Editor, The Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribe Water Compact took over a decade to negotiate with water users on and off the CSKT nation. The CSKT will protect the rights of water users across Montana. It passed the Montana Legislature with bipartisan support and was signed by the governor in 2015. All major ag organizations support the CSKT. The first letter I sent as president of Montana Farmers Union was to Sen. Steve Daines asking him to reintroduce the CSKT Water Compact. Sen. Jon Tester had introduced the CSKT...
Editor, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to all the volunteers that help with the blood drive that takes place at the St. Judes Parish Center every other month. Since the drive is also held during the school year months of January, March, September and November the cooks have to rearrange their schedule to serve the school lunch. It is much appreciated for the canteen volunteers to be able to use the kitchen to serve the donors a snack after their donation. Those organizations serving the canteen...
Editor, It was with amusement that I read the Havre Daily News article Oct. 7 quoting Rep. Jacob Bachmeier, D-Havre, basically blasting Public Service Commissioner Randy Pinocci for having an opinion Bachmeier didn’t like, and expressing that opinion. For those of you that don’t know Randy, he is anything except unopinionated. He delivers on his promise to be non-partisan in attacking anyone suspected wrongdoing. I am a lifelong Democrat and proud of it. I even supported Randy’s opponent in the last election. But havin...
Editor, On 7 December, the Pacific Junction Railway Club at the Havre Rail Museum will honor Eldon Mooney. Eldon moved to Havre from Billings, where he worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad the Burlington Northern Railway. In Havre he worked for the Burlington Northern as well. Eldon loved trains and loved his job. At home, he constructed a model railroad literally encompassing all the rooms of the basement. The guest book lists hundreds of names. During retirement, he was one of the founding members of the Pacific...
Dear editor: I was very pleased with Ila McClenahan’s interesting account of her teachers at the one-room elementary schools across north-central Montana. She was a student at Staton Coulee School while I was a student at rural Burnham School during my lower elementary grades. Donna Van Wechel and Esther Naber were both teachers at the school I attended during different years. Both were life-long friends. While I didn’t have Mrs. Van Wechel for a teacher, one of my lower elementary level teachers was Esther Naber. Just as...
Editor, The members of the Havre HIgh School speech and debate team want to thank everyone for stepping up and helping us by judging at our invitational tournament Saturday. Many of our regular judges took time from their Saturday to come and rank students from 16 schools, including Havre, as they competed in 17 different events, joined by several people who were judging for the first time or returning to judge after being out for several years. We had some issues that slowed down some of the rounds, and the judges seemed to...
Editor, “At long last, have you no sense of decency left, Sir?” Such was the question asked of Sen. Joseph McCarthy during a Senate Committee hearing he was conducting. The questioner was the U.S. Army Chief Counsel Joseph Welch, and, to his credit, it appropriately began McCarthy’s ignominious crash to the dustbin of hateful and unworthy politicians who have first earned our trust and then violated every aspect of their oath of office. And yes, the same question could be appropriately asked of President Donald Trump. With...
Editor, Tuesday, Oct. 22, is International Stuttering Awareness Day. Stuttering is the only disability people still laugh at but we’re working to change that! Just over 70 million people around the world stutter, including more than 3 million Americans. Most people know someone who stutters, but few understand the condition, what causes it, and how it is treated. Many famous people, including actors, singers, statesmen and athletes are among those who stutter. One in five children stutter for a time during their d...
I would like to make the following statement regarding my legal situation, although I will not comment directly on any legal pending matter, I can comment in regards to my probation violation. Any questions regarding pending charges need to be directed to my attorney Jason Holden at Faure & Holden Law Firm in Great Falls. Over the past two years my family and I have experienced many impactful circumstances and situations, A near-death frost-bite incident, a loss of our family business due to fire, hydro nephrosis of my...
Editor, In regards to U.S. Army veteran Alfred Shryer receiving the Bronze Star for saving the Army money: I am veteran of the Vietnam era and was one of the fortunate ones who never set foot in Vietnam. When I read the article, I was glad to see him recognized, but inside I was angry. Shryer deserves an award but not the Bronze Star. There is a whole wall of soldiers in Washington, D.C., who have Bronze Stars or even higher decorations. Through my years, I’ve met and worked with Vietnam vets who earned Bronze Stars. They d...
Editor, I am someone who works a full-time job and is pursuing higher education via the internet. Without access to Montana State University Billings’ online program, or without adequate internet access, I would not have been able to continue my education. I strongly support the principles of network neutrality, which prohibit internet providers from blocking or unfairly restricting a consumer’s access to the internet. The Oct. 1 story in the Helena Independent Record, “Court: FCC can dump net neutrality, but can’t bar sta...
Editor, I was vacationing in Havre in August when I experienced a medical issue. I went to the Northern Montana Hospital to seek remedy and received the best medical care I’ve ever encountered. After a few tests, the emergency room physician, Dr Chip Smith, immediately recognized the potential severity of my condition and required overnight observation, along with intravenous fluids and antibiotics. By the next morning, (with continued tests) the hospitalist, Dr. Carrie Lien, had communicated with a specialist in Billings and...
Editor, Loss of life from a vehicle crash has a devastating impact on families and friends of the victim. A loved one is suddenly no longer with us. It has become a practice for people who have lost loved ones due to a fatal crash to express their grief by placing a memorial within the highway right of way near the crash site. While both The American Legion and Montana Department of Transportation acknowledge the need some people feel to express themselves in this way, the placement of private memorials within a roadway’s r...
