  • Letter to the Editor - Comey someone to emulate

    Updated May 14, 2018

Editor: I just finished reading James Comey’s “A Higher Loyalty.” It is my latest favorite book, a very hopeful book. “A Higher Loyalty” is he memoir of an honorable man making hard choices, following his principles and learning from his mistakes. In this era where celebrities are famous for being famous, this is the kind of hero you would wish our kids emulate. Bonnie Mosbrucker Havre...

  • Letter to the Editor - Where does Tester stand?

    Updated May 10, 2018

Editor, Several weeks ago, I called Sen. Jon Tester’s office in Great Falls with two questions. First, I wanted to know if Sen. Tester had stood during the State of the Union address in January and at which points during that speech. The personable young woman on the phone proceeded to tell me the good work the senator was doing on behalf of our Montana veterans. When I reminded her of the question, she assured me she would refer that to Washington. Second question. It was about a week before the confirmation vote on P...

  • Letter to the Editor - MSGA endorsed CSKT water compact

    Updated May 8, 2018

To the Editor: There seems to be some confusion in the PSC District 1 race regarding Montana Stockgrowers Association support of the CSKT Water Compact as it made its way through the Montana Legislature. As we all know the legislation supporting the CSKT compact was subsequently passed and sent on to Congress. Following is some of my testimony before the Montana Legislature at a hearing on Senate Bill 262 regarding the Montana-CSKT Water Compact. “I am here today representing the Montana Stockgrowers Association. I am a r...

  • Letter to the Editor - City needs to clean up fire department administration

    Updated May 8, 2018

Editor, As a former resident, I’ve tried to keep abreast of the local events and happenings, especially when it comes to the functioning of local government and its officials. From what I’ve seen lately, I’m disappointed in the functioning of the city, especially as it comes to its relationships within the Havre Fire Department. Over the past three years, since Mel Paulson moved up in rank and eventually took over as chief, the fire department has had an unusually high turnover rate. At least 11 firefighters have left for d...

  • Letter to the Editor - Thank you for support of Clack Museum

    Updated May 7, 2018

Editor, April 28, the Friends of the Clack Museum hosted the Third Annual Historic Tea for the purpose of raising funds for the New Havre History Center’s building projects. On behalf of the H. Earl Clack Memorial Museum Board of Hill County and the H. Earl and Margaret Turner Clack Memorial Museum Foundation, I would like to express our deep appreciation to the many, many women and men who helped make this memorable afternoon tea a huge success. The Afternoon Tea was co-chaired by Judy Ward and Karen Vosen. The appointed t...

  • Letter to the Editor - Vote for Williams in primary

    Updated May 7, 2018

Editor, In the upcoming June primary election, Montana voters have the opportunity to select Kathleen Williams, an experienced, proven candidate for our U.S. House seat. She is the only Democratic candidate with elected office experience. As an avid outdoor enthusiast, Kathleen will work to preserve and protect sustainable access to Montana’s public lands. Kathleen’s approach to problem solving is one of respect and fostering bipartisan relationships. It’s time we return to governing with ethics and finding common ground. She...

  • Letter to the Editor - Russ Tempel brings experience to SD14

    Updated May 4, 2018

Editor, In my eight years in the State Senate, one thing became abundantly clear. With the current short term limits on Legislators, a candidate’s level of experience has become extremely important. When Russ Tempel was appointed two years ago with just a few days’ notice to fill the vacant Senate District 14, it gave me great comfort to know that he was bringing 18 years of experience in County Government to the position. That experience paid off when Russ was assigned to two of the Committees that I served on myself for...

  • Letter to the Editor - Cook best choice for PSC

    Updated May 4, 2018

The choice is clear in my mind between Randy Pinocci and Rob Cook for PSC as I have dealt with both men in the House Fish, Wildlife and Parks legislative committee. Mr. Pinocci asked me to help gather information in the surrounding states concerning the regs. On crossbows. I did extensive research only to find out he never gave it out to the other committee members. Randy put in an amendment to allow disabled veterans to hunt with a crossbow, then when it came up for vote, he voted against it. Sounds like Pinocchio to me....

