Hey, Chinook, we did it! Each donation can save up to three lives. Because of your generosity, 126 lives will be saved. There were 48 individuals who showed up to donate at the blood drive Tuesday, Jan. 8. There were two deferrals, making our total number of pints donated 46, exceeding our goal of 42 by four. These numbers are really something to celebrate and we are grateful for each and every one of you who made our success possible. Jim Inman reached 16 gallons at this drive, Louise Nissen 6 gallons, Roger Fischer 3 gallon...
I would like to publicly express my thanks to the Montana Department of Transportation crew that has been working to clean up the trees on Fifth Avenue. They removed two old, half-dead unsightly trees on the boulevard near my house. These trees were constantly dropping dead branches on the street and in my yard with every wind storm. Not only did they get rid of the menace trees, but came back and ground all the stumps down. Thank you, MDT crew! Allen Ost Havre...
It depends on who you ask. Are beavers a nuisance or an invaluable Mother Nature-provided stream ecosystem engineer? Like many things in our biological world, both attitudes are partly right and partly not right. Beavers cut down trees, flood areas, alter vegetation communities, jeopardize infrastructure, sometimes spread diseases and complicate some irrigation practices. All of these can be problems, nuisances, costs, lost profits and inconveniences to personal goals. However, beaver activity also contributes to stream...
Thank God a group of Republican legislators have taken the initiative to rid Montana House of Representatives of a 30-year supermajority experiment that has contributed to hyper-partisanship disdained by most of Montana’s citizens. The Montana constitution defines only a few cases when a legislative supermajority vote is needed, for example, before spending trust funds, amending the constitution or overriding a governor’s veto. Nowhere does the constitution suggest the Legislature should adopt supermajority rules that lim...
Arthur Eugene Beckes sent a letter to Sen. Steve Daines Dec. 21 and allowed the Havre Daily News to reprint it here Sen. Daines, The Trump administration has lost Jim Mattis, a reasonable man in a post that absolutely requires reason. If this doesn’t alarm you, it should. Big numbers of competent people will no longer consider working with the misfit in the White House, as you are aware. Why would they? The closer anyone gets to this excuse for a leader, the more likely they are to get burned. So our nation is in a q...
Editor, Tree topping, or removing a major part of a large tree’s crown by cutting branches to stubs or to the trunk — see photo on the front page of the Havre Daily News 12-20 paper — is never an acceptable part of proper tree maintenance. If this is what is necessary, then the tree should be removed. Topping severely injures and infects trees, sometimes killing them outright. Topping also increases rapid regrowth which is weakly attached and more susceptible to storm and wind damage. Trees that have been carelessly toppe...
Editor, Wooden signs, hand-crafted ornaments, homemade dog treats and welded metal work awaited lucky buyers Dec. 13 at the Sunnyside Intermediate School trade fair. Thanks to the community’s stunning generosity, those items and much more — all created by students — raised $4,500 for area organizations. The money will go to the Havre Public Schools Scholarship, Havre Food Bank, Women’s and Children’s Shelter, Shriner’s Travel Fund and the Hi-Line Sletten Cancer Center. Through this success, our students learned how seeming...

I have been honored with an opportunity to serve our country as a member of the Customs and Border Patrol, Department of Homeland Security; and, I will begin working for the Havre Sector upon my departure from judicial...

The Martin Family of Hays, along with our employees at Martin’s Grocery, are all sponsoring a Christmas a Cap and Glove drive for all ages. With this we would like to open this up to anyone that would enjoy purchasing any caps and gloves for whatever age you choose. These will all be disbursed Friday, Dec. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Martin’s Grocery in Hays. We will hav...
Editor, The Blue Pony Booster Club is in need of nominations for the Dr. Jim Elliott Memorial Award. Dr. Elliott’s family gave the first award in 2001 and purchased a plaque that hangs in a trophy case at the Havre High School’s west foyer with the name of each recipient engraved on in. The Booster Club has been given the responsibility from the Elliott family of choosing someone to receive this award. The honor of receiving this award is based on volunteerism, along with personal and/or professional sacrifices made for the b...
Editor, A short time ago we experienced the death of a family loved one. The last few days of his life were spent in the comfort care section of Northern Montana Hospital. This was a very difficult time that was made bearable by the exceptionally kind and competent care he received. The nurses and staff went out of their way to help the family through this time with support and sympathy. We would like to thank them for all they did to help us through this time. D. Noffsinger Havre...

