Editor, I recently came across a Letter to the Editor claiming that Ryan Zinke is not suitable to serve in Congress. As a 25-year Montanan who has personally seen Zinke at work, I would like to argue just the opposite and here’s why: Ryan Zinke stays true to his word and does not waiver on the issues he is fighting for--even when that means straying from his own party. A U.S. Navy SEAL himself, Zinke understands America’s duty to assist our allies when necessary if it means keeping the homeland safe and secure. He voted to st...
Editor, I feel compelled to write this letter to point out a few facts and perhaps raise a question or two. I have done a fair amount of business with Wells Fargo in recent years, the Wells Fargo Bank in Big Sandy, the Wells Fargo Investors Offices in Great Falls. I have found the Wells Fargo personnel in this area honorable and pleasurable with which to work. But I received a pamphlet from Wells Fargo recently pertaining to the upcoming election, which I interpreted as supporting the candidacy of Hillary Clinton. Clinton...
Editor, Oct. 22 is International Stuttering Awareness Day. Did you know that 70 million people worldwide stutter — more than the population of France? For nearly 70 years, the Stuttering Foundation has offered free information about stuttering and its treatment. To mark this year’s awareness day, we’ve compiled information for all ages from speech-language pathologists around the world who specialize in the treatment of stuttering. This invaluable info can be found at www.StutteringHelp.org. We hope to reach everyone with...
Editor, The Hill County commissioners have put a 10 mill levy on the ballot. This levy is to be used on infrastructure and technology updates in the county. The county foresees many upgrade needs to the courthouse, detention center and the annex in the near future. This is the first levy request since 1986 when I-105 was voted in. The commission felt that the need and the timing is right for this request. The jail bond levy will make its final payment on June 2017. That levy is also 10 mills. That jail bond will be paid off...
Editor, Parents across Montana applaud the recent Western Attorneys General report regarding transferring ownership of our public lands to state or private entities. The report found that there is no legal means to “transfer” our federal public lands to state control. We thank Montana Attorney General Tim Fox for his thoughtful support of this report. On the heels of this report — as parents raising families and paying taxes in Montana — we are concerned with the vital fact that states, and state taxpayers, simply aren’t...
Editor I also am impressed with Jacob Bachmeier. He is a student at Montana State University-Northern but he has a plan on how he can finish school and still represent us. He is polite, intelligent and refreshing. He is a bright spot in this dismal election. He tells you why he is the best candidate, not why the opponent is a bad candidate. I appreciate that. Good luck Mr. Bachmeier. You have my support. Lita Thisselle Havre...
Editor, Congressman Ryan Zinke we appreciate your military service. Largely because of that service, we Montanans hired you to represent us in Washington. We certainly believe in giving a vet a shot. We had hoped that a spirit of patriotism would have molded your service in the U.S. House. You were sent there to get positive things done. Now it’s time for your performance evaluation. What legislation have you sponsored and shepherded through the legislature that has become law and had a positive impact on us? I think we know...
Editor, As the mother of two children who thrived in Montana public schools, I know how important education is to our children’s future. In my work with teachers and public employees, I’ve been fortunate to know many of the people running for statewide office in Montana. I am impressed with Melissa Romano, who is running for Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction. Melissa is a classroom teacher who loves her students and the teaching profession. She is an outstanding, master teacher. Denise Juneau, our current sup...
Editor, Thank you for your support of the Third Annual Family Violence Stops Here Walk for Awareness: FiveHeads, Gary & Leo’s Fresh Foods, Northern Montana Healthcare, Havre Police Department, Culligan, Havre Daily News, The wonderful participants. See you again next year. The Hill County Health Department and District IV HRDC Domestic Violence Program...
Editor, The election season is a sad affair. We would be tempted to give up on it altogether if it were not for one bright spot — and that is Democrat Jacob Bachmeier who is running for House District 28. Mr. Bachmeier is an energetic, optimistic young man who is destined to make his mark on Montana politics. Jacob has lived here in Havre all of his life. He campaigns with the positive energy of one who embraces public service and hard work. Mr. Bachmeier is committed to protecting Montana’s outdoor spaces, to creating new...
I’m a Great Falls resident and member of the Congregation of Humility of Mary. Years ago, I became foster mother to 5—year—old Lissie, a child born with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. FASD effects brain development in utero resulting in lowered IQ and diminished brain function. Lifetime costs for this disorder are reported to be $1.4 million. Love, personal care and nurturing allowed Lissie to progress beyond expectation. Few FASD children are as fortunate. Permanent brain damage has caused lifelong challenges desper...
Editor, When we go to the polls, how well do we really know those who are candidates for office? Do we know them or do we just know about them? Have we checked their positions on various issues? Better yet, do they have a voting record we can look at? Also, what is their life experience? What part has education played a role, whether it be a college degree or the years spent serving others? How has their workplace been part of their training so that they might be able to relate to their constituents? Stephanie Hess has a...
