: AG thanks Hess for her sponsorship of anti-abuse bills

    Updated Mar 2, 2015

Editor: I would like to thank Rep. Stephanie Hess of Havre for sponsoring one of the bills I brought forward in this legislative session. House Bill 75 creates a sexual assault prosecution unit within my office’s Prosecution Services Bureau. Sexual assault is a particularly heinous and prevalent crime that impacts for too many in our state and nation. One in four college women report surviving rape or attempted rape at some point in their lifetime. Twenty-five percent of women and 16 percent of men report having been s...

  • Letter to the Editor: Volunteers worked hard for 9C tourney

    Updated Feb 27, 2015

Editor: Communities that do things together are stronger. This past weekend was a true testament to this thought, as many worked together to make the 9C tournament a huge success. The Athletic Committee of the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Havre High School and District 9C, would like to extend a sincere thank-you to the 60-plus volunteers who worked the recent Boys and Girls District Basketball Tournament at Havre High School, Feb. 18-21. • Letter to the Editor: A lot of people, groups help Boy Scouts

    Updated Feb 27, 2015

Editor: There have been many individuals, families, businesses, organizations and other groups in and Havre and along the Hi-Line that have been very supportive of Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and we would like to take this time to say "Thank You" on behalf of Boy Scout Troop 1438. First off, we would like to thank First Lutheran Church which has continued year after year to be our chartered organization, allowing us to be a part of the annual Lutefisk and Swedish Meatball Dinner and allowing us to use the facility for our...

We would also like to thank John Ita, the administration and the community members for their fine support for this program. • Letter to the Editor: Headline in Rocky Boy case was wrong

    Updated Feb 24, 2015

Editor: I read the headline in your Feb. 9 paper. It read: "Rocky Boy embezzler trial scheduled in federal court." Then you go on to mention a person's name in connection to the trial date. It is apparent that you have judged this person named in connection to this trial date. It is apparent that you have judged this person to be an embezzler even before his trial. This seems to be a prejudicial statement that could sway opinion and the jury. You do not have all the facts, and I find this to be irresponsible and...

  • Letter to the Editor: Tester is not working for citizens

    Updated Feb 19, 2015

Editor: During his successful 2006 Senate campaign, Jon Tester took an unambiguous stand against illegal immigration. His website said, in part: “Our first priority must be to secure ports and borders to keep out terror threats, illegal drugs and illegal immigrants. Jon Tester opposes amnesty for those who are here illegally. People who want to come to America should follow the rules — and we should enforce them. There should be no cuts in line.” But that was then. The House-passed appropriation bill for the Department of Ho...

    Updated Feb 16, 2015

Editor: It’s the 40th birthday of the Samoa cookie and Girl Scout cookie season is here. Girl Scouts will be knocking on doors through Feb. 22 to take cookie orders and will set up their cookie booths around the community, March 27-April 19. Of course, we will have all your favorites: thin mints, Samoas, tagalongs, do-si-dos, trefoils and Savannah smiles — and this year we are introducing two new cookie flavors, the rah-rah raisin and the toffee-tastic, which is gluten free and only available at booth sales. Everyone kno...

  • Letter to the Editor: Northern should cancel tarot card readings

    Updated Feb 16, 2015

Editor: I am in agreement with Kathy Shirilla pertaining to tarot card reading to be held at Montana State University-Northern. It is not a good thing to have. Hopefully Northern will cancel this event. Dona Woods Havre...

  • Letter to the Editor: HDN reporter did good job on MAT story

    Updated Feb 16, 2015

Editor: I was very pleased to see that your reporter, John Paul Schmidt, included two full paragraphs describing the new play being produced by Montana Actors’ Theatre at Cowan Hall’s Little Theatre. In his story announcing tryouts for the plan, "The Lieutenant of Inishmore," Schmidt provided a general description of the text of the play, presented the play's humorous perspective and described the general development of the play — without giving away any information that might be vital to its enjoyment by a future audie...

  • Letter to the Editor:

    Updated Feb 13, 2015
    1

Editor: Paranormal activity? Psychic/medium sense? Thomas Edison’s Telephone to the Dead? Tarot card readings? Ghost investigations? Most of us would probably say that is “out there.” Most of us would probably say this could be a gathering in California or New York City. Lo and behold, our naiveté is exposed. In Monday’s Havre Daily News MSU-Northern announces they have invited Christopher Moon and his mother, Paulette, to engage in all of the activities listed above. Also, this event is free. Well … not really. Attendance is...

  • Letter to the Editor: Young man proves 'Havre Has It'

    Updated Feb 6, 2015

Editor: Sunday morning when it was so very cold, I noticed the tire pressure light had come on in my car. Living close to the Emporium, I went there for help. A kind and polite employee checked my tire pressure and filled the one that was low with air from the compressor which he had to lug out from the store. When I thanked him, he said it was his job to help his customers with whatever they needed. Hats off to the young man who didn't hesitate to lend a helping hand. I've always known that "Havre Has It," but this was...

  • Letter to the Editor: Teen dating violence is serious issue

    Updated Feb 6, 2015

Editor: February is National Teen Dating Violence Prevention and Awareness Month, and it is critical that we take this time to remember that domestic violence is not just a problem for adults. One in three adolescents in the U.S. will be a victim of physical, emotional or sexual abuse from a dating partner. Nearly 80 percent of girls who have been physically abused in their intimate relationships continue to date their abuser. And two-thirds of teens who are in an abusive relationship never tell anyone about the abuse....

  • Letter to the Editor: Saddened by closing of the Gildford Merc

    Updated Feb 3, 2015

Editor: I'd like to take a minute or two to address one of the biggest news stories on the Hi-Line this past week: the closing of the Gildford Mercantile. The Merc has been a part of my life since I was a kid. I bought penny candy from John Campbell, rented movies from Brad and Sandra Ford, walked over on high school lunch break to grab a snack from Michelle and John Helmbrecht and, as an adult, purchased dinner for my family from Ted and Laura Pacheco Hauser Throughout the years, the Merc has been a fixture of life on the...

    Updated Feb 3, 2015

Editor: Greetings friends and relatives of the Chippewa Cree Tribe, My name is Dustin J. Whitford and the intention of this letter is to inform the people of the Chippewa Cree Tribe of my recent submittal as a candidate for the open position of Chippewa Cree tribal chairman. In the 26 months of being on the Business Committee I have accomplished a few goals that I have set and would like to highlight those accomplishments in this letter: • Established and maintained various professional relationships with tribal, state and f...

  • Letter to the Editor: MSU should treat Northern more fairly

    Updated Feb 3, 2015

Editor: In Montana, all universities are equal, but some universities are more equal than other universities. Waded Cruzado is fond of saying that Montana State University is one university. Of course, nobody is fooled. We know Bozeman comes first and gets the lion’s share of students and resources. Over the last 10 years, Bozeman’s enrollment has increased 21 percent while Northern’s enrollment has decreased 19 percent. Bozeman is allowed by the regents to add programs, while at the same time, they are vetoing North...
