Editor, I am writing to remind the Havre community of the importance of the 2020 Census, with the hope that those of you who have not yet completed the Census may learn of its significance, especially in our rural communities. Growing up in a rural community, I have witnessed firsthand the barriers we face with internet and phone service compared to larger towns and cities. These disparities, unfortunately, make it more difficult for rural residents to access the 2020 Census form. In addition, in many rural areas, the Census...
Editor, In these days of racial tensions, I must speak of my multiracial family. All of my children have Black heritage. All have Native American heritage, all have Gros Ventre ancestors. Some are enrolled at Fort Belknap. Some are enrolled Crows. Some have white ancestors. I have many brothers and sisters on the Fort Belknap, Blackfeet, and Rocky Boy’s reservations. So do Black lives matter? Yes, they do! So also do Native American lives matter for my family. We know of missing and murdered Native women. Many of you also h...
The Kiwanis Club of Havre regrets to announce that we will not be holding our annual Pancake Day this fall. We feel that the risks to public safety outweigh the benefit to be gained from holding the event. We do plan on holding it again next year, and hope that all of our loyal customers will not be too disappointed this year. We thank all of our customers and volunteers who have helped us with this event in the past, and hope to see you in the future. Dean Person, Secretary Havre Kiwanis Club...
Editor, I have been reading with interest the news articles about the disruption of the U.S. Postal Service over the last week. I rely on the USPS to deliver several of my life-saving medications. The latest attempts by Postmaster General DeJoy and the Trump administration to disrupt our access to the mail may delay my latest delivery of medication. I am terrified of what that may mean for my health and wellbeing. Some of my most important medications are delivered by mail, including my high blood pressure and heart...
Editor, The Bozeman Municipal Watershed logging project, the South Plateau Landscape logging project near West Yellowstone, and other plans to log public lands in Montana ignore the scientific fact that logging exposes soil to the sun and wind, to heat and drying. The drying out of the continent, particular in the West, is more than a matter of episodic droughts, more than lack of precipitation. Hotter climate extremes increase the drying, as does logging. The current trend is “progressively lower river flows, drier l...
Editor, It is a shame so many Montana voters do not understand how to vote. But, not to worry, in the recent election many public-spirited national corporations, foundations and political figures volunteered their time and money to inform and educate Montana voters. It should be obvious that these national figures and organizations understand Montana’s economic circumstances, cultural background, values system and candidate selection better than those of us who live isolated lives in Montana. These nationally known i...
To the Editor, The U.S. Postal Service is in trouble now thanks to Trump’s misguided appointment of DeJoy as Postmaster General. The removal of the post boxes and mail sorting machines to influence the election is hurting millions of people. A family in Montana with a small business shipped hundreds of orders only to start getting calls that packages had not arrived in time, if at all. COVID-19 is hurting businesses. Trump and Dejoy have effectively made sure your postal-dependent business will suffer. This is happening! N...
Festival Days is a time-honored tradition since 1980. The Havre Area Chamber of Commerce was excited to celebrate our 40th parade through beautiful Havre. However, we are sad to announce that the 2020 Havre Festival Days Parade has been canceled due to coronavirus concerns and restrictions. The decision was made in conjunction with the Hill County Health Department that the state would not be in Phase 3 in the coming weeks. The health and well-being of our parade participants and guests, as well as that of our volunteer...
Did you know that in one year, donations to United Way of Hill County touched more than 45,300 lives in our community? Thank you for your support and kindness, as we continue to live united together. United Way supports non-profit funded partners that strive to serve those in need in Hill County by providing services and support through education, health care, and financial guidance. Due to the pandemic and safety protocols still in place we have made the difficult decision to cancel our Annual Crab Boil Fundraiser. The Crab...
Dear editor: During the first 20 minutes of our shopping at Havre’s Walmart on Aug. 16, I noticed six adults and two children (about eight years old) not wearing face masks. I asked an assistant manager what could be done about that because those are the kind of people who spread COVID-19. the assistant manager replied that the store manager, Dave Tolley, says there’s nothing they can do. Nonsense! Managers can tell the unmasked people to keep a mask on or leave immediately, unless they present genuine proof that they hav...
Editor, I’ve never been to the Badger-Two Medicine, but I’ve been hearing a lot about it and I support protecting. Why do I support protecting it despite never having stepped foot there? I am a Montana native who was raised in a hunting family. As someone who grew up vacationing and recreating on public land, I learned that they belong to us all and a win for public lands anywhere is a win for public lands everywhere. Such is the case with the Badger-Two Medicine Cultural Heritage Act brought by Sen. Jon Tester. Under thi...
Editor, Politicians are only as good as the words they speak. Hill County Commissioner Mark Peterson should take that to heart. Thursday, Peterson and fellow Commissioner Diane McLean voted to reject an all-mail ballot despite the pandemic and despite the strong recommendation of county election officials. The third commissioner, Mike Wendland, cast the only yes vote. Friday I called Peterson to ask what it would take for him to change his vote. He told me he would strongly consider changing his vote if a majority of people...