  • Letter to the Editor - Trapped by ambush in the opioid crisis

    Updated May 4, 2018

Dear editor, I don’t like traps. I don’t appreciate an ambush. Right now millions of Americans, some say up to 5 million, are trapped and being ambushed in the opioid crisis. I listened to a woman tell her story the other night. She spoke about how she moved into the world of drugs much the same way that we see depicted on television. It seems glamorous. It seems like all successful people do it. They drink and smoke and eventually take drugs. That’s when the trap is sprung, of course. She told us about the pains and loss...

  • Letter to the Editor - Pinocci is the best choice for PSC

    Updated May 3, 2018

So often we voice our opinions expressing how imperative it is to elect good people into office. We talk about the presidency, we talk about our national senate and congress, we even talk about electing people with integrity to our state legislature. But what about our Public Service Commission? We hardly think about the PSC but it is just as vital as the other publicly held offices to have someone who has integrity and strong conservative values. We have known Randy Pinocci for over 20 years. He is a man of high moral...

  • Letter to the Editor - They live in our House and our country

    Updated May 2, 2018

Editor, I have no trepidation in writing this letter to vent a few things that are very unnerving to me in Washington, D.C., specifically, the incidents that continue to proceed every day with President Trump and the many agencies that deal with our government welfare. When are all of those Cabinet secretaries going to realize that, thank God, we have some government oversight on what’s being spent and said, etc. I’m a veteran in a small town, in failing health, and I can tell you our clinic does the best it can without a d...

  • Letter to the Editor - Fight losing Amtrak ticket office with a vengeance

    Updated May 1, 2018

Dear Editor: I am writing from Vermont but subscribe to a news service carrying Amtrak news, therefore have read the article in your paper about the pending ticlet office closure. I am also a member of the National Association of Railroad Passengers, or NARP. I do appreciate the train service and I have been a passenger aboard the Empire Builder plus other long-distance trains. The reason I am writing is to just recommend that perhaps your mayor or other city officials connect with Amtrak and strongly argue about what they...

  • Letter to the Editor - Stop radioactive dumping in Montana

    Updated Apr 9, 2018

Dear Editor: “Obfuscation” – to make obscure or unintelligible. Gov. Steve Bullock and his party have been considered very environmentally conscious, but it seems they are forging a new direction. North Dakota is not currently allowing the disposal of Bakken oilfield radioactive or hazardous garbage. But the Montana Department of Environmental Quality is moving briskly to welcome a veritable torrent of those toxic materials to a site near a Sidney subdivision and rural school. Imagine having your home on a scenic plate...

  • Letter to the Editor - Kathleen Williams has our backs

    Updated Apr 5, 2018

Editor, I write in support of my legislator, Kathleen Williams as our next congresswoman. Kathleen is a leader, one who understands the need to compromise for the common good. Kathleen has proven leadership, an understanding of the legislative process, having served from 2009-2013. Kathleen has been an advocate, standing up and fighting for Montanans on many issues, whether cancer patients, labor unions, Medicaid recipients, Native Americans, natural resources, outdoor enthusiasts, hunters, gun owners, landowners, farmers,...

  • Letter to the Editor - Thanks for support and interest in Alzheimer's awareness

    Updated Apr 5, 2018

Editor, I’m writing to express my sincere appreciation for the support and interest in our local Alzheimer’s Awareness Event that took place on Feb. 12th. Based on attendance, it is evident that Havre cares as much as I do about the affects of this devastating disease. Sadly, Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States; and of the top 10, it is the only one that can’t be prevented, cured or slowed. Thank you to Havre Daily News for helping me spread the word; there was a lovely article...

