Editor, This was the first Montana People’s Rights Group meeting that I have attended and I was disappointed with the dark bias that was used by HDN to describe it. Conveniently, there was no mention that the meeting was opened with a prayer and also closed with a prayer. One main question at the meeting was what the Constitutions of the United States and Montana really say and how that might differ from what we are being told. Another question was the positives of wearing a mask, as well as the negatives of wearing a m...
Editor, Thank you so much to all our family and friends who supported us in our time of loss and sorrow. Tyler Big Bow inspired those around him and made a positive impact on many of his loved ones, patients and peers. Tyler was a recipient of the Daisy Award for Extraordinary Nurses; he was generous, compassionate and a great listener. Tyler was our hero and the light of our lives; he will be greatly missed by all of us. From the Jordan, Windy Boy and Big Bow Families....
Editor, 480,000 American die from tobacco related causes each year. That’s more than 1,300 people every day. That’s the equivalent of 20 fully loaded schools crashing every day, with no survivors. Tobacco use kills more than AIDS, obesity, alcohol, car accidents, illegal drugs, murders and suicides combined. Vaping is the newest tobacco craze. While the jury is still out, vaping has many of the same dangers as does traditional tobacco. Preliminary data is pointing towards a strong link between tobacco and COVID-19. Tob...
Editor, While we agree with the Letter to the Editor titled Whose Park Is This? published in the Havre Daily News July 24, 2020, we did not write it. A friend showed us a copy and asked if we would like to add our names. It is inappropriate and misleading for the Daily News Editor to list our names first giving the impression we wrote it. The editor should have listed the authors first there by giving them credit for writing this letter and recruiting signatures. Raela Hulett, Havre Courtney Tait, Havre —— Editor’s note:...
Editor, In regards to Diane McLean standing up for our rights, I commend her. She doesn’t have to wait to see what side wins and then jump on board. Go Diane. Dana Alex Phillips Inverness...
Editor, The Hauser family would like to thank all who participated in the recent online fundraiser for our current financial/medical needs. We would also like to thank all of our friends and family and concerned neighbors — near and far — for the steady outpouring of love, and prayers, and cards of encouragement, and texts, and meals and gifts ... it has truly been overwhelming and we have been thanking the Lord for you all! From October 2019 to January 2020, Ted was in and out of the hospital for pneumonia-related lung sur...
In just the past week, Montana has jumped from 1,000 cases to over 2,000. On June 30th we were tracing and isolating contacts for 100 percent of new cases in less than 48 hours, now we’re tracking down and isolating contacts in a timely fashion only 33 percent of the time. According to CovidActNow.org, we are one of 10 states with an “active or imminent outbreak.” Montana has some natural advantages: low population density, no big cities, a sensible governor. We’re not Arizona or Texas — not yet. But we do need action from of...
Editor, I would like to thank you for your recent article in the July edition of Hi-Line Living Magazine regarding one of the Hi-Line’s assets, Fresno Reservoir. However, I think there is a need to clarify a few things. First, when the current FWP biologist came to Havre he wrote in the FWP news-letter that he had inherited one of the best “go to” fisheries for walleye in Montana. This was primarily attributed to fish stocking that started in 2003. He further pointed out the high walleye population, historically high level...
Editor, As a representative of the people of Havre on our non-partisan City Council, Andrew Brekke, you still have a right to your personal political opinions and decisions. In your current role, however, you should expect the same attacks on your expressed opinions as you have launched over the years at reporters for their alleged misquotes. As one of many area newspaper reporters and editors whom you’ve repeatedly vilified, I can commiserate with what you’re going through now. I can’t count the number of anonymous threa...
Why wear a mask? you may ask … Well other than being a menial task ... The virus is quiet, the virus is stealthy Even latching on in secret to the healthy You may think you’ll be fine, you may think it could never be you But when it infects your old auntie you’ll wonder “did I do everything I was supposed to do?” That little cloth square that covers your face Can diminish the prospects of infecting the human race We know they’re not comfortable We know they’re not fun But you can wear it to protect others, just like a gun So...
HELENA — We, the undersigned, are as concerned about the rising number of COVID cases and public health as we are with the economic health of the businesses we represent. As we watch many states around the country mandating face masks for everyone and rolling back re-opening, our Associations are convinced that reverting back to Phase 1 restrictions would bring irreparable harm to thousands of Montana businesses and the tens of thousands of Montana citizens that they employ. Brad Griffin, president of the Montana R...
Editor, A heartfelt thank you to everyone that participated in and contributed to my benefit. I am truly amazed by the constant generosity of our community. We are blessed to live among so many caring and selfless individuals. I would like to extend a special thank you to my benefit coordinators Marge and Barney Leeds and Ron and Laura Lorang, to the many businesses and individuals who contributed auction items, and Nick Siebrasse for being our auctioneer. Also, a big thank you to those who volunteered their time and helped...
Editor, To the individual or individuals who recently mailed an anonymous post card to my home to express their disgust for my Trump flag displayed on the front of my property, I’m unmoved by your attempt at “embarrassing” me into removing it for your sake. Bullying and intimidation tactics do not work on me or other Trump supporters so I would suggest a different tact. But I do understand how frustrating it can be to accept that others do not share my opinions or the choice of leaders I would vote for, as I too have felt tho...
