To all of you who donated toward the East Fork Fire Disaster Fund, your thoughts and hearts were of good intention and greatly appreciated, but those who were burned out, whether partially or totally, as far as I know at this time have not seen a nickel of it. I write to let you know we appreciate your thoughts, but they may all of have been in vain, to be or will be squandered, in regards to your intentions. Sincerely, David Molitor Bear Paw Mountains rancher...
Editor, The university in our town does not have a full-time professor of physics, philosophy, foreign language, women’s studies, comparative religion or music. Less than 40 percent of the budget of Montana State University-Northern is spent on instruction, and more than half of the full-time employees of the university do not teach a single class. For this coming semester, there are over 70 closed classes and lab sections. So what is the response of the university’s leadership to this crisis? Build a football stadium. Foo...
Dear Editor, As executive director of the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce, I would like to thank, once again, the business community in Havre. You have made the 2017 Tree Lighting in the Town Square and the Santa Run a great success. The turnout of residents was larger than ever and the prizes were generous. The four Super Certificate gift prizes, worth more than $2,000, were made possible by 90 area businesses that donated goods, gift cards and Chamber gift certificates. The four children’s giveaways, coordinated by the C...
Editor, You’ve probably read that President Trump has slashed the size of the Bears Ears National Monument by 85 percent, and has shrunk the Grand Staircase-Escalante monument to half its size. Conservation groups and Native American tribes are filing suit to stop this unprecedented attack on public lands. The outcome of this is critically important to the people of north-central Montana. If Trump and his Interior secretary, Ryan Zinke, succeed, no national monument will be safe from presidential tampering, including our o...
Dear President Donald Trump: This letter is written to express the great dissatisfaction and disappointment in your recent comments at the Honoring Ceremony for the Native American Code Talkers. Your comments referring to a U.S. senator as “Pocahontas” were totally inappropriate and insensitive to all Native Americans, not just to the Code Talkers that you addressed. Your timing in making such comments for personal satisfaction and opportunity also shows an insensitivity to the purpose of the meeting and a blatant dis...
Editor, I would like to take this time of thankfulness to express my thanks to the volunteers that help out with the blood draw held at St. Jude’s every other month. They are the Lions Club, Jaycees, Eagles, Knight of Columbus, Fifth Avenue Christian Church, NorthWestern Energy, Wells Fargo Bank, Stockman Bank, Havre Rotary, Independence Bank, Steve Mariani Insurance & Financial, First Lutheran Women, Methodist Women, TOPS 0480 and Messiah Lutheran Women. Also a special thanks to St. Jude’s for the use of their fel...
Editor, With a final deadline coming very soon and a final payment disbursement of the remaining Pembima Monies, I hope it goes to The People and not stolen like our monies were by the corrupt tribal council here (at Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation) on the Cobell Pay out. We got $300 from an allocated $1,492 per capita. From that money, they gave themselves a $30,000 incentive raise. The mere fact that three councilmen refused taking it shows that it was immoral and not right or they would have taken it themselves. The t...
The Hill County Ambulance recently held a class to train new EMTs and we would like to publicly thank Triangle Communications and Town Pump for the grant money that helped fund this class. Thank you to High Country Beverages for the Coke products they provided. Thank you to Stan and Willy Langel for providing housing for the teachers who came from Bozeman to lead the class. Thanks to North Star Schools for the use of their facility. All the room made teaching the class much easier. Thank you Denise Strissel for all your hard...
Editor, Because of recent court decisions, beef producers here won’t have a say in how checkoff dollars are spent in Montana. Therefore, beef producers need to sign a consent form today or by Jan. 15 to keep your promotion dollars at work right here in Montana. For information and a producer request to retain beef checkoff assessment forms, call the Montana Beef Council at 406-656-3336 or visit http://www.montanabeefcouncil.org online. Beef checkoff dollars are important for beef education and promotion projects in our l...
Editor: We want to express our heartfelt appreciation for the care and compassion the fifth floor nurses and CNAs provided for our loved one Ken Campbell. In such a difficult time, they were there to support us and provide whatever we needed. Words cannot express what that meant to our family. The Ken Campbell Family Rick and Ruth Ervin...
Dear Editor: Every fall, United Way of Hill County holds its annual campaign to raise money for its funded partners. Those funded partners are local nonprofit, service organizations that provide services, food, shelter, education, healthcare, and more to people in need. The organizations are chosen through an interview and scoring process. They are held accountable to report back on how they utilize the funding they receive from United Way and they must reapply each year. In turn, they ask for a specific amount of money and...
Editor, Wow! We attended “Tarzan” Saturday night at Havre High School with hopes of being entertained for a few hours — but what we experienced was way beyond what we would expect from a high school production. The set itself was extraordinary — with full rain forest effects. The entire cast was incredible, including the costumes, and the orchestra. The singing and acting created a sense of being at a professional performance - not a high school production. Tarzan and the apes were swinging across the stage on vines in the...
