Editor, The Chamber of Commerce Havre Pride Committee would like to thank those who came out this past Saturday to pick up Havre. As with any project, it takes many to make it work and be successful. There were many community folks out and about Saturday along with groups from the hospital and the college. Thank-you to everyone for a job well done! A thank-you also goes to our local media teams for getting the word out about Havre Pride and Recycle Hi-Line and to Zip Trip for agreeing to be a Havre Pride dumpster site. A...
Editor, I am compassionate, yet realistic — my husband is a hunter and fisherman. I heard outrageous lies when approached by a trapper at his booth during a recent fair saying that animal rights people are trying to outlaw hunting and fishing and I-177 is just to get a foot in the door. The trapper bragged that he sells his services to ranchers who want to get rid of coyotes, wolves, and foxes. I asked him about the domino effect of killing these predators, i.e., being overrun with mice and voles, and he stated that he k...
Editor, Suicide is an issue in our community, but what can we do to stop it? As the chair of the Havre NAMI — National Alliance on Mental Illness — I would encourage you to attend the Second Annual Suicide Awareness Walk Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Cowan Hall clock tower on the MSU-Northern campus. The walk provides an opportunity to unite those who have been affected by suicide and the community of Hill County through increasing awareness and prevention, decreasing mental health stigma, and offering support to suicide sur...
Editor, On Aug. 31, Montana’s rollback of access to medical cannabis went into effect. Thursday, the Montana State Attorney General’s Office was served with a copy of a complaint filed by several citizens, two of whom are Montanan’s called-to-action who served this country in Iraq and Afghanistan, along with a decades-long public servant. On Aug. 31, the Montana Supreme Court’s decision — effectively killing Montana’s medical cannabis program — became effective.. One part of the new law requires registered providers to...
Editor, What we need to see in our next state auditor is someone who understands what it takes to help small businesses grow and create Montana jobs. It deeply concerns us that Jesse Laslovich has none of that experience, and worst of all, his record shows him to be anti-business and anti-jobs, and that kind of record is wrong for Montana. While serving in the Montana Legislature, Jesse received failing business scores from the Montana Chamber of Commerce. A review of these scores should give voters cause for concern: He...
Friends and neighbors, The Highway 2 Association has been the voice of the 4 for 2 mission for 15 years. Our mission has been to enhance economic development in the U.S. Highway 2 corridor by constructing a four-lane highway. An adequate transportation system — 4 for 2 — is the prerequisite for economic development. Eighty percent of businesses locate in or near communities with a four-lane highway or better. It’s important to note that the Great Northern Corridor from Seattle to Chicago and Rochester, New York, serves some...
Editor, I have been a high school math teacher in Butte for the last eight years. I am also a trustee for the Southwestern Montana Central Labor Council, a candidate for House District 74, and the National Education Association director for Montana. Out of all of these positions, the most important is that of teacher. My colleagues and I teach Montana’s future. That’s why I care so much about who is elected Superintendent of Public Instruction. That’s why I strongly support Melissa Romano. Nothing matters more than our child...
Editor, Are you a farmer who leases state land to plant crops on? Are you a rancher who grazes livestock on State lands? If so, it is imperative that you check out I-177 which will appear on the Nov. 8 ballot. A farmer who leases State land and has badgers digging holes in the field while they are hunting gophers will no longer be able to trap the badgers until all non-lethal methods have been tried by the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks for 30 days. A rancher who grazes livestock on leased public lands and has a...
Editor, Kristen Juras is running for the Montana Supreme Court, and I support her wholeheartedly. I have known her since 1989, and worked closely with her as a practicing lawyer and as a law professor. If elected to the Court, Kristen will be the only justice with an extensive background in business, property rights, and agricultural law. She is a fourth generation Montanan, the only candidate for the Court with an agricultural background raised in a rural community, and the only candidate to file and litigate a water rights...
Editor, As a retired teacher, I am deeply offended by the misinformation being mailed to Montanans by the out-of-state group Americans for Prosperity. The mailer claims Gov. Steve Bullock turned his back on special needs children by vetoing HB 322. HB 322 was a terrible bill. I’m glad Gov. Bullock vetoed it. HB 322 would have pulled millions of dollars out of Montana’s public schools for the benefit of private schools. It applied not just to children with special needs, but to their siblings and children of military parents a...
Editor, On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce and the Town Square Committee we would like to thank all the bands that made this summer’s Sounds on the Square a huge success. The time the 10 bands dedicated to each Wednesday evening in the months of June, July and August shows their commitment to the Sounds on the Square and to the community. As with so many activities that take place in Havre, Sounds on the Square wouldn’t happen without the volunteer help and the financial generosity of those believing in keeping Havre a gre...
Editor, I am fully behind Greg Gianforte for governor. We sadly and urgently need to unseat current Gov. Steve Bullock. I have talked with Gianforte several times, but feel he likely needs more truthful information on why neither the water compact nor a hugely embellished, over-riding Tester bill must not be allowed passage. Montana candidates as well as current legislators, including at federal level, have been extensively propagandized and misinformed by well-financed compact proponents. The CSKT compact, in combination...
