  • Oil and gas board should approve notification

    Updated Dec 8, 2016

Editor, I live on our family ranch 12 miles south of Big Timber on the Boulder River. In 2008 the state of Montana leased the river bed, only 420 ft. north of our home for oil and gas development. Under current law, we would not have received any notification of any development that was about to occur. Thankfully, that could change. In a few days, Wednesday, Dec. 14. The Montana Board of Oil and Gas Conservation is slated to vote on a drilling the notification rule at their regular meeting that day. If approved, this rule...

Editor, To all bereaved parents, grandparents, siblings, and those who support them: The North Central Montana Compassionate Friends, along with the National Compassionate Friends, is participating in the 20th annual World Wide Candle lighting in remembrance of those children gone too soon. The death of a child is devastating and it’s important to the family that the child always be remembered. That’s why our chapter, based in Fort Benton, will take part in this worldwide event designed to honor the memories of all chi...

  • Thank you on Goldhahn fundraiser

    Updated Dec 6, 2016

Editor, A huge thank-you to all of the people who helped with and/or supported the fundraiser for Lauryn Goldhahn Nov. 20. For those of you who planned, organized, set-up, cooked, served, donated items, purchased items, shared lunch with us, visited with us, worked the auction, and helped with the many, varied tasks that needed to be completed, we cannot possibly thank-you enough. We appreciate all of the love and support that we have received during this very difficult time in our lives. Thank-you all so much. Pat, Windie...

  • Thanks for Cat/Griz food drive donations

    Updated Nov 30, 2016

Editor, On behalf of Wipfli LLP, we would like to say thank you for all that you did to make our Cat/Griz food drive a tremendous success. The outpouring of public support was phenomenal. In a short period of time, we were able to raise 1,278.8 pounds of nonperishable food items and hygiene products and $400. These donations were divided between the Havre High School Food Pantry, the Feed My Sheep Soup Kitchen and the Havre Food Bank. Although the Griz lost the Brawl of the Wild in Missoula they won the food drive bringing...

  • Equal Voice would fix electoral college criticism

    Updated Nov 17, 2016

The 2016 presidential election surprised many — some are disappointed, some are jubilant. Electoral College criticism is the new national sentiment. However, the Founding Fathers were not terribly amiss. So why did Hillary win a majority of popular votes and Trump seem to steal the election? The culprit is the all-or-nothing approach we use when tallying popular votes and converting them into Electoral Votes. The Electoral College does not need to be replaced. Equal Voice Voting offers the best of solutions without r...

  • Officer response on feral cat lacking

    Updated Nov 15, 2016

Editor, I just wanted to let the public know how the police department handles abandoned animals. Our neighbor moved out of town this summer and her cat was left behind. The cat has been trying to find food and shelter for the entire summer and now we are coming into winter. I have two cats and have cat doors into our garage and then into the house. This animal has been coming into my house and bothering my cats, eating their food and making itself at home. I was able to obtain a live trap and trap the cat. When I called the...

  • Help honor veterans by volunteering to drive

    Updated Nov 11, 2016

Friday, Nov. 11 is Veterans Day. In November 1919, President Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations.” Many commu...

  • Hats off to dancing stars, and remember to put up a light for veterans

    Updated Nov 10, 2016

Editor, Hats off to those who organized and participated in the Dancing with the Havre Stars, Havre style! It was an enjoyable evening. And don’t forget to put on a green light honoring our United States of America veterans — yesterday, today and always! Carol Heggen Kremlin...

  • Hess votes to not help people

    Updated Nov 4, 2016

Editor, State Rep. Stephanie Hess, a Havre Republican who is a member of the House Human Services Committee, voted in the last legislative session to kill Gov. Steve Bullock’s plan to expand Medicaid to provide health insurance to 70,000 low-income Montanans. When another Medicaid expansion bill, proposed by Sen. Ed Buttrey, a Great Falls Republican, came up for a vote, she voted no again. Fortunately enough Democrats and Republicans voted for that bill, and it passed and was signed into law. How can anyone be a social w...

  • Vote yes on I-181 for patient care research

    Updated Nov 4, 2016

Editor Montana scientists need a stable, reliable, funding source to develop leading Centers of Excellence that move basic research to patient care. That’s why on Nov. 8, we must vote Yes on I- 181, a bond initiative to fund biomedical research in Montana. Importantly, I-181 is a bond issue, not a tax. The program’s financing structure actually protects taxpayers, making a long-term investment in healthcare and medicine, so current taxpayers do not have to shoulder the costs of medical and scientific research that will benefi...

  • Vote for Hess in HD 28

    Updated Nov 4, 2016

Editor, It was noted the other day in a letter to the editor that Stephanie Hess is a nice person, but we should vote for someone else. It seems to me that we would want people of good character in public office. Someone who refuses to campaign negatively, listens to her constituents and thoughtfully considers the issues. Stephanie Hess has the qualities I want in a public servant. She has over 40 years of life experience and over 20 years of work experience. Stephanie is smart, kind and loves this town. Vote Stephanie Hess...

  • Your destiny is never in your comfort zone

    Updated Nov 4, 2016

Editor, Step out and do something for yourself and our people. American Indian reservations contribute just under one billion dollars per year to the economy of the state of Montana. I want to keep a large portion of that money home on the reservations by creating our own businesses. When those businesses then buy from each other and turn that dollar over several times in our communities, this is true economic development and independent tribal sovereignty. What is the one small or big business dream you always wanted to...

