Editor, Some of you may not have had the opportunity to visit Butte, Anaconda, Libby, Great Falls and other communities impacted by industry in Montana’s past. With the elimination of the EPA promised by Washington, D.C., in the name of job creation, I have to wonder what effect this might have on this “last, best place” we call home. Montana’s streams, rives, forests, air, land — all are critical to the primary industries we hold dear. Ranching, farming and recreation are part of our heritage. Extraction industrie...
Editor Do you know of anyone who has started a school, equipped those students with tech skills, over 500, who average out an $85,000 yearly income in Montana? That’s Greg Gianforte. He’s an engineer. An engineer mindset looks at a problem in several ways, and then comes up with solutions. His desire is to maintain a close relationship with us, know our problems, and fight for us. He’s no outsider. He and Susan raised their four children here and love our way of life. Greg’s comment regarding sales tax happened in 2002, 1...
Editor An open letter to Greg Gianforte: Mr. Gianforte, FYI Montana is not for sale. I just finished watching the debate on MTN tonight. You continue to mouth the same phony, dishonest lines that Donald Trump used to get elected that are turning out to be lies. You’ve been running nonstop television ads since the beginning of February. You are trying to pass yourself off as just a regular kind of guy, but we in Montana are not going to be fooled by a New Jersey billionaire who thinks he can buy a congressional seat. It d...
Editor, My husband and I are life-long residents of Montana. We are 66 years old and have a grandchild in public school. We care about Affordable Health Care, grandfathered water rights, a clean environment, job opportunites, the Second Amendment and access to public lands. We are voting for Rob Quist for House of Representatives. He will be a voice for all Montanans in the U.S. Congress and will come back to Montana to discuss the issues face to face with residents. Vote on May 25, 2017. Paul and Ellen Gayle Clifford Three...
Dear Editor: I am scratching my head as to how the Democrat Party could nominate someone as unqualified as Rob Quist as their candidate for Congress. I would think Democrat Party stalwarts would be embarrassed to select for their candidate someone who has spent the past couple of decades defaulting on debts he owes, supporting national gun control, promoting the disaster called “ObamaCare,” and advocating government growth pushing America further in debt. Mr. Quist may be a great guy to have a beer or a joint with, but has no...
Editor: The Environmental Protection Agency is asking for public comments “on regulations that may be appropriate for repeal, replacement, or modification.” That is a misguided effort if there ever was one. With pipelines leaking, tires burning, polluted waste being dumped into wetlands, plastics floating in our waters, fracking causing earthquakes, obsolete coal-fired plants releasing pollution into the air, pollution increasing carbon in the atmosphere, and global temperatures rising, the EPA’s resources should be direc...
I thought that the Republican Party was big on saving tax dollars and against rigged elections. Well, talk is cheap. Look what happened last week in the Motnana Legislature. A majority of Republicans voted against the measure to allow an all-mail ballot for the upcoming May 25 special election. This will cause Montanans to have to spend over $700,000 in order to conduct the special election. The Republican Party leaders were afraid that if there was an all-mail ballot election, they would lose the U.S. House seat for Montana...
My nephew, Chris Krager, the director of a homeless shelter in Kalispell and a musician who has played bass for Rob Quist over the span of the last 22 years, told us, “Having played music and traveled Montana over the years with Rob Quist, I have had the privilege of seeing Rob’s undying love for Montana and its people. Rob has a passion for this state and cares deeply that the right thing is done to progress issues that we all care about.” Chris went on to say that “when a neighbor in Montana needs help, it is frequen...
Editor, The biggest issue of the Montana special election is the Montana mail-in ballot. Risking defeat by doing the right thing is the very definition of courageous. And in this case what’s right was profoundly clear, unequivocal and laid squarely in the hands of one Republican candidate, Greg Gianforte — a failure in this test of courage. Montana sawyers show courage when we fall that six ton widow maker. Montana farmers show courage when we lay down hard cash for fuel and seed and fertilizer on a bet that we’ll get a fai...
Editor, I am writing in support of Rob Quist to fill the vacant seat in the U.S House. Although I am not a native Montanan, I feel I have met and spoken to enough Montanans to get an idea of the independent, can-do spirit that makes this state great. Rob Quist has these qualities; he also has a practical, creative work ethic and willingness to negotiate that will move our country in a more compassionate direction. You can see his practicality in in his strong stand to keep public lands in public in order to provide job...
Greg Gianforte, a devout family man, moved to Montana decades ago and founded a company that evolved to develop high-tech $90,000 jobs. When his growing company had a shortage of skilled labor, he started a scholarship to encourage Montana students to learn computer tech skills so they could stay in our state and get high-paying jobs. He has devoted time with thousands of voters on a 75,000 mile campaign across the state to meet and listen to Montanans at rallies in big communities as well as small towns. Greg will fight for...
Editor, We have a job opening for the person best-qualified to represent Montana in the hugely important position of U.S. congressman. As such, he must speak for all Americans, not just Montanans. He must not only have insight into state and national issues but also international. Therefore, our candidate’s priority must be far above that of personal aspirations or financial gain. This is not simply a “popularity contest.” We seek competency, knowledge, values, and dedication with accountability for the huge respo...
