All you have to do is bring a slow cooker full of your homemade soup, chili or stew to Old Station Brewing Co., 140 First St. in Havre, at noon April 4. I want to give a shoutout to the Havre Daily News photographer, Colin Thompson. He is the one walking the sidelines for two hours during our football games up and down the Hi-Line. He is the one who is crouched under the basketball hoop to catch those shots of your young people’s efforts every week. You see him in the background packing his large bag and one, two and usually three cameras. He must live out of his car to be at all the games, school functions and community events to cover our stories. I can’t wait to visit the...
Editor, The Friends of Beaver Creek Park was organized in December 2011, to help support our beloved park in the Bear Paw Mountains. We strive to assist in off-setting costs associated with maintaining such a large, beautiful facility, and it is through volunteer efforts that we can support the recreational facilities available in and around the park. It is at this time that we look to you to join us in our efforts and invite you to attend our next meeting in April. Exact date and location to follow. For more information,...
Dear Editor: I read the Republican administration’s budget proposal for 2021 — https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/budget_fy21.pdf . It cuts programs essential to our health, economic well-being and communities. Please support the National Park Service, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Land and Water Conservation Fund, also the Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act and Migratory Bird Treaty Act. With our growing population, for example, we need mor...
Editor, Contrary to claims made by some opponents, the Montana Water Rights Protection Act introduced by Sen. Steve Daines and supported by Sen. Jon Tester, is not only bi-partisan, but has tremendous benefits for water users both in Lake County and across our state. The MWRPA protects water users and well owners in our county by defining the federally reserved water rights of the tribes and preventing expensive legal proceedings in the Montana Water Court. In fact, without Sen. Daines’ solution to protect water rights, w...
A Google search or Netflix documentary will tell you, payday loans are predatory. Lenders offer small loans with interest rates averaging over 390 percent. CNBC reports loans in Ohio, Kentucky, Texas, Nevada, Utah and Wisconsin with rates from 500 percent to 600 percent, targeted toward underbanked people experiencing unforeseen financial hardships. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau found that over 80 percent of payday loans were rolled into new loans after two weeks. This catches people in a cycle where little money i...
Dear editor: I hope many noticed the small holiday wreaths that were attached to the downtown stop signs this past Christmas season. I first noticed them when at the intersection of Third Street and Third Avenue. They made me smile. What a fun touch to downtown. The elves that organized the project — as I understand: Kimmi Boyce and Tera Verploegen — truly added a holiday touch on our town. Thank you! Also, thank you to the businesses that filled their empty flower planters with evergreen trees adored with red ribbons and...
Editor, HGTV is taking nominations to “spruce up” a small town at no charge to the town. I think Havre could be a strong contender. We are located in the “Last Best Place.” Many people have heard about Montana but never visited and are curious about it. We have a lot to offer. There are several historic buildings i.e. Masonic building, old U.S. post office, the original F.A. Buttrey home, the beautiful “castle” home on Second Street to mention just a few. We are an economically depressed area with few industries to attract...
Editor, For two weekends in a row Havre has been treated to some pretty good fun and hockey at the Havre Ice Dome. Parking lot was overflowing with supporters of this awesome game. I am pleased to be a resident of Havre and a supporter of Havre Youth hockey. I was so proud to be sitting in the stands first for the high school game, and then for the 10u and 8u games in which my grand kids play. And then for the Providence vs Montana State University game, which my nephew was playing in, who started his hockey in Havre. And...
Dear Editor, I’m writing with heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to our generous community for their support of Toys for Tots second annual event. Toys for Tots was able to partner with The Salvation Army this year to identify families in need. We were able to provide toys for 73 children; nearly double what we did the year prior. In addition, we anticipate further growth in the coming year. Special thanks goes out to Pacific Steel and Recycling, Independence Bank, Triple Dog Brewing, Bergren Transmission and Helmbrecht P...
Dear Editor, I am writing to thank Havre residents for sharing the true meaning of Christmas with children in need this past holiday season. Because of the generosity of donors in Havre and across the United States, Operation Christmas Child, a project of Samaritan’s Purse, collected more than 8.9 million shoebox gifts in 2019. Combined with those collected from partnering countries in 2019, the ministry is now sending 10,569,405 shoebox gifts to children worldwide. Through shoeboxes — packed with fun toys, school sup...

The theme is Valentine’s Day and the public will find vendors that will have items that make a perfect gift for your significant oth...
Editor, Recently one of our members submitted a letter expressing his opinions about the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame. We disagree with his characterizations of the past few years of challenges that our organization has faced. We have engaged with this member over the past two years to address this, yet he persists in his misperceptions. We are moving forward and I am optimistic about the future. First, we are excited to celebrate our 12th class of inductees into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame in Great Falls February 8, at th...