Dear Editor, This railroad-related letter comes for two reasons. First, I want to thank you and your staff for commitment to reporting on Amtrak issues and for supporting efforts to re-staff Montana ticketing locations and for preservation of long-distance passenger service. Sadly, ticket agents haven’t been put back on their jobs yet. And, even though Richard Anderson, Amtrak’s CEO, said in a U.S. Senate committee session this summer he felt “there are historically important trains in the long-distance network we shoul...
Editor, Having William Perry Pendley as acting director of the Bureau of Land Management, which manages more public land than any other federal agency, is like the proverbial henhouse-guarding fox — on steroids. Pendley (whom I’ll refer to as WPP, which reminds me of WMD) has been a very public and strident opponent of public lands and has called for them to be sold off. His beliefs go against the interests of Montanans, who greatly value their public lands and want them to remain public. You don’t want them to become the d...
Hunting and shooting is a family tradition for us. First our children and now our grandchildren learn how to handle a firearm, they learn maintenance and proper safety. They respect firearms. They have the right to carry on this tradition — a right given to them in the constitution. Taking away gun rights is not the answer. Guns are not the problem — people are the problem, evil and sometimes mentally unstable people. A gun in itself is an inanimate object that is controlled by, you guessed it, a person. If criminals wan...
I wish I could say I was bewildered with Republican “logic” with firearms in objecting a free city in a free state (we are free aren’t we?) to pass background checks to curb the ease of exchange of dangerous weapons within its city limits, but nothing surprises me about this political party anymore. LR-130 is their answer in deciding who has rights and for which part of the Constitution to read, interpret and adhere to. There is a state Republican from Bozeman who must pack heat to feel safe, advocating for this legis...
Editor, This letter is in regards to an article that ran in the Havre Daily News Aug. 15, 2019, Page A3. Congratulations to the Montana State University alumnus and faculty member for winning a regional Emmy award. I am sure their parents are very proud. We have a son, Ryan Widdekind, who also won a regional Emmy award in 2017, presented by the Northwest Chapter of he National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in Seattle. Ryan grew up in Havre, graduated from Havre High and from the University of Montana with a...
We want to congratulate Friends of the Havre Animal Shelter for hosting the second annual, and very successful, Woofstock. We are very grateful to the Friends for allowing us, the Havre Dog Park Club, to have a fundraising table at the Pepin Park event. Thanks also to the many people who bought our T-shirts and bandannas or donated money to help us open Havre’s first dog park. It’s been brought to our attention that some people thought Woofstock was a fundraiser for the dog park, and we want to make sure everyone knows that W...
Dear Editor, The Havre Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all those who participated in the new Biz and Brews event last weekend. The goal was to encourage shopping locally and it was a success! Thanks to the businesses that had drink stops: Havre Elks Lodge #1201, Cavaliers, Montana Country Boutique, Norman’s Ranchwear and Vizsla Brewery. Thanks to the sponsors of the raffle prizes: Triangle Communications, Cape Air, Duchscher Kapperud Insurance, Independence Bank, Boyce and Berry Flowers and American Solution f...
Editor, “In the last few years, it has become increasingly clear that soon some president and some Congress must face the inevitable task of deciding whether or not the objective of a quality environment for all Americans is a top-priority national goal which takes precedence over a number of other, often competing, objectives in natural resource management and the use of the environment.” So said Sen. Henry “Scoop” Jackson in 1968 when explaining the rationale for National Environmental Policy Act — NEPA. Congress a...
Dear editor, I am trying to locate a yearbook from 1938 for Havre High School. It is the year my late father, Jim Leeds, graduated. My family is putting together a book of memories about him and we would love to include parts of his high school experience. Unfortunately, the only yearbook I could find for Havre High School online was from 1937. I hope this is successful because I would love to see that yearbook! Apparently, my dad was a pretty big man on campus. You would never know it because he never talked about himself....
Editor, They told us if we got educated then we would see success in our lifetime. Yet, more than 44 million Americans have student debts that combine to total $1.5 trillion. Having to borrow money for school is stressful enough; abusive debt collection practices don’t help. And now the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is seeking to increase harassment of graduates over their debts. The CFPB wants to allow debt collectors to email and text consumers without consent, while also calling up to seven times per week per d...
Editor, The Chinook Community Blood Drive was another success. We collected a total of 46 pints on a goal of 40. Great job Chinook! Each donation can save up to three lives. Because of your generosity, 126 lives will be saved. Kurtis Slaughter was a first-time donor at this drive. The canteen was hosted by the Presbyterian Church and the Zion Lutheran Church. The sandwiches and sweet treats were, as always enjoyed by all of our donors, volunteers and guests. We are so happy to have you as part of our team in this important...
Editor, “Havre, it’s the People” was brought to light once again this past week. Last Wednesday, Gary & Leo’s experienced an electrical fire in our refrigeration compressor building. The IGA and HealthMart crew, led by Brenda Friede, assistant store manager, quickly assessed the situation and jumped into action. Because of their efforts, our customers were evacuated and most all our perishable product was protected and saved. I’m also happy to report that no one was injured. In addition to that, we were fortunate enough to...
