  • Letter to the Editor - Tester, thanks for work on internet

    Updated Mar 1, 2018

Editor, Whether you’re binge-watching Netflix or you’re a business owner or a teacher, the internet is an essential component of what you do each day. I know this firsthand. I edited and wrote for online publications for a number of years before I retired. So I have to applaud the efforts of U.S. Sen. Jon Tester to ensure that all rural Montanans have access to high-speed internet service. Recently, Sen. Tester learned that the USDA Rural Broadband Access Loan Guarantee program had approved only three loan applications in...

  • Letter to the Editor - Professor could be a spark for positive change at Northern instead of detracting

    Updated Feb 28, 2018

Editor, Reference to letter to editor of Jan. 5, 2018 by John Snider and comments made in Havre Daily News article of Feb. 16, 2018. In his continued true form, John Snider, Montana State University-Northern English instructor, continues to be critical and negative to any new ideas for Northern and has never written an editorial about the good things happening on the Northern campus. Nor has he presented any ideas or sparks, or a willingness to take a leadership role on campus and in the community to showcase being a real...

    Updated Feb 28, 2018

Editor, I would like to congratulate the firefighters of AIFF Local #601 on the 100th anniversary of their organization. I am grateful for your unwavering dedication to Havre and the surrounding areas. The job of a first responder is not an easy one. It takes a great deal of bravery and intuitiveness to react in situations that our dangerous and often unpredictable. As an E.R. Nurse, I am lucky to work along side such caring and compassionate individuals. Thank a fireman! Sincerely, Audrey Turner President of MNA Local...

  • Letter to the Editor - Thanks for the good sportsmanship and good luck at state, Lady Bears

    Updated Feb 27, 2018

Editor, Last Saturday night while attending the Box Elder Lady Bears game with Grass Range-Winnett in Great Falls, I witnessed outstanding Lady Bears sportsmanship during the game. At numerous times, they helped the opposing players to their feet if they had fallen and in one instance, this happened while play was still going on! I was totally impressed. Kudos to both the players and their coaches, who promoted this type of competition. Congratulations and Good Luck at State Lady Bears, I’ll be cheering for you. Roger H...

  • Letter to the Editor - Thank you, firefighters

    Updated Feb 26, 2018

Editor, It’s easy to take for granted that someone will always show up when we have an emergency. We dial 911 and, within minutes, help is on the way. This doesn’t happen magically. It is possible because of dedicated people who take turns keeping constant vigil over our town. It requires commitment and preparation for a team to be ready at a moment’s notice to handle life-threatening or gruesome situations with a clear head. Many of us can think of a time in our own lives that we have depended on such a team. As our local...

  • Letter to the Editor - Fort Belknap name needs to be changed

    Updated Feb 26, 2018

Ha midaguyabi (Hello my relatives) We are writing this letter to inform the people and communities that the Tribal Government Class at Hays-Lodge Pole High School feels there should be a name change for the Fort Belknap Reservation. We did research on the name “Fort Belknap” and came up with these documented facts: • “Fort Belknap was established on the south side of the Milk River in 1869, one mile southwest from the present town site Chinook. The Fort was named for William W. Belknap, who was secretary of war at the tim...

Editor, Thank you to the community of Havre for your support of the 9C boys/girls basketball tournament. The Havre Area Chamber of Commerce values your support and helping to make the tournament a success. A special thanks goes out to Dennis Murphy and Ginger Chagnon for all their hard work. Meal sponsors and monetary sponsors for the hospitality room included Coca Cola, Culligan, D.A. Davidson, Valley Furniture, Master Sports, Tire Rama, Holiday Village Mall, Credit Bureau of Havre, Tilleman Motors, Hi-Line Dodge, MSU-N...

  • Letter to the Editor - Tribal official wrong on water situation

    Updated Feb 15, 2018

Editor, Curtis Monteau, the statements you made in regard to the water not being out for more then 24 hours is a lie and I can prove that by the first phone call two weeks ago after it was out for five days and again to 911 the second time it was out for four days. That water is muddy water also, making your last statement appear as dumb as the other statements mentioned so far. I am not going to sit back and allow lies to be spread when I can prove what you’re saying are lies. Also the picture sent to the EPA and n...

  • Letter to the Editor - Havre Daily at new low

    Updated Feb 9, 2018

Editor, I have not lived in Havre for almost 20 years, but have kept up on local news via the Havre Daily. The article that was posted about the Dean/St. Jude’s shut down was repugnant. This whole farce of a Senate campaign is bad enough, but when you take and publish gossip and rumors about a good family involved in a custody dispute, you have reached a new low. Tim Leeds and the HDN owes a public apology for their lack of ethics in this “story.” James Dean is portraying classic physiologic abuser behavior and you fed right...

  • Letter to the Editor - School actions should be for the children

    Updated Feb 9, 2018

Editor, Being a long-time Havre resident and a retired school teacher, I read with interest your recent article about the Havre Public Schools potential plans for reconfiguring the schools. I feel the school board should be commended for being proactive in their planning; it just makes sense to do that hard thinking and positing before the time to move forward arrives. I realize that the article contained ideas, with nothing set in stone, as was said, this is the time to get everything out for discussion. Some of the ideas...