Ediitor, We would like to thank the wonderful mall employees and the very kind couple that helped my husband when he needed medical assistance at Holiday Village Mall on Monday. Also the EMTs and ER staff were so kind, knowledgeable and efficient. We want you to know he is doing well now. Dear Editor, For decades in Havre a team of people organize a traditional Thanksgiving dinner, this past Thursday was no exception. Our current mission statement is like the first celebrated Thanksgiving in 1621, that meal 397 years ago was arranged for strangers to come together to share a bountiful harvest and give thanks. Since that first gathering, the world has changed so much, our hearts have changed, too, many have lost their way to the table. This year, we delivered more meals to the homes than what we served in the...
To all bereaved parents, grandparents, siblings, and those who support them, The North Central Montana Compassionate Friends, along with the National Compassionate Friends, is participating in the 22nd annual World Wide Candle Lighting in remembrance of those children gone too soon. The death of a child is devastating and it’s important to the family that the child always be remembered. That’s why our chapter, based in Fort Benton, will take part in this worldwide event designed to honor the memories of all children, regardle...
I’ve surpassed 25 consecutive years of joining as many as 800 of my closest friends in savoring the turkey and all the fixins during the annual Community Thanksgiving Day Dinner, first in St. Jude’s Social Hall and then in the Parish Center. I knew about the dinner the first time around, but I and my two boys dined at my parents’ home the few years it was prepared and served, beginning in 1982. The anonymous donor, a popular Havre businessman, conceived the idea of picking up the $1,200 to $1,500 tab at a time when pover...
Dear Editor: The Badger Two-Medicine on the Rocky Mountain Front is a sacred area for the Blackfeet Tribe and one of Montana’s most spectacular landscapes This week, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke took an important step forward in protecting this part of Montana’s heritage when he moved to have the Department of Interior appeal a federal court ruling reinstating oil and gas leases in the Badger. For decades, conservationists, hunters and the Blackfeet Tribe have sought to protect the Badger-Two Medicine from oil and gas dev...
To The Editor: I am at a loss to know what to do with certain thoughts and feelings following the mid-term elections. I am relieved that my wife and I, as well as tens of millions of other Americans, will not have to fear our Social Security Retirement Benefits being cut by 25 percent by the Republican Senate and House. With the Democrats taking over the House, we will no longer have to be scared for the next two years. The Democrats will block any Republican attempt to cut our benefits. The same holds true for those who...
Editor, On behalf of the H. Earl and Margaret Turner Clack Memorial Museum Foundation, The H. Earl Clack Memorial Museum and the Wahkpa Chu’gn Buffalo Jump, I would like to extend a sincere “Thank You” to the residents of Havre, Hill County and the Hi-Line for their support of our efforts to preserve local history. Our Annual Dinner and Meeting was held Saturday evening, Oct. 27. Our corporate sponsors were Independence Bank (Miles Hamilton), the Duck Inn Inc. (Judi and Bill Dritshulas), Gary and Leo’s Fresh Foods (Laura...
Dear Editor, We, the past state presidents of the Montana Business and Professional Women’s Organization, encourage women to consider involving themselves in public service and politics. The culture of our country is changing rapidly, leaning away from ethics and truth. The only way we can change that is to continue to work respectfully for morality and civility. It has taken decades to earn our rights and respect in many circles, therefore we must fight against what we could possibly lose … such as Social Security, Med...
Editor, Expanded and Improved Medicare for All has benefits so clear and impressive, it is absurd for any informed American to not insist on congress implementing H.R. 676. The U.S. spends twice as much per capita on health care as other industrialized nations, yet ranks near bottom on nearly all health indicators. Today, 30 million Americans still have no health insurance and another 40 million are underinsured. Medical bills are responsible for most bankruptcies, even in families with health insurance. Prescription dugs...
Editor, My name is Raymond Nelson, a 1964 graduate from Havre Central High and 26 1/2 year Navy veteran. I was a resident of Montana from 1946 to 1980. It was then I changed residency to South Carolina where I was stationed and bought a home. I am a registered Montana purple heart recipient. The above mentioned background, I believe, justifies my right to voice my opinion. I am currently back in Havre to celebrate my mother’s 94th birthday. My current residence — since 2001 — is in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina. What...
Editor, Our Great Northern Fairgrounds holds a special place in everyone’s heart. Not one of us who has been here long does not have a fond memory of the fair or using the grounds in some way. It may be 4-H, rodeo, derby, Indian relay races, auctions, car shows, Rod Run, the beer gardens — whatever it is, the fairgrounds is the heart of our community. We simply do not adequately fund our fairgrounds. It is impossible to make improvements with the limited funding available. Therefore, every year our fairgrounds becomes mor...
Editor, I grew up in eastern Montana, swimming in the Missouri River and Fort Peck Reservoir. Water was, and is, a significant part of life for me. I feel very fortunate to have been able to stay in Montana throughout my life; and clean water is something we sometimes take for granted in rural places such as this. My husband and I are raising our children in Montana for many reasons, and clean water is one of them. Now living in western Montana, every summer, we’re out on the rivers and lakes near our home and the kids are p...