Editor, How have Montanans been sheltered from the corona virus pandemic? By closing campuses early in the pandemic. By ensuring that out-of-staters self-quarantined for 14 days upon arrival. By encouraging social distancing, frequent handwashing and the use of face masks. How do we proceed? By testing for and tracking the infections, especially now, when COVID-19 cases are burgeoning in our beautiful state. And I would think: • By not opening university-system campuses to out-of-town and out-of-state students. • By not sch...
Editor, In March, coronavirus came to Montana, peaking on April 2 with 24 new cases, many in Bozeman, just as cases in Idaho clustered in the Sun Valley ski area. Gov. Bullock wisely acted aggressively, including requiring people entering Montana to quarantine. During April and May Montana’s first wave flattened, and there were zero coronavirus deaths last month. We were and still are the state with the fewest coronavirus cases per 100,000 population, but that’s changing fast. On June 24, we had 23 new cases in Montana, one...
Dear editor, I want to publicly thank Tracey Warburton of Magic Carpet Travel. She worked tirelessly to get me home from Italy when flights across the Atlantic were in short supply and many of those on the limited flight schedule were being canceled. If I recall correctly, five of the flights that Tracey booked for me ended up being canceled, but she pressed on, working from home after her office was closed during the lockdown. (Upon my return home, I completed a two-week quarantine.) You can't imagine the stress I was...
Editor, I am a 89-year-old Korean War veteran. My subject is hate, a self-consuming emotion if there ever was one. It abounds in symbols, swastica, burned-out churches, graffiti. It comes from deep inside ourselves. It is usually something or someone we do not like in ourselves. It consumes itself and the person who provides it. Look at the ashes of hate. What is there, nothing, enough said. Jerry Collins Havre...
Editor, Beaver Creek Park is such a treasure in the region and has such great potential for bringing recreational tourism to Hill County. It’s big business, so it’s shameful that the park is managed by a board that allows activities in the park that diminish it’s natural features and threaten wildlife and habitat. Beaver trapping is just one example. Children, pets and any random animal can be maimed or killed in a trap, yet the potential for tragedy is ignored for the benefit of trappers in a public park. Shouldn’t non-let...
Editor, Much like a virus, disinformation requires a host to survive and, disappointingly, on June 17, 2020, the Havre Daily News printed an opinion piece replete with Oval Office-approved talking points — e.g. draconian, unconstitutional, “COVID pandemic,” etc. Per Johns Hopkins University, as of June 21, there were 8,842,537 confirmed coronavirus cases and 465,462 coronavirus deaths worldwide. There being just one confirmed case in Hill County is no reason to print drivel. Over the past week, coronavirus cases have incre...
I thank God you have no one close to you that is in the “immune compromised risk” grouping. I must read a different Bible than you, even though I sat in the same church you did for a number of years. My Bible says to submit to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake. So these mandates state to socially distance to keep COVID-19 from spreading. As you can see since May 24 — re-opening — 480 cases May 27 to June 16, 638 cases, the numbers have increased dramatically in Montana — and in the U.S. Your freedom oppresses m...
Editor, Shame on you Heidi Hill for praising a business that is not following our governor’s legal and constitutional directives. Not only are his directives not illegal, our state’s Constitution has granted him use of emergency powers. The governor has general direction and control of the emergency resources management within this state and all officers, boards, agencies, individuals, or groups established under the emergency resources management plan. Gov. Bullock issued Executive Orders 2-2020 and 3-2020 declaring tha...
Editor, The Coronavirus Food Assistance Program, or CFAP, gives producers of certain commodities or livestock assistance for losses caused by the coronavirus. The USDA claims that CFAP includes coverage for malt barley, but the rules indicate differently. While on the list of non-specialty crops that are eligible, it is almost impossible to qualify for the assistance. As a farmer, who grows malt barley in the Golden Triangle I know this first-hand. First, almost all malt barley is contracted with a malt company long before it...
Editor, The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is one of the best tools our nation has to combat the coronavirus crisis. Prior to this pandemic, nearly 110,000 Montanans struggled with hunger. With jobs and wages lost, this number continues to rise and families are shouldering much of the burden. In fact, in just six weeks, the state has seen nearly 100,000 new unemployment insurance claims. SNAP is good at feeding people while also feeding Montana’s economy. The benefit is placed on an electronic card for f...
Dear Editor: One way the future will soon be arriving in Eastern Montana is through clean, renewable electricity production. Currently, Orion Renewable Energy is doing the initial site/survey work for the Clearwater Wind Farm it intends to build in Custer, Garfield and Rosebud Counties. Eventually, the revenue generated from the wind farm’s equipment and property taxes will be advantageous for funding county budgets and the state of Montana. Additionally, landowners will financially benefit from lease payments. If you h...
Editor, On Aug. 3, 1949, President Harry S. Truman singed the following into law: “The 14th day of June of each year is hereby designated as ‘Flag Day,’ and the President of the United States is authorized and requested to issue annually a proclamation calling upon officials of the government to display the flag of the United States on all government buildings on such day and urging the people to observe the day as the anniversary of the adoption on June 14, 1777, by the Continental Congress of the Stars and Stripes as the o...