  • Letter to the Editor - Friends of the Havre-Hill County Library host Pie Social

    Updated Feb 7, 2018

Editor, The Friends of the Havre-Hill County Library will be holding their Valentine Pie Social Tuesday, Feb. 13, at the library. This pie social is usually held on Valentine’s Day. This year, however, Ash Wednesday and Valentine’s Day fall on the same day. The Friends decided to change the day for the pie social and hold it the day before. The time is the same, noon to 4 o’clock. As always, there will be a large variety of pie to choose from and ice cream to go with it. Coffee and punch will also be served. The funds raise...

  • Letter to the Editor - Article beyond the level of good taste

    Updated Feb 7, 2018

Editor, We would not deny the right of the press to report on an incident such as a Senate candidate being escorted off the premises of a school because of his failure to conform to a court order regarding the custody of minors. The facts surrounding the Dean’s candidacies rightly should also be considered fair game. As a local paper, however, you should know that simply not mentioning the names of the minors in question would in no way protect their identity or privacy. In an incredibly painful family situation, you have i...

  • Letter to the Editor - Article was sensationalism

    Updated Feb 7, 2018

Editor, Only the first two paragraphs of the Feb. 5, 2018, article which reported the lockdown at St. Jude’s were what I would consider “news-worthy.” The rest of the article was simply an attempt at sensationalism aimed at getting more people to read this article. In a small community such as this, it isn’t terribly difficult to figure out who the other party in the custody dispute is, but you felt the need to name them, along with allegations that have already been deemed unfounded. Dragging this family through the mud dur...

  • Letter to the Editor - Shame on the Havre Daily News

    Updated Feb 7, 2018

Editor, To all who were involved in the printing of the recent Dean article: How dare you involve yourselves in the custody battle and allow the news organization to be a puppet of James Dean’s manipulation tactics, and party to the slander of two individuals’ good names. Shame on you! I have spent my life working with children, and I was appalled that Havre Daily News would contribute to the damage of two girls’ emotional health by the printing of this article Yes, they will hear talk; yes, they will read this artic...

  • Letter to the Editor - MDT needs to focus on productive projects on US2

    Updated Feb 2, 2018

Friends and neighbors, Happy New Year. 2018 promises to be a great year, rest assured there will be challenges, that’s life. I contend, “With every challenge comes opportunity.” The Highway 2 Association continues pressing for Highway 2 upgrades — 4 for 2 —which is the prerequisite to enhancing the economic viability of communities off the U.S. 2 corridor. One of our objectives has been working with Montana Department of Transportation toward commonsense, cost-effective Highway projects. The voice of the people was able to s...

  • Letter to the Editor - Montanans: Thieves want to steal our legacy.

    Updated Feb 1, 2018

Cliven Bundy came to Paradise, Montana, to speak about his problems with the federal government. Bundy said he is being persecuted for not paying for use of public lands. A brief list of his “problems” is enlightening to say the least. He does not recognize powers of the federal government, stating that he has no contract with the federal government. “My 15-second defense is I only graze my cattle on Clark County, Nevada, land and I have no contract with the federal government,” he said. “I haven’t had a contract with the fe... Full story

  • Letter to the Editor - The War of 2018

    Updated Jan 31, 2018

The troops were on display Saturday, Jan. 20. Did you see the Women’s March? Of course, you did. Did you see the March for Life? Not likely. At the heart of both is the issue of abortion. Over the past two years Planned Parenthood has doubled it’s profits to nearly $100 million. I’m speaking up for life, for the baby, because he/she has no voice. Since 1973, 60 million babies have been victims. During the time of a crisis pregnancy, women can panic. At those times they seek for an answer. There are clinics where they are t...

  • Letter to the Editor - Thanks to all for Chamber luncheon

    Updated Jan 22, 2018

Editor, Isn’t it funny how the “best laid plans” fail to materialize sometimes? It was disappointing to miss the annual Chamber luncheon meeting. There were many, many people that I wanted to thank at that meeting and now that list is even longer. Thanks to my daughter, Marisa Robertson for stepping up immediately to do everything she could that morning in preparation for the luncheon and for giving part of my presentation. Thanks to China Bohn and Julea Robbins for jumping in also. Of course, the original thank-you list incl...

  • Letter to the Editor - Hats off to nurses

    Updated Jan 22, 2018

Editor, First I would like to thank all the nurses who choose to work in health care in our community. We find nurses at the hospital, clinic, home health care, senior care facilities, taking care of us all … from delivering the new babies to taking care of our feet and dietary needs and helping the elderly who can no longer take care of themselves. We are very fortunate to have so many dedicated people helping make Havre, Montana, a great place to live and raise a family. Most recently, thank you for the free community c...

  • Letter to the Editor - Northern Associated Students support sports complex

    Updated Jan 19, 2018

Editor, The Associated Students of Montana State University-Northern support Chancellor Greg Kegel, and the MSUN Administration, in the building of a sports complex. This sports complex and field on MSUN’s campus will increase the ongoing retention and recruitment efforts. The MSUN administration is creating a positive movement toward the future of Northern; this will achieve growth in our enrollment. An increase in enrollment will allow for more academic funding. It should also be public knowledge that the football field w...

  • Letter to the Editor - Thank you to Custom Collission Repair

    Updated Jan 15, 2018

I would like to take this opportunity to commend the team at Custom Collision Repair for using their own time repairing two vehicles throughout the year which are then given away on Festival Days weekend to a family that is truly in need of a vehicle but, due to circumstances, cannot afford one. Custom Collision Repair does not fund this project, it comes out of the pockets of his employees and sponsors. This is the beginning of a new year, and I know this is the time when all organizations are geared up asking for donations...