To the Editor: Steve Daines lied when he recently swore an oath for the impeachment trial of Donald Trump to “do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws.” We all know this because Daines has called Trump’s impeachment a “sham,” elsewhere a “hoax,” and he has insisted, despite all the evidence of wrongdoing, that he is “standing with Trump.” Daines doesn’t even have the decency to pretend that he is going to uphold his oath to be impartial. He doesn’t care what the evidence is for Trump’s abuse of powe...
The Chinook community hosted the American Red Cross Blood Drive Tuesday, Jan. 7. There were 43 individuals that showed up to donate with five deferrals making our total number of pints donated 38 on a goal of 39. We appreciate all who braved the weather to come out and donate. Our next blood drive will be on Tuesday, March 3, from 12:30-6 p.m. at Wallner Hall. You can go online at http://www.redcrossblood.org to schedule your appointment early. We had two first time donors,...
I once read advice from a well-respected author who said writers of fiction should pull details from their memories, not from current experiences. Specifically, she gave the example that winter scenes should be written during the summer months. Her thought process was something about how over time our brains will remember only the most vivid and impactful details, and then writers can tap into those memories to create richer stories. My trouble with the advice, and perhaps...
Editor, My fellow Montanans, I feel compelled to bring to your attention an issue that should concern you. The Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame Board of Directors wasted nearly $1 million in taxpayer and contribution funds and no one has been held to account. The MCHF board has lost the trust and support of Montanan’s. The Membership dues have declined from its peak in 2013 of $41,527 — that was before the news of the Big Timber debacle was made public — to net dues of $13,634 in 2018. Members of the board of directors have decli...
Editor, I would like to take a moment to thank Tyler Smith and his crew for stepping in and finishing the Bullhook Diversion project through Havre. They did their work in a timely fashion and it was done with great professionalism. The work was done under very nasty conditions and completed despite the weather that set against them. As a member of this community that was left high and dry by the former contractor, I would like to say what a privilege it was to have them on this job. Again, many thanks, Tom Kellar...
Editor, Wooden signs, hand-crafted ornaments, homemade dog treats, and much more awaited lucky buyers Dec. 12 at the Sunnyside Intermediate School Trade Fair. Thanks to the community’s stunning generosity, those items and much more — all created by students — raised $3,255 for area organizations. The money will go to starting a food closet at Sunnyside Intermediate, the Havre Public Schools Scholarship Fund, HRDC programs and Friends of the Havre Animal Shelter. Through this success, our students learned how seemingly small...
Editor, A heartfelt thank you to all the businesses that donated to the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce Super Certificate Giveaway and the Kids Baskets held Nov. 30th: Bergren Transmission, Subway, Montana State University-Northern Bookstore, JM Donoven Designs, Gram’s, Ben Franklin Crafts, Norman’s, Emporium, Tire Rama, Havre Optometric, Clausen & Sons, Best Western Plus Havre Inn & Suites, Big Equipment, Bing ’n’ Bob’s, Maurices, Down Under Fitness Center, Ezzies, Pizza Hut, Helmbrecht Studio, Red’s, Northstar Athletics,...
Editor, Montana’s national parks are some of the best in the country, but they desperately need repairs. Parks across our county, like those in Montana, are facing unreliable funding, record visitation and aging infrastructure. That’s why I am encouraged by a bipartisan proposal in Congress to address the $12 billion in national parks deferred maintenance. The Restore Our Parks Act would set aside $6.5 billion over the next five years to fix dilapidated trails, buildings, roads, bridges, monuments and historic markers in our...
Editor, The Blue Pony Booster Club is seeking nominations for the Dr. Jim Elliott Memorial Award. Dr. Elliott’s family gave the first award in 2001, and purchased a plaque that hangs in a trophy case at the Havre High School’s west foyer with the name of each recipient engraved on it. The Booster Club has been given the responsibility from the Elliott family of choosing someone to receive this award. The honor of receiving this award is based on volunteerism, along with personal and/or professional sacrifices made for the...
Editor, The 2019 Community Thanksgiving was a success because of the team effort from the abundant volunteers. During the event we talked about our gratitude towards the anonymous donor. In the kitchen, we reflected on the good works from Gary & Leo’s Fresh Foods for bringing over last-minute groceries, for baking the rolls, the pies and most importantly the turkeys. Thanks to Alan for his quiet steadfast leadership. During the two days of prep we recognize, see and feel the blessings from the St. Jude Thaddeus Parish, t...
To the editor, Havre Daily News: In an article about ridership on Amtrak’s Empire Builder passenger train featured in the Nov. 25 edition of the Havre Daily News, I am quoted as suggesting that the peak ridership for the train at 554,000 in 2008 was due to Amtrak providing enhanced equipment, amenities and promotions of the train. That 2008 ridership (actually 554,266) was up from 437,191 in 2004. The equipment, service and marketing enhancements commenced in 2005. The same article cites Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari t...