Throughout all of human history there has never been a greater country than the United States. The founding of our nation was built on one simple idea; that rights come from God. That no individual or assembly of individuals can take these rights away and that we, as people, have the duty and the obligation to fight to protect these rights. This seemingly simple, yet profound idea changed the world. As a country we have fought to uphold these rights for everyone around the globe. We have buried generations of our nation’s b...
Editor, I have always perceived the Montana Tech football team as one of integrity. Well, that went out the window with the disgraceful rout of Montana State University-Northern. The goal of wining at all costs and setting school and national records came at the hands of humiliating a football team, coaching staff and community. The humiliation of this football program will live long past the tenure of this coaching staff and players. Your football program, from the athletic director to the coaching staff to the players, owe...
Editor, Mental Health America of Montana is recruiting volunteers who want to be trained to be a Recovery Line Responder. Recovery — Warm Line — “Responders” listen and provide resources to Montanans, as well as other states struggling with isolation, anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse and other social issues by offering empathic support over the phone. Responders are people who have experience with a mental health diagnosis and/or a family member with a diagnosis. Since 2008, volunteers on Montana Recovery — Warm Line — ha...
Editor, Health insurance companies are raising rates and dropping coverage all across Montana, and politicians are to blame. Business owners know they must understand their core business to stay profitable. Likewise, politicians who don’t understand insurance are mishandling the insurance industry as they burden insurance companies with ridiculous rules that increase costs without fixing the deeper problems. The dirty secret is that keeping Obamacare or getting rid of it are both terrible options. The truth is that the i...
Editor, My family and I would like to thank everyone who was involved in the benefit for North Star student Aubrey Welch. The benefit committee put so much effort, time, and love into organizing the fundraiser and took care of every possible detail. The food was fantastic, there were so many amazing donations for the silent auction and an overwhelming turn out of people. The benefit raised twice the goal the committee had set. The prayer warriors on the committee must have been working overtime! I know without a doubt that...
City of Havre, You have said, per Havre Daily News’ last Monday’s article, you are going to spend $131,000 for cleanup of storm damage and snow removal. Wouldn’t that money be better spent, buying snow plows for our city trucks and buying our own bucket truck? Another storm will always hit our town, wouldn’t it be better to be prepared? Instead of always looking to raise our property taxes? I wish we could be smarter with the tax payers money and not always looking for more. Shelley Weivoda Havre...
Editor, As commissioner of securities and insurance, the Montana state auditor helps supervise a regulatory system that is working hard to prevent Montana’s businesses from raising equity financing from the people. By shutting down business fundraising, the people are forced to get toxic loans from the Wall Street banking cartel. This is Montana’s No. 1 economic problem. The Auditor’s office and the feds have made raising equity so complicated that only 31 companies statewide have applied for equity with the Audit...
Editor, One reason Rocky Boy is millions and millions of dollars in unaccountable accounts goes to problems like this. I always pay my water bill. I got a receipt for this month and was billed “again” a few days later. I smiled, knowing someone was going to catch it for this, being I am he American Indian Movement leader here in Lil Russia, aka the Rocky Boy’s Indian Reservation. When I asked how such a thing can happen, they told me “we have no permenant bookkeeper.” I said, “What, no permanent bookkeeper for accounts pa...
Editor I'll make this short and sweet. I was reading the Havre Daily and every time a mill levy comes up ... let's tax the property owners more! Not! I, for one, am tired of having to foot the bill for everything. It's time they find a way to tax everyone, not just the homeowners. Who's with me? Thank you, Susie Schend Havre...
Dear Editor, I saw on Facebook a post “If Jesus was a Republican” and the things He was doing shocked me. For one point most people I know do not tie their faith to any political alliance. If a person does, maybe they should re-evaluate their own Christian beliefs or their political loyalty. How I feel about the political arena has nothing to do with my beliefs, my faith on Jesus Christ, my acceptance of others, or anything else. Whom I love and care for and how I care for them is strictly between my Savior and me. If a per...
Living costs, textbooks, tuition — these things all add up quickly as college students who are looking to build a strong future for ourselves so that we can contribute back to the Montana we love. At a time when we are already dealing with recent increases to our tuition costs, proposed state budget cuts will not only pinch our pocketbooks even further but also could prevent opportunities for students like us to receive a higher education. If the Legislature is not willing to work with Gov. Bullock to find a more responsible...
Editor, I am writing on behalf of my friend, mentor and City Council candidate Lindsey Ratliff. I first met Mrs. Lindsey Ratliff my sophomore year of high school as my history teacher. Although it was her first year as a teacher, with her undying determination and commitment to her students, Ms. Ratliff was more than efficient in education, she was inspirational. Lindsey has also proven to have excellent management and leadership abilities. My junior year, she persuaded me to attend the Close Up trip to Washington, D.C. Not...
Editor, The kindness and friendliness of Havre were demonstrated after the recent storm, as we were helped in the cleanup by several individuals and groups. Among them were friends and neighbors and both the LDS youth group and the LDS volunteer service group. We couldn’t have done much without their help. Not only were they efficient in this tiring work, but cheerful and friendly. Thank you. Lloyd and Margaret Stallkamp Havre...
