Editor: Senate Bill 298 is a bill allowing disabled hunters to use crossbows in archery season. There is adaptive equipment available but does not fit all people. SB 298 would allow disabled Montanans to spend family time in the warmer weather for many disabled people have impaired circulation, putting us at disadvantage during colder weather. I cannot hold a bow horizontally nor for any length of time. Nineteen surgeries on my back and arms makes shooting regular bow impossible. The number of Montanans who would qualify is v...
Dear Editor: Rural access to health care has never been simpler than with Medicare Advantage. With Medicare Advantage, I know that I get quality care and peace of mind. Not only do I have affordable premiums that protect my hard-working dollars, but I also have access to benefits and programs that give me the services I need from the comfort of my ranch. With Medicare Advantage, I have more assurance that I am enrolling in a responsible and quality program. I am 1 of 30 million Americans who pays an average monthly premium...
Dear editor, It has been my pleasure and joy to serve the people of Hill County as the Clack Museum and Wahkpa Chu’gn Buffalo Jump manager for the past nearly five years. From greeting visitors at the museum and buffalo jump, to giving school group tours of the buffalo jump with Kelly and Judy Jones and Bev Kologi, giving presentations in the Faber Schoolhouse (mostly in the heat during the Great Northern Fair!), writing some columns to introduce residents to the wonderful treasures in the Clack Museum’s collections and hel...
Editor, Apparently, somebody won something last week, because MEIC and other anti-coal groups are claiming a VICTORY! On Friday February 10, 2023, Donald W. Molloy, U.S. District Court Judge, Missoula, ordered that mining cease at Bull Mountains Underground Mine in the five sections of federal coal that have been leased since 2012, until a new environmental report can be written (20 months). This is not a new or future mining area. This “expansion” area has had all the state and federal approvals necessary to mine since 201...
Dear Editor: Feb. 9, 2023, the 56th Annual Hill County Spelling Bee was held at the Havre Middle School. Such an event can only happen with the help of dedicated community leaders. Crucial financial support for this event was provided by Independence Bank in the form of Chamber of Commerce gift certificates for the top three finishers: $50, $35 and $20. Medals were provided by the Hill County Superintendent of Schools office. There were 69 students (17 alternates), fourth through eighth grade, participating and each of these...
Editor, It was disappointing to read in the Feb. 3 edition of Havre Daily News of the commissioners limiting the processes for public and county officials to participate and comment on county business. Though it is understandable that some comments and interactions can be counterproductive, cutting the opportunities across the board is not an effective way to manage the problem. Had the published agenda for the commissioners Feb. 2, business meeting included an item to change public and officials opportunity to participate...
The Boy Scouts of America was founded Feb. 8, 1910, thus in 2023 we are celebrating 113 years. I would like to take this time to say thank you to all who have supported the various BSA programs over the past year. There have been many individuals, families, businesses, organizations in Havre and along the Hi-Line that have assisted this past year and without all of your support we could not survive. I would specifically like to thank First Lutheran Church, St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church and Community Alliance Church:...
I want to acknowledge that the American Legion Post #11, at our December 2022 meeting, decided to again search for our Top Fire Fighter and Peace Officer in Hill County. I took the project on and I went to the Havre Fire Department and gave them the formal document to choose their top fire fighter/emergency medical technician. I also submitted the document for Top Peace Officer to Havre Police Department, Hill County Sheriff’s Office, Montana Highwayy Patrol Chief (Hill County) and the U.S. Border Patrol commander in H...
Editor, As the community of Chinook prepares to vote on the Pool and Park Bond Initiative, I write to encourage you to support these vital facilities that have served our community for over 40 years. I applaud the progress and ongoing commitment of the many stakeholders working to rehabilitate the pool and park for our community’s benefit. They should be commended for their efforts to engage the public in the planning process and move toward a shared vision of these enriching spaces. Their work highlights the spirit of c...
Editor, Our community is blessed with so many generous people. Their hearts are never empty, they overflow with joy, their actions are kind and caring. I wish to express my deepest gratitude to all the volunteers who shared their generous hearts during the Thanksgiving holiday. May the warm and wonderful energy you all create be with you and yours throughout this holiday season. Warmest wishes. Deb Rhines Community Thanksgiving Dinner Chair...
Editor, Take a lesson from Tommy Mellott. I was very proud that at end of the Cat-Griz game that he asked for respect for the Griz bus/players when they departed Bozeman. Last year when they departed Missoula his team was shown very good sportsmanship. He made it known on national TV that he did not t want the Griz players given a bad time. Tommy mentioned that all the players on both teams put their hearts into the game and play their hardest to win all games. With Tommy’s mature attitude why then are both Montana teams f...