I would like to give an update on my Eagle Scout Project that was in the Havre Daily News Dec. 30, 2016. My project was to place drop boxes in several locations where old American flags can be dropped off and then be retired at a retirement ceremony. As of Sunday, March 26, all flag drop boxes have been set in their locations. Hingham — Spencer’s Highway Bar and Grille; Chinook — Blaine County Courthouse; Havre — Havre/Hill County Library, Holiday Village Mall and Anthony Cammon State Farm Insurance. So far we have collect...
Editor, Why not vote for Gianforte? Both candidates wear cowboy hats, but there is nothing of significance under Gianforte’s hat, just another rich guy trying to buy a political seat. We have a candidate in Rob Quist who has traveled the state as an emissary of good will for all Montanans, not just the rich ones. Superpacs for Ryan and Zinke have poured money for some fearful, paranoid ads about liberals. They think that throwing money around is all it takes for Montanans to vote blindly. I think Montanans are smarter than t...
Editor, In following our current congression-al contest closely one must question — is this Montana office for sale to the highest bidder? Rob Quist’s opponent and backers are once again spending millions trying to buy another Montana leadership post with clever corporate TV ads filled with falsity attempting to smear Mr. Quist. Gianforte boasts he cannot be bought because of his personal wealth. For more than 40 years I have observed the way Rob Quist treats his family, friends and neighbors — always with courage, hones...
Editor, All of us who work with abused and neglected children want to thank the Havre Daily News for your coverage of the Pinwheel Garden in recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Child abuse can be easy to ignore, and — as with all the coverage HDN gives CASA — we genuinely appreciate the extra attention. Although it is not an oversight, omission, or correction, I fear our press release, and the article based on it, insufficiently expressed our gratitude to the local Department of Health and Human Services, Ch...
Spring is in the air! Many of you are already planning your gardens, looking forward to sunshine and rejoice as trees begin to bud and flowers start to emerge. Here at Plant a Seed … Read!, we are anxious for our Spring Planting for Literacy campaign from April through June to enable us to: • Increase the awareness of the benefits of reading aloud to children from birth; • Provide books through the Imagination Library to all children from birth to age 5 in Blaine and Hill Counties; • Offer workshops to parents on purpose...
Dear Editor: The Children’s Organ Transplant Association was founded in April 1986 when residents of Bloomington, Indiana, rallied around a toddler who needed a life-saving liver transplant. In less than eight weeks, the community raised $100,000 to place the boy on the organ waiting list. But he died before an organ was found. Those community volunteers, along with his parents, turned tragedy into triumph by using the funds they raised to help other transplant families. For more than three decades, COTA has assisted thousand...
In 2012 the People of Montana, by a supermajority, adopted CI-166, (codified as §§ 13-35-501-504), which requires this State’s Congressional delegation to support the adoption of a Constitutional Amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s infamous 2010 decision in Citizens United and to restrict our constitutional rights to natural human beings. Only one member of Montana’s congressional delegation, Sen. Jon Tester, has complied with this law. Indeed, Sen. Tester was one of the first members of Congress to introdu...
Editor, Senate Bill 155 is an egregious overreach by out-of-state groups to take local control from Montanans. This bill would change Montana seed laws and take away power from the hands of our local officials, which is where it has been for decades and where it should stay. The language from SB155 can be found in several other state legislatures right now, all developed by a pay-to-play group funded by Monsanto, Dow, and the Koch brothers. Well, Montanans aren’t about to be duped by a few billionaires — or are we? The billio...
Editor: Republicans, like Greg Gianforte, say they are all about a “right to life.” But their recent efforts to repeal Obamacare prove how dishonest they are. The recent plan to replace Obamacare that Trump and congressional Republicans proposed would have dramatically cut taxes for the rich while raising costs for everyone else, making health care unaffordable not only to the poor but to many in the middle class. To put it in blunt terms, it would have killed people that Obamacare is now giving lifesaving care to. I don...
As Montana farmers, we grow a huge variety of food. Our counties differ vastly in size, climate and soil. But one thing is consistent for all producers: Not one of our 56 counties has ever regulated our seeds. So why does Senate Bill 155 exist? In 2013, Bayer and Monsanto presented draft legislation for politicians to chip away at local control of the seed market. They wanted to make sure that local farmers couldn’t stop them from developing test-plots and moving in next door. The bill language in SB 155 is nearly an exact c...
Editor, I am a resident in a nursing home in Eureka. I am very worried about my quality of care as the government wants to reduce our Medicaid for long-term care. I have multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and arthritis in my knees and hands, and I can’t walk. I worked as a superior court clerk in San Diego with a leg brace using a cane. On Christmas Eve at work I lost my eye sight in my left eye due to my MS optical neuritis. I also had bathroom problems. I took a disability retirement after working 19 years. I only went on Medica...
Editor, In moving forward with our new 4-H Chuckwagon facility, we want to see how much interest we have from any parties, tradesmen or contractors who are willing to help in all areas of construction. We will be having a 50-foot by 140-foot metal building constructed by Clausen and Sons, Dave Clausen being the project manager. One end of the building will be a 15-foot by 50-foot storage area, with two multi-use areas, the kitchen and restrooms occupying the rest of the structure. At this time, the details for the heating/coo...
Editor, The recent budget proposal from the White House included a shocker: The president wants to eliminate the 21st Century Community Learning Centers initiative, the main federal funding stream for afterschool programs. More astonishing was the rationale the White House offered: The budget chief said there’s “no demonstrable evidence” that afterschool works. He is flat wrong about that. Study after study has provided evidence that afterschool programs work. They help improve students’ grades and test scores, and they al...
