  • Western Pharmacy thanks community for support after robbery

    Western Drug Pharmacy Staff|Updated Aug 1, 2014
    1

In light of recent events, the staff at Western Drug Pharmacy would like to take a moment to say thank you to our community. The amount of support we have received over the past few weeks from patients, local businesses and associations has truly been overwhelming. This has been a difficult time for us, and your kind words are appreciated more than you can know. A special thanks goes out to the dispatchers and police officers at the Havre Police Department for their professionalism, time and efficiency following the... Full story

  • Tilleman Motor Co. goes above and beyond

    Bauers and Vanderzwans|Updated Jul 31, 2014

We began our vacation from Saskatchewan to Las Vegas July 19, when we barely got to Havre to find our Dodge Journey was losing power. We stopped at a local Havre business who referred us to Tilleman Motor Co. Our journey made it to the highway turnout so ended up pushing it across the highway as one of their employees came running out to help. The possible diagnosis was a faulty alternator but no part was available in Havre. After many phone calls by these employees, they found a part in Great Falls. My husband was able to go... Full story

  • Havre community helps with film project

    Hope Proctor|Updated Jul 21, 2014

Being a high school student, you would expect me to enjoy my summer days in blissful laziness, or be working at a surmner job. Quite the opposite; I have been scripting, designing and filming a documentary with the theme illustrating how fashion has been influenced by history until most recent decades. This documentary would not have been possible without the help of Gary & Leo’s Fresh Foods, The Key and Messiah Lutheran Church. Gary & Leo’s and The Key opened their doors accommodating my filming needs, moved displays and allow... Full story

  • Montana delegation should work to close southern border

    Bob Sivertsen|Updated Jul 8, 2014
    1

To Sen. Jon Tester, Sen. John Walsh, Rep. Steve Daines: The United States of America, the land of the free, just celebrated its 238th birthday. We, the people, enjoy more freedom than anywhere else in the world. Having said that, though, I have not, in my lifetime, seen a greater assault on our rights and liberties. We have some grave challenges. I would attest that most crucial among them is our broken immigration system. The United States is being invaded on the southern border and little is being done about it. Most... Full story

  • Replace Ragnar, maintain political correctness

    Rick Dow|Updated Jul 3, 2014
    5

The owners of the Vikings must face the paternalism and audacity of "White Privilege" that the mascot, Ragnar, projects. In this age of raising awareness and promoting diversity how can the Vikings in good conscious retain Ragnar as their mascot, nay our mascot?! Ragnar was part of a marauding band of conquerors who used force rather than conflict resolution to settle differences with others. War is not the answer, need I say more? His flimsy helmet with its horns made from a slain animal could not have protected him and his... Full story

  • Community help, love saved her from the morgue

    Gene Allen|Updated Jun 30, 2014

I would like to thank the Havre Fire Department ambulance crew who responded to the emergency call June 1, 2014, at Scotty's Ice Cream. Thank you for your professionalism, expertise and understanding and for not letting me go home. While I chose to ride with my granddaughter and her boyfriend instead of being transported by ambulance, your kindness and insistence that I go to the hospital is the reason I am able to thank you today instead of residing at the morgue. To the Northern Montana Hospital ER nurses and Dr. Eric... Full story

  • Our View: Hi-Line darts and laurels, June 27

    Updated Jun 27, 2014
    1

Dart — Judge G. Todd Baugh of Billings ought to try working at McDonald’s during the lunch hour. The judge has his foot in his mouth so often he will soon have athlete’s tongue. This time, he told a defendant who’d pleaded guilty to vandalism that in order to pay his restitution, he should give up his fast-food employment and “get a real job.” Fast-food workers have one of the toughest jobs around. They have to deal with angry customers who are in a hurry, uninspired co-workers, equipment that doesn’t work and supervisors w... Full story

  • Supports efforts to make abuses at Northern public

    Carol J. Ortman|Updated Jun 26, 2014

I am writing to thank the Havre Daily News for taking legal action to make public the allegation of human rights abuses at Montana State University-Northern. The taxpayers of Montana fund the public university system, and we have the right to know what is happening in our public universities. I have had concerns for some time now that the commissioner of higher education and the Board of Regents seem to sweep serious problems in our universities under the rug. Why are the hard-working taxpayers of Montana being forced to... Full story

  • Elks Lodge encourages citizens to observe Flag Day

    Bob Nieuwenhuyse|Updated Jun 13, 2014

Havre Elks Lodge No. 1201 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks again was very proud and honored to be part of the community Memorial Day service, melding our Flag Day tradition with their Memorial Day service, exemplifying the motto: "One Nation, Under God" — one community, one nation, honoring our flag, our country, our troops. Throughout our American history, the significance of the U.S. flag's colors has come to correspond with those of the great seal of our country: white signifying purity and innocence; red h... Full story

  • Havre Pride showed great community spirit

    Debbie Vandeberg|Updated May 21, 2014

Havre Pride cleanup this past Saturday was the second attempt to hold the activity — as the April date was taken over by Mother Nature and some bad weather. To those who braved the April date ... thank you so very much for your participation. When weather plays a role in an event and a quick decision is needed to be made to let folks know about changes, our most immediate means to get the word out is the radio. And, we know we missed some of you, and we are sorry for that. And, those folks out this past Saturday, we thank y... Full story