The North Central Montana Compassionate Friends, along with the National Compassionate Friends, is participating in the 23rd annual World Wide Candle Lighting in remembrance of those children gone too soon. The death of a child is devastating and it’s important to the family that the child always be remembered. That’s why our chapter, based in Fort Benton, will take part in this worldwide event designed to honor the memories of all children, regardless of age, who have died. The North Central Montana Chapter, along with hun...
Thank you so much for all of your support and encouragement throughout this campaign. We all hold unique ideas and ways of thinking, but this campaign showed that, no matter what walk of life anyone comes from, we all can work together for the common good and achieve any goal we set out to do. Most importantly, this campaign was conducted respectfully. Maliciousness and hostility are not required to make positive change, and people saw and embraced that. For the first time in decades, maybe ever, many people stepped out of...
Editor, As president of the Friends of Music Booster Club for the music department of Havre Public Schools, I had the absolute pleasure to work with Havre Superintendent Craig Mueller. Not only did he support the arts within the school district, but he personally put himself out in front of the School Board and the entire surrounding community to bring attention to these unbelievably talented groups of kids. When we as parents thought we were defeated, he stepped in and made sure the Havre High Marching Band went to...

Editor, In mid-August, I experienced a very traumatic and serious accident in my own backyard. I fractured most of my ribs an the left side and my left arm. I was transported immediately by ambulance to Northern Montana Hospital. I was treaded by emergency room, X-ray lab and intensive care unit for eight days, medical surgery for nine days, physical therapy and rehabilitation. These medical teams were all professional, efficient and provided excellent care. I am a registered nurse, so I feel very qualified to make this...
Dear Editor, This letter goes out to the members of the Bear Paw Credit Union. It pertains to the proposed merger with Altana Federal Credit Union. I am urging all members to vote no on the merger until all facts can be gathered. I received a letter from the president of the board of directors asking for our vote on this issue. Very little information about the tentative merger was mentioned, and they asked that we submit our ballots by 4 p.m. on Dec. 1, 2022. A special meeting will be held that same day at 5 p.m. to discuss...
Editor, The Montana Constitution is an admirable work, and I marvel at it because, being from Colorado, not even our state constitution can compare to it. Recently, “the right to know” in the Montana Constitution has caught my eye. I want to know what my legislators are doing and how their choices behind closed doors will impact my life. How it will affect my neighbor’s life, my friend’s life, heyy ... maybe even my dog’s life. I want to be in the know, and I want to be in a room where things happen metaphorically. If these...
Editor This year, Montanan’s are facing the most critical general election in recent history with results that will have significant impacts on future generations. We Montana citizens, no matter the party affiliation, have certain, unimpeachable duties which must be performed intelligently and with empathy. We are instructed in Isaiah Chapter 1 Verse 17: “Learn to do good, make justice your aim; redress the wronged, hear the orphan’s plea, defend the widow.” Learn to do good, make justice your aim. We are urged by these w...
Editor, As we are falling into the full swing of autumn, hunters around the state are gearing up for the opening of deer and elk season. Before the season opens on Oct. 22, it’s a great time to celebrate the protections that Montana’s constitution provides for hunters. Article 10, Section Seven of the Constitution protects Montanan Harvest Heritage. This section holds that hunting, fishing and harvesting wildlife is a way of life in Montana. Harvesting wildlife is something that’s always been done here, and the const...
Editor, For the last 50 years, Montana’s constitution has protected some of the most basic and widely undisputed rights of Montanans. Here we have the right to live our lives without the government dictating how we should go about doing so and to thrive on our land. Few states feel the need to protect the privacy of their citizens, but Montana is an exception. Through the decades, Montanans have benefited countless times from Article II, Section X of our constitution, with protections for online data, health care d...
Editor, I want to clear up a couple things about a park board meeting, last one Sept. 12. I have been attending most park board meetings for 14-plus-years. I give reports on cabin owner items and what our group has been up to. We are a group, not an association. I give my ideas or suggestions as a taxpayer. When discussion about fixing the old lodge came up I stated instead of putting a lot of money in that building why not build a new one that will last many years and not be a bandage or a temp fix. I want a new building...
Editor, What do you picture when you think of Montana? Is it the huge swaths of hikeable nature? Our varied individual liberties? The nation’s best fishing and hunting? Or is it privacy from the chaos and prying of more populated states like California? Fifty years ago, Montanans decided that these things were important enough to our culture to be enshrined as rights within the state Constitution. The product was the creation of the greatest constitution in the nation; one chock-full of rights that average Montanans see the f...
Editor, The Montana Constitution is in peril and its consequential protections towards citizens are at risk. My name is Liam Edwards and I am an intern at the Montana Public Interest Research Group. The current Montana Constitution has offered protections for us for over 50 years. It guarantees our right to privacy, right to a clean and healthful environment, and the right to oversee government proceedings. These rights are important because they guarantee public land and water access. Public access to land and water means a...