Editor I’m a third-generation teacher who has taught a variety of science classes in our public schools for 25 years. Currently, I’m serving as president of the Great Falls Education Association, representing over 800 educators. I’m also the mother of three incredibly productive young men, all products of the Great Falls Public Schools. I passionately believe all children deserve a quality education that prepares them for a successful future, no matter what their parents’ income level; no matter where in Montana they live. T...
Editor, The Great Northern Fair Board would like to extend a tremendous thank-you to all businesses and individuals involved in making our fair a success this year. We couldn’t have done it without you. Wade Bickford and Patrick Construction Lori Hanson with Downtown Gardens Mike, Craig and Larry Tilleman and Tilleman Motor Co. Bob Doney with Bob’s Greenhouse Dave Rhines and Schine Electric Scott Doney with Diesel Doctor Paul McCann with Bear Paw Veterinary Services Tyler Smith with Lakeside Excavation Hill County Road Dep...
Editor, Thanks to the 114 registered donors who walked through the doors of St. Jude Parish Center July 11 the Red Cross blood drive was a huge success. Only six donors were deferred and there were three first-time donors. For some reason the July blood drive is usually a success. Our goal is 86 units, so having 114 walk through the doors is wonderful. I, personally, would like to thank all of the donors who took time out of their day to donate. July is one of the months blood is most needed. The Fifth Avenue Christian...
Editor, We live on U.S. Highway 87 and instead of beautiful Montana sunsets and “big sky,” we look at rusty train cars with New York and Chicago graffiti on them. Tourism is a critical source of income for this state. Compliments of BNSF Railway, tourists are now “enjoying” roads lined with rusty rail cars. Once tracks are not being used for their intended purpose, the land should be returned to its original condition, not be used to deface this state. BNSF is no longer providing shipping to growers near, for example Big San...
Editor, I would like to thank Terry Turner and his staff for the great job they do in keeping our city pest free. After traveling to other cities, we are truly spoiled by being able to be outdoors and enjoy it without worrying about mosquitoes, etc. So thanks for a great job. Lee Kohler Havre...
Editor, Recently, with his poll numbers plummeting, and his pathway to legitimately winning the election fading, Trump suggested to his followers that there was a “Second Amendment” solution to Hillary. “If she gets to pick her judges,” he said, “nothing you can do, folks. Although the Second Amendment people — maybe there is. I don’t know.” For many on the right, owning guns is not just for personal defense but for the violent overthrow of the government if it “overreaches.” If a majority of us, say, do something hopelessl...
Editor, Thursday you highlighted the effort Bullhook employees, Friday HDN mocks the mentally ill. One step forward, 10 steps back. I was extremely disappointed when I picked up (Friday’s) paper and read the article entitled “Man arrested in bizarre parking dispute at Chamber.” The author seemed eager to sensationalize the admittedly abnormal behaviors of a man who at first blush, appears to have suffered some form of psychotic break. Yes, it caused a scene. Yes, people will want to know what happened. I can’t imagine...
Editor, Please help me thank our local law enforcement on Sept. 17 — National Tell a Police Officer Thank You Day. The initiative has been started by the Whole Truth Project and Wives Behind the Badge, an organization with a mission to promote a pro-police message every year on the third Saturday of September, just like Havre's Festival Days. Police officers risk their lives to protect and serve their communities. Chances are, at one time or another, a police officer has been there to assist you or a family member in a t...
Editor, I have been teaching in Montana for the past 24 years. I am also a parent of an elementary student and a Montana University student. As an educator here in Great Falls, I have seen a lot of changes. Having good leadership in the top positions is absolutely critical to continuing to prepare and educate our youth. Montana’s superintendent of public instruction affects me, my family, and lives of the children I teach. I’ve studied the issues and where the candidates stand. If you are a fellow educator, a parent, grandpar...
Dear editor, As a native Montanan who went to school in Bozeman, I know Montana students receive a high quality education. After moving out of state for work and experiencing schools outside of Montana, my wife and I decided to move back to Montana to raise our family. Montanans value public education, and that is why Melissa Romano, a public school teacher from Helena, is the right choice for our next Superintendent of Public Instruction. No matter where they live in Montana, regardless of their background, every child of th...
Dear editor, On Nov. 8, 2016, the electorate will cast their vote for or against I-177, banning trapping on all public lands in Montana. Public lands defined in I-177 as “all federal, county, city owned land in Montana including public lands leased to private parties.” Contained in I-177: • Persistent animal problems will be determined by Fish, Wildlife and Parks, and they will use alternative methods of animal removal, including fladry, guard dogs, range riding, temporary fencing and/or relocation of person or property in a...
Editor: The Havre Disabled American Veterans van has come to a point that it will no longer be able to operate for lack of drivers and a coordinator. As of June 30 there is only one driver for the van and that is not enough to meet the needs of local veterans and guidelines of DAV. The van needs at least three more drivers and a coordinator to continue operations. At least 50 veterans in the area have used the DAV van in the past and will have to find another means to travel to medical appointments in the future. Montana DAV...
Editor: We were at Beaver Creek Park in June for our biannual Patera reunion at the Railroad Pagers campground. We arrived a day early so we had time to hike to some of the other camp sites and take a drive through others. As former Havre-area residents we have childhood memories of picnics at Beaver Creek Park. After our 1963 marriage we started camping with our children, family and friends. Usually our first campout for the year was to Beaver Creek Park for Memorial Day weekend and ended there for Labor Day weekend. In...