  • Wallet found, Canadian visitor is happy

    Shirley Soutar|Updated May 19, 2014

While traveling through your town on May 8 from Alberta to Ontario, we stopped to shop at your mall. When I went to pay for my purchases, I realized that I didn't have my wallet. After searching through the parking lot and the car and asking at a few stores, I went into Herbergers and asked them if anyone had found a wallet. A very nice sales lady hugged me and told me that her friend (I think her name was Cynthia) had found a wallet in the parking lot and had brought it into the store. Although I offered her money to pass... Full story

  • Problems at veterans hospitals are disgusting

    Don Mahlum|Updated May 9, 2014

I and other local veterans are really disgusted with the reported action by the Department of Veterans Affairs in Arizona where, according to TV reports, the VA has had possibly up to some-40 veterans die awaiting medical treatment at the VA medical treatment place. If these reports are correct, this is no way to treat people who are giving so much for our country. In my opinion, I hope they didn't get a bonus for doing an "outstanding" job. I worked as a teacher for many years for the taxpayers and I did not ever get a... Full story

  • Former Gov. Racicot should have stood up for Barry Beach

    Jude Mahlum|Updated May 6, 2014

I am extremely disappointed that Mark Racicot lacked the courage to attend the review of Barry Beach's clemency application, instead, choosing to deliver his message to the board hours later. I was disappointed but not surprised. This is just another example of the sneaky way he conducts himself. Had he been there, he would have heard many people speak quite eloquently about the reasons they feel Barry deserves clemency. They were heartfelt and practical. These are people who did not know Barry prior to his being released... Full story

  • Why do single moms pay taxes, when corporations don't?

    John Snider|Updated May 6, 2014

Editor: I am writing Clay Christian, Montana commissioner of high education, Paul Tuss, chair of the Board of Regents, and the various university presidents and chancellors at the public universities in our state if they will join me in demanding that U.S. corporations begin to pay their fair share of taxes. Higher education could be free in Montana and the rest of our country if corporations started to fulfill their civic duty and pay taxes. According to Citizens for Tax Justice, 26 corporations, including General Electric,... Full story

  • Kudos to Bullock for offering breath of fresh air

    Loren Rose|Updated Apr 24, 2014

The recently passed Farm Bill provided an opportunity for states to assist the Forest Service in getting much-needed work done on federal land. States had 60 days to designate appropriate lands to the agency. Our governor, Steve Bullock, did a wonderful job reallocating resources to meet this timeline. Gov. Bullock enlisted help from his staff, the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, the U.S. Forest Service and an ad-hoc group of stakeholders. The lands designated were based on hard data collected annually by th... Full story

  • Stranded travelers appreciate Havre helpfulness

Recently over the Easter weekend, my wife and I traveled to Harlem, Mont., to attend a birthday celebration for her aunt who had just turned 91 years old. We traveled over on Saturday and returned back to Pablo on Sunday, Easter Day — Rose Gilbert’s birthday. The Gilbert/Bahr families had a great time. We checked out of our room in Chinook early Sunday morning and were heading back to Pablo for Easter dinner with our children, as dinner was at 2 p.m, and lo and behold the inevitable happened, a flat tire. We were then abo... Full story

  • Car seat safety is critical

    Mary Owens|Updated Apr 21, 2014

Many people are wondering what is the law on child passenger seats and where can we get them checked. The Montana law for child passenger seats: Section 1. (1) If a child under 6 years of age and weighing less than 60 pounds is a passenger in a motor vehicle, that motor vehicle must be equipped with one child safety restraint for each child in the vehicle and each child must be properly restrained. It's a disgrace to hear all about the fraud on the rez. It was a wonderful thing to receive all of that money for the water projects. The tribe has come a very long way. I remember when I/we used to haul water. My brother Duncan was more like my parent to me, and he still is, as I turn to him to listen to my woes. He used to be a tribal council member at Rocky Boy. I recall when the tribe was awarded millions to start up a judicial system on the rez. That's even coming further in life. It's also understandable when someone... Full story

Our kids have only one hope of escaping fear in their lives. That hope is what I call Teacher, we as a whole community. The symbol of tough love education is: Don’t lean toward excuses, drugs and danger, but to lean toward health and happiness. But how can we strive to become better in our community unless we come together. I am hoping that God answers my prayers for all the corruption happening in Rocky Boy. Can we get justice? How about forfeit all tribal money you stole, cars, trucks, houses, land and cattle. You sure in t... Full story

  • Benefit programs encourage people not to work

    Pegi Rambo|Updated Apr 16, 2014

I recently read an article in your paper about increasing the minimum wage. I had to think about how and if this would impact the food stamp problem. This is strictly my opinion, but here goes. A lot of smaller businesses would close. A few of the bigger businesses would cut their staffing down. It is a given that prices would go up on everything. Those who already are making above the minimum would have little or no chance of getting an additional raise. Now we have a lot of what used to be middle class workers down to what... Full story
