Editor: A weekend ago, it was a Canadian holiday. So for our weekend, we decided to visit your town, as we do at least three or four times a year. The disturbing thing we did this time is bring our Canadian money instead of changing to American funds. Bad mistake! At least three clerks, at separate locations, looked at my $50 bill and said "what's that?" To which I replied, "That is fifty dollars!" They gave me this stunned look and said, "Oh, we won't take that!" Well let me tell you. I was floored. Won't take it? Is it beca...
Editor: The lawsuit against Senate Bill 423 is an insult to the intelligence of thousands of Montanans. This lawsuit goes against the separation of powers as stated in and by the Montana Constitution, our Montana legislators, the Supreme Court, the Food and Drug Administration, federal law and the U.S. Congress. A supermajority of the legislators voted for SB423. In 2001, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled against the legality of medical marijuana. Federal law prohibits the possession, manufacture and distribution of...
Editor: In cobbling together a flashy story designed to showcase his byline and aid dangerously slumping media bottom lines, Associated Press writer Nicholas Geranios makes the sophomoric mistake of confusing correlation with causation, cites non-credible gadfly sources as "experts," implies the political left is the political right, uses only quotes that support the story spin, and generally violates whatever objectivism may have been taught to him in journalism school. In order to ramp up the octane of this tabloid-like...
Editor: It's show-me-the-money time in national politics when candidates for federal office are scrambling to beat the clock and bolster their campaign coffers. By Thursday, federal candidates must release detailed financial reports with the Federal Election Commission. These reports show campaign expenditures, contributions and cash in the bank. They serve as early-money litmus tests to the strength of a campaign and a candidate's chances. The FEC Report can be a tremendous boost to a candidate's potential success or a terri...
Editor: We would like to say thank you to Doug Fisher and his crew for such a good job they do taking care of Highland Cemetery. He has been such a big help to us. We are working on our family tree and helping other families with their trees. They want pictures of the gravestone, and he always takes the time to help us. There was a family here from Washington state that came to bury their mother, and they couldn't say enough good things about Doug; he was so good to all of them. So we want to say a big thank-you to Doug for...
Editor: Gov. Schweitzer's veto message for House Bill 271 is factually incorrect on several important counts. These obvious inaccuracies do not commend the governor for his knowledge or for his choice of advisers on this issue. HB 271 would have allowed concealed firearm carry ("permitless carry") inside city limits in Montana, as has been the case outside city limits (99.4 percent of Montana) for two decades without any identifiable incidence of problems. Schweitzer claimed that HB 271 would have adversely impacted officers...
Editor: The long Tribal Appellate Court process is trying on a person. It all began in hopes of fairness for all. I filed a protest Oct. 12, 2010. It's become a political game with no real winners, with the cards stacked against us every step of the way, the election committee having the advantage financially and politically. There was a protest in 2005 based on a technicality. That board acted quickly. Within a few days they set up a new election. There was another protest to follow, which went through the judicial system,...
Editor: Wow, Republican legislators have figured out a new way to regulate: take the money out. You can still raise medical marijuana, you just have to give it away. Isn't giving things away what charitable organizations do? Will the Catholic Church and Salvation Army start raising medical marijuana? Too bad they hadn't thought of this in the 1920s. Prohibition would have been so much more successful. Sure, you can serve all the alcohol you want, you just can't take any money for it. Where else might Republicans apply this...
Editor: My girlfriend and I were recently in Havre to visit her parents. Her father is a proud American. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force for a number of years. He displays a U.S. flag in his front yard, and that flag was stolen the evening of April 1. Apparently, someone thought they had a right to enter another's property and take what doesn't belong to them. It takes a real sick individual to accomplish an act like this. To the person(s) responsible for this act: If you are reading this, (if you even know how...
Editor: A year has passed, and I am still flooded with questions from my daughter, Cassi, questions no parent should have to answer. Questions like: "Why mom?" "Why Shaina? Why not me?" "Why am I still alive?" "Why didn't I die?" And as many times as I search within myself, I cannot find the answers. I find myself saying that God works in ways only he can understand. We are all here for a purpose, and at any time He can decide when our journey here is over. I tell her that she has not finished what He has planned for her. We...
Editor: Thank you for your coverage of the St. Paul's School cyclists when they came through Havre a couple of days ago. All those we have come in contact with have been so generous with their time and support of our cause — Ride2Recovery. We would, however, like to mention the generosity of the entire Miller family in Gilford, as they opened up their home to us and made our stay with them most memorable. We hope one day to provide the same for them. Thanks to all who helped us get that much closer to reaching our goal of m...
Editor: On June 18, Kremlin celebrated its first 100 years. A lot of hard work went on in order for this event to happen, and I would like to thank all of those involved or organizing the party. The parade was fun, and I especially loved visiting your Lutheran Church and reading the family history story boards; thank you to the families who generously shared your photographs and stories. The Kremlin Centennial Red Wing crock commemorative bowls were a fantastic idea. I have already used mine several times! Edna Gregory, your...
Editor: This is to express our gratitude to everyone out there who volunteers. You are the heartbeat of the community, giving of your precious time, talents and wisdom. You are a good example to others when you offer a helping hand, create a memory, take tickets, serve for a community event, offer cookies to a new neighbor, answer a phone, mow a lawn, give food or clothing to those less fortunate, offer a ride, rescue a victim, fight a fire, watch children, care for the elderly, donate a product, serve on a committee, open a...
Editor: I am amazed when I drive around town and see U.S. flags flying that are so torn and tattered they should not be up at all. Folks, we are at war. Our men and women are fighting every day for your right to fly that flag. When they come home and drive down the streets of their home town, how sad when they look up and see a ragged flag flying. I know the wind blows a lot here in Havre and flags are expensive to replace, but instead of flying a torn and dirty one, take it down until you can fly one that is in good...