Dear Editor, I read with interest then dismay about Hill County commissioners voting against a mail-in ballot election. I was stunned that they would decide to risk the lives of the Hill County residents during this worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. The election officials have run mail-in ballot elections many times in our county and proven that the elections are safe and fair. The election officials and our health officials laid out logical, well-informed reasons to hold a mail-in ballot election. The no-voting commissioners...
Editor, I am one of the election judges who made the hard decision to not work at the polls this year. I am in a vulnerable age group. It was a difficult decision to make, as I have been an election judge for many many years. It can be a long and tiring day (6:30 a.m. until late evening), yet it is satisfying in knowing it is a service to our country. Of course, I had certainly hoped for all mail-in ballots. Yet now, because of the two county commissioners who voted against all mail-in ballots, my decision is even more...
Editor, As the coronavirus rages on across our state, it has caused yet another crisis — child hunger. Thousands of families with kids right here in Montana are now dealing with unemployment, rising food prices, eviction and hunger. And yet Congress continues to fail these children by leaving nutrition assistance out of the coronavirus relief package. Hunger is a problem we can actually fix. Increasing SNAP benefits by 15 percent would mean an additional $25 per month per person. Just $25 per month for a child would allow f...
Editor, In one of the many informational TV programs about COVID-19 a doctor explained why masks work. (Sorry, I didn’t catch his name) He stated that even though the virus is microscopic, it is surrounded by droplets of moisture from your respiratory system causing it to be absorbed by your mask. You are therefore protecting other people. This is important as many infected people are asymptomatic (without symptoms). He went on to say that the mask may not protect you from someone else because by the time the virus reaches y...
Editor, “We are making this so convenient.” Hill County Commissioner Diane McLean regarding voting, 8/13/2020 No, you’re not. You’re making it exceedingly difficult, expensive and dangerous. “Over the past 20 years, more than 250 million ballots have been cast by mail nationwide, while there have been just 143 criminal convictions for election fraud related to mail ballots. That averages out to about one case per state every six or seven years, or a fraud rate of 0.00006 percent. There is no evidence that mail-ball...
To the Editor, Your Aug. 14 editorial says “All of the arguments against mail ballots have been debunked.” By whom? You? It is naïve to think the only human endeavor in which people won’t lie, commit fraud, or make mistakes is in elections, especially general elections. In the last two months, New Jersey officials were charged with voter fraud after hundreds of ballots were found in a mailbox in Paterson, a New York race had 100s of disputed ballots including missing postmarks, and a West Virginia mail carrier was charge...
Editor, I have some concerns if Hill County is forced to have polling places open for in person voting. I am sure that this responsibility of the clerk and recorder to solve these problems. I talked to a friend who has been a polling place worker and declined this year because of medical issues. Finding workers to staff the polls might be difficult. Training takes about one hour. In a group setting. The actual Election Day commitment is about 12 hours, also in a group setting. They would have to make contact with the voters,...
I too say “Shame on McLean and Peterson” for endangering peoples lives by banning a mail ballot vote. Come on people do you realize how deadly COVID-19 virus is? Then again those that vote to hold fairs in the counties across Montana on a weekend and the following weekend many viruses reported, some small children! One of Havre’s medical offices even closed for several days. Come on Montana, wake up so we can end this serious pandemic! Carol Heggen Kremlin...
Dear Editor: The Hill County Commissioners have voted down mail-in ballots for the General Election because they feel it is right I guess or maybe some other fraud idea. Twenty-four people told Commissioner Peterson they wanted to vote in person, every voters right and they could even do so with a mail-in ballot, just take with you to the court house and vote right there as in the Primary. Don’t trust the mail, walk it into the court house. A big question will be just where are the polls going to be located. Two school l...
Editor, Anyone who denies the government’s, any government’s, right, let alone obligation, to impose rules and regulations to safeguard its citizenry, is ignoring the timeless basis upon which all civilizations were founded. Pick up your Bible, Talmud, Koran or whatever, and find the Ten Commandments and other tribal prohibitions, such as refraining from dining on cloven-hooved animals and cleaning yourself with the hand that feeds you. They were not written as some mystical, moral plaudits to gain God’s blessing, thoug...
Editor, I have been an Election Judge in Hill County for over 20 years, so I feel as qualified as anybody to speak to the election process. Having worked with both Clerk and Recorders Diane Mellem and Sue Armstrong, I have witnessed firsthand the great length they and their staff go to ensure fair and accurate election results. Their integrity is unquestionable. If you perceive problems with the election process, I encourage you to do some further investigating instead of basing your opinion on hearsay. I find it...
Dear Editor: We just finished reading the Havre Daily News article concerning your votes on the decision not to provide general election mail ballots to the electorate of Hill County. First, we would like to say that we appreciate Commissioner Mike Wendland’s vote supporting the ballot mailing, it makes good sense. Secondly, we want to voice our dissatisfaction with the other two members of the commission who voted to have the election take place in a physical location at a time when we are dealing with a potentially l...
Editor, Hill County Commissioners Mark Peterson and Diane McLean need to re-evaluate their duties to this community. One would assume it is their job to listen to those with knowledge and expertise and then make the best decision for everyone. Yes, they are responsible to their constituents and should listen to their concerns. But, it is also their job to make a decision based on the best information they are given, and then explain to their constituents why the decision is being made. The Hill County Clerk and Recorder...