  • Jacob Bachmeier is the best candidate for HD 28

    Updated Nov 4, 2016

Editor, Last week, I received a political mailer that caught my eye. On the front, a stock photo of a 20-something sitting in a dark basement, holding a videogame controller, sullen face illuminated only by a television. On the back, a grotesquely distorted picture of Jacob Bachmeier, and some key phrases designed to scare older folks away from voting for a Millennial. But if Havre, Montana, and the United States are to prosper, we need the next generation of citizens to start stepping up and taking responsibility in our civi...

    Updated Nov 3, 2016

Editor, Hello Havre! Red Ribbon Week 2016 was a huge success thanks to you! We should be genuinely proud of our community for its efforts to promote a Drug-Free neighborhood. McGruff was quite impressed and had a blast visiting you all at school. The schools participated in creative themes all week with much enthusiasm; making our students excited for a bright, healthy future. Our college promoted sober life styles at their athletic events, public facilities sponsored special adventures, an entertaining and educational radio...

  • Vote Bachmeier for HD 28

    Updated Nov 3, 2016

Editor, This election the voters in HD 28 have a chance to really make a difference and that is by voting for Jacob D. Bachmeier. In my opinion, it has nothing to do with which party he represents, but the ideals he represents and the vision that he sees for Havre. Then you throw in the exuberance, energy and work ethic that Jacob possesses and you have someone that will represent Havre and the people, like few ever have. I have witnessed firsthand his determination. I have seen him hitting the pavement and knocking on doors...

  • Hess is who I want representing me

    Updated Nov 3, 2016

Editor, When I first met Stephanie Hess, she was running a group home for disabled adults. She was good at her job as evidenced by the affection her clients had for her. She was shy and quiet. At the time, I would not have imagined that 15 years later she would be standing on the floor of the Montana House of Representatives making me proud that I know her. Stephanie Hess is the kind of public servant I want representing me. She does not just talk about ideals, she lives them. She is intelligent, a good listener and a...

  • Hess for House

    Updated Nov 2, 2016

Editor, It was my pleasure to serve with Rep. Stephanie Hess in the 2015 Legislative Session. Stephanie’s integrity, thoughtfulness, and knowledge served her well as your representative. Stephanie Hess is fearless in the fight to protect the rights of the people of House District 28 and all of Montana. Stephanie works hard to preserve your freedoms in Helena. I look forward to serving with her again in the 2017 Legislative Session. Please vote Hess for House in November. Rep. Ryan Osmundson, R-Buffalo Vice chair, House A...

Dear Editor, The fourth-grade at Aviston Elementary, located in southern Illinois, is learning about the United States and the different environments, climates, resources and highlights found in each region. The kids in the class think it would be fun to receive postcards, souvenirs, resources or any information about our great country from each of the 50 states. We hope that people who read this letter will be interested in mailing our class items pertaining to their state. Our address: 4th Grade @ Aviston Elementary 350 Sou...

  • Make a difference: Vote

    Updated Nov 2, 2016

Editor, Some time ago, I was challenged to do something positive that might make a worthwhile difference for our upcoming 2016 elections. Thus, this letter was produced. So be encouraged. Setting aside all the hype, opinions, dogma and personalities involved in an election year, stay focused on values, truth and facts. With the choices set before us, ask yourself a brutally honest question: Who and what does our America need the most to remain “one nation under God”? I once heard it said, “If we want to remain free, it’s...

  • Vote no to I-182

    Updated Nov 2, 2016

Editor, Proponents of I-182 are trying very hard to make you believe that their initiative is a responsible and accountable solution to the medical marijuana debacle that Montana had to endure since 2004. I-182 is neither responsible nor accountable. While medical marijuana may be a viable medical solution for people with serious illnesses, providing marijuana from a corner shop by a provider who has no medical degree is neither practical, safe, nor good medicine. It didn’t work the first time it was implemented, and it w...

  • Hess best for HD 28

    Updated Nov 2, 2016

Editor, As a United States veteran of the armed forces, Rep. Stephanie Hess has my vote on Election Day. Hess understands that every citizen has a role to play in protecting America and keeping her great. While soldiers and sailors and airmen defend the nation and fight our battles abroad, those of us at home have a duty to work hard, build the economy, educate our children, keep our families together, work together with law enforcement to keep our communities safe and diligently guard our freedoms. I am proud to have served...

  • Consider how you can reduce waste on America Recycles Day

    Updated Nov 1, 2016

Nov. 15 is America Recycles Day — a nationally recognized day intended to promote community recycling efforts and help educate Americans about recycling. Now, as far as days go, America Recycles Day may not have the gravitas of a Columbus Day, or that unique blend of optimism coupled with despair that comes with a Valentine’s Day, or even the anticipation of your average Friday. But what makes America Recycles Day special is its grassroots approach to empowering people and organizations who are passionate about rec...

  • Ads against I-181 misleading

    Updated Nov 1, 2016

Editor, Two weeks before the election, the MEA-MFT’s national organization dumped $528,000 into inaccurate and misleading ads against I-181, the Montana Biomedical Research Fund. This legislation could aid virtually every Montana family, covering everything from Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, MS and strokes to diabetes, PTSD, depression, autism and addictions. One would hope that $528,000 at the last minute can’t dupe Montanans into voting against their own best interests. Montanans need to speak, and the initiative process is our...

  • Vote for Hess on her record

    Updated Nov 1, 2016

Editor, It’s about time to set the record straight on Rep. Stephanie Hess’ business record. Even though the local Havre Area Chamber of Commerce won’t tell any of the businesses in town, the state Chamber of Commerce will. Stephanie Hess got a 94 percent rating with the Montana Chamber for her votes to support small business. The highest-rated democrat in the entire House of Representatives got a 63 percent. And Gov. Steve Bullock got a whopping 54 percent. This is just a fact. Hess’ young opponent says he will be pro-bus...