  • Letter to the Editor - Assault rifles should be illegal

    Updated Apr 5, 2018

Editor, I am a 10-year-old fourth-grader. For the last year I have been learning how to target shoot with my gun. I have a .22 short rifle that is pink. My dad bought the rifle for me. I have been learning how to be safe with my gun. My dad has been teaching me. I am going to take hunter safety soon. I like target shooting. I might also hunt depending on the animal. I think people should have guns to hunt or target shoot with but not to be able to use them to shoot other people. I don’t think people should have assault r...

  • Letter to the Editor - Awesome winter

    Updated Mar 30, 2018

Editor, What an awesome winter! I love the snow, the way it covers everything and makes it white and clean looking. I love to ice fish and just be out and enjoy life. I especially enjoy being out with the wife and doing it together. However, there have been some glitches. Heavy snow in October causing a lot of inconvenience to a lot of people. But did you notice how most everyone chipped in to help others and be a community? The amount of snow we got this year has put on a tremendous burden on the city crews, the county and s...

  • Letter to the Editor - Working in Helena with past Havre administrators

    Updated Mar 27, 2018

Editor, This past week put me in Helena for an Education Interim meeting. At the meeting was two past administrators of the Havre school system, now executive director of the School Administrators of Montana Kirk Miller and Dennis Parman, now director of the Montana Rural Education Association. As we worked on mental health issues, special education cooperative funding and work-based learning, they both weighed in on their programs feelings. Was interesting to work with Mr. Miller as my wife was teaching in Havre when he was...

  • Letter to the Editor - Blue Pony girls a star in a long winters night

    Updated Mar 20, 2018

Editor, In early December, my wife and I decided to go to the first game of the season for the Havre High School basketball team. We had such a good time, we went back the next night to watch them play again. After the second game we were hooked. We watched a collection of young women play a very good brand of basketball. They not only were very talented but also played as a team that really enjoyed the game and playing together. They were feisty when they needed to be and they were tough when they had to be. They were good...

  • Letter to the Editor - North Central Montana Pheasants Forever benefits conservation

    Updated Mar 20, 2018

Editor, The North Central Montana chapter of Pheasants Forever has been a hub of conservation along the Hi-Line for over 30 years. Thanks to generous support from local communities and hunters, the chapter has funded many projects to benefit wildlife, youth outreach, and hunter access over that time. With funds raised at the 2017 annual banquet, the chapter contributed $20,000 to the acquisition and management of a parcel located along the Teton River near Dutton. This previously private 279 acres is now open to the public...

  • Letter to the Editor - Montana needs access to high-speed internet

    Updated Mar 16, 2018

Editor, According to the Federal Communications Commission’s 2016 Broadband Progress Report, 39 percent of rural Americans, roughly 23 million people, do not have access to high-speed internet. Whether it’s a student taking a class via distance learning, a small clinic practicing telemedicine, or a small business using e-commerce platforms, expanding high-speed broadband access will have incredible benefits for rural Montana. Today in Montana, approximately 50,000 residents are unable to access reliable internet. Even mor...

  • Letter to the Editor - Great Northern Fair reflects on transportation problems

    Updated Mar 13, 2018

Friends and Neighbors Yes, the Great Northern Fair is on the rocks and yes, something needs to be done and I’m confident the community will rise to the occasion. I served on the Fair Board, 26 years, it was the tremendous support of the community that allowed us to achieve that which we did. There is the bigger issue that needs to be brought to the fore. The status of the Great Northern Fair is but one symptom of a much larger problem that Havre and the Hi-Line face. There is little to no growth, Havre has the same p...

  • Letter to the Editor - Come to a wild safari and help Rotary help communities

    Updated Mar 9, 2018

Editor, The Rotary Club is preparing to turn the Big Sandy High School gym into a “Wild Safari!” This will help us forget the cold and snow we have been experiencing. Tickets are available for the “Wild Safari Dreams” Banquet, March 17, and can be purchased at Wells Fargo Bank, The Grocery Store, Ophus Auction Service and Sheehy’s Law Office or your favorite Rotarian. Inflation has not touched the banquet ticket price of $100 per couple. Prices are the same as in 1984. Something new and exciting this year — you will be abl...