Editor My vote for Montana’s only U.S. representative stands firmly with Denise Juneau. I believe that government’s primary responsibility is to protect the common — the public’s domain and rights. Included in the common are public land, quality education and equal opportunity. Public lands: Both candidates claim that they want to keep public lands public. However, the Republican Party supports land transfer in both state and national platforms, and Zinke has voted to transfer the management of our national forests to poli...
Editor, On Sept. 30, the University of Montana has recently become the very first university in the nation to incorporate battery-powered buses into their transportation system, and it was a huge step toward their goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2020. These zero-emission buses are paving the way for environmental stewardship within the university system; not only do these buses provide clean transportation, but people are becoming aware of the impacts humans have on the environment. The need for public transportation in...
Editor, The initiative I-177 banning trapping on public land is just a start on what is to come. This initiative is backed by anti-hunting/fishing groups of individuals who in the end want all hunting, trapping and fishing banned. Should a bill like this ever be passed, our state would see an increase in wildlife diseases, overpopulation and needless death. I enjoy our Beaver Creek county park very much. Should I-177 pass, we would see an increase in beaver destruction on our beautiful trees and more dams built by these roden...
Editor, As a kid, growing up in Laurel, Montana, I remember driving by the CHS Refinery. Often the smoke would blanket the highway and it would be difficult for one to see cleary. Not to mention the smell was horrid. The refinery was responsible for a large portion of air pollution in Yellowstone County, and it faced harsh criticism from environmentalists. Every Laurelite knew that it was impossible to even think about shutting down the refinery. It was and still is the largest source of tax revenue in the county. It was the...
Editor, My name is Jerrica Friedt, and I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis when I was 17 years old. Now I am 26 and a mother of two, and I rely on medical cannabis to alleviate my symptoms and to help me make it through each day with this debilitating illness. My 2007 diagnosis marked the beginning of a long battle with prescription drugs and treatments that disagreed with my body and left me in serious pain. Daily injections of Copaxone resulted in a severe allergic reaction, then daily injections of Betaseron left me...
Editor, I would hope that the people vote wisely for once in their lives and vote for those who are not currently in office. I also hope they do not vote for anyone else who was in the Rocky Boy tribal council previously. We do not need the same old replay of the past which nearly destroyed this reservation. I have decided not to run this time around and not because I didn’t have the money to file but because someone must do what I do. When I find that someone who will replace me on the outside, looking in, then I will c...
Editor As A. Martin wrote, “If we would know the political and moral condition of a state, we must ask what rank women are in it, their influence embrues the whole of life.” When voting, I look for sanity, sound thinking, sincerity, and political experience. Frank McLain Havre...
Editor, This letter is addressing I-177. Please consider voting for this Initiative. I feel the concerns I’m sharing with you are extremely important to the reputation of our great state of Montana. Trapping with the use of steel–jaw leg hold traps is an ancient barbaric act that is considered recreational or commercial where the animal — many times not even the target animal — is caught and killed so that trappers can rip off the animal’s fur and sell it to the fur fashion industry. With the exception of wolf trapping,...
Dear Editor, I find it somewhat ironic that Kyle Austin calls the City of Havre greedy when he wants to start a business with city water and sewer but does not want to pay city taxes. Who might be the greedy one here? Perhaps he does not realize that Montana statutes allow for the city to annex businesses that are receiving city services. All the property owners receiving city water and sewer within the city limits pay city taxes. Is it really right that your neighbor across the street is receiving city water and sewer and is...
Editor, My lifetime as a Montanan leaves me a special perspective on fur trapping and the role it played in the history of Montana and our nation. As a young person in the 1930s and 1940s, I knew a few of the remaining mountain men who traveled the back country wilderness in pursuit of fur. Their lives were filled, as were those of their immediate predecessors, with mystic reflections of the early-day mountain men that they followed. Trapping was an important part of the lives of these people who settled and also explored so...
Editor, Trapper Fran Buell’s letter wildly misconstrues Montana Trap-Free Public Lands I-177. If a badger digs holes in agricultural fields on public lands, damaging a crop and endangering the safety of the tractor driver, and someone actually wants to put a trap in their field, they can call Fish, Wildlife and Parks for a permit to trap that badger under I-177. I-177 allows trapping to protect property as well for safety. There is no requirement for FWP to come to the site, or to spend 30 days trying all nonlethal methods of...
Dear Editor, I would like to share the good news and the good deeds that transpired this summer by Van Orsdel United Methodist Church’s SOS Committee (Save Our Souls). VOUMC SOS Committee kicked off a third summer with their Back Pack Program. The program helps to feed Havre’s hungry youth, from preschool age through 12th grade during the summer months. Bags of food the size of a back pack are discreetly distributed to local youth at the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line or Lincoln-McKinley Primary School on Fridays before kid...
Editor, Again, the City of Havre is proposing to annex business’s and land extending west along U.S. Highway 2 including but not limited to; The Holiday Village Mall, Hill Co. Electric, Northwestern energy, Havre Ford, and the AmericInn. Currently these business’s reside in the county, pay county taxes and pay for all the services they receive. Despite huge resistance and expensive litigation, the greedy City of Havre continues to attempt annexing this area into the city limits. If the annexation is approved, this will aff...
