Editor: Legislative Referendum 119 will be on the ballot in the primary election this coming June. At least I hope it will be. This referendum asks voters to decide whether or not they want to elect Montana Supreme Court justices from seven separate districts. How often have you felt that you do not know the candidates for Supreme Court justice well enough to cast an informed vote? The trial lawyers want to keep it that way. They are trying to remove LR 119 from the ballot in June. If Montana were divided into seven Supreme...
Editor: The Keystone XL Pipeline would have pumped billions into a weak economy, dramatically decreased our dependence on foreign oil, and provided an "on-ramp" for Montana and North Dakota oil production that currently lacks infrastructure. President Obama denied the pipeline's permit anyways. And he did so in spite of the reality of the situation. The oil is coming out of the ground one way or another. The alternative to a pipeline is shipping crude by railway or by ship destined to China, which will lead to more spills...
Editor: A sad anniversary has occurred, the 39th of Roe v. Wade. It requires tremendous imagination to comprehend the loss of 50 million-plus individuals. That is more than the combined populations of New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Boston and perhaps a couple more American cities. These losses have occurred in the United States. No doubt some of those terminated would have been contributing citizens, perhaps a Nobel laureate, the discoverer of a cure for all cancer, a community organizer who really gets it,...
Editor: Ken Miller puts God first. So do we. He walks the talk. Ken Miller is 100 percent pro-life at all stages of life. So are we. Ken Miller will stand up to the burgeoning federal government. So do we. He will govern Montana from within our beloved state, as dictated by Montanans, and not be a bedfellow with Washington, D.C., bureaucrats. Ken Miller will stand with other constitutionally minded governors — like Jan Brewer of Arizona — protecting our national borders. So do we. Ken Miller will reform Montana's education sy...
Editor: In September, four of our local licensed day cares were recognized for their excellent work on keeping their children up to date on their immunizations. This month, I am proud to announce that Hill County has done it again, and with our third quarter reviews finished, five day cares are being honored once again for their dedication to childhood immunizations. These day cares received this award because at least 90 percent of their children were up to date on their immunizations. This is a very exciting award, and I am...
Editor: Once again the Havre community and surrounding area has come through to help those in need. The Salvation Army's Christmas Assistance Program and Red Kettle Campaign were great successes this year. Much thanks goes to the community for participating in the Christmas Angel Tree program and Adopt-a-Family program. Many low-income/needy families were helped because of your generosity. Many of the families stated that they couldn't believe that someone cared that they had a nice Christmas We were able to help more than...
Editor: We live by Lincoln-McKinley Primary School, and we are often shocked and upset to see how fast some people drive by here. A lot of the drivers look like young mothers who are taking their children to school. We worry so much about the children who are walking to and from school and the other people in the area. As fast as some people drive, there is no way they could stop if someone gets in front of them. Just this morning, there was a black SUV which raced by here, didn't even slow for the intersection. We would...
Congress needs to do the right thing and fully renew unemployment insurance for 2012 without change. Millions of workers are in the fight of their lives looking for work and are still trying to get back on their feet four years after Wall Street millionaires crashed our economy. Congress should be doing everything it can to help these Americans with their job search and to endure the hardship of unemployment. Congress must fully extend this critical assistance that keeps food on these families' tables and roofs over their...
Editor: Now that the Havre City Council has decided to reconsider its restriction on drivers using cellphones while driving, I think we should look again at Ward 3 Councilman Rick Dow's column explaining his opposition to the cellphone ordinance (Opinion page, Feb. 2). Mr. Dow begins his column with an absurd example: an overworked driver going home warms his ears at a stop light and because his lips are shivering, a cop nearby stops him for cellphone use. A really silly, made-up example. First, it's unlikely that a...
Editor: It happened mid-summer. A member of the Eagles Manor kitchen staff is said to have reported to a coworker, "There is a great big cat out there, and it's too big for me to pet!" The following day, the cat was sighted by Reverend Al Rosgaard. The following week a smaller one was seen by Rev. Rosgaard. After this unusual event, Rev. Rosgaard exercised his poetic license by composing the following verse. Here it is for our reading pleasure. Noel R. Davidson Havre A Cougar Visits Eagles Manor As I gaze out my window's view...
Editor: The Montana State University-Northern SIFE club would like to thank the following bars for helping with a glass recycling project; the Shanty, 15 West, Murphy's Pub and the Gallery. The SIFE club is going to start recycling glass in Havre as a project to help out the community, and we would appreciate help from the community collecting the glass. Recycled glass has many uses. Our SIFE club would like to take these uses and put the used glass to work in order to create a more sustainable community. As part of a...
Major Thomas Brenan Editor: I was reminded by the feature article on the Hi-Line region in the January 2012, issue of National Geographic, about the photo below that Havre readers may be interested to see. Shown is Thomas J. Brennan, who was the trainmaster at Havre in the 1940s, until 1943 when he was swooped up for his experience and knowledge to do something else: leadership of a railway unit supporting Patton's 3rd Army. He was appointed commanding officer of a railway operating battalion that pushed its way across...
Editor: The Montana Republican governor's primary race is heating up with many, many candidates trying to distinguish themselves and rise to the top. The candidates are similar in many ways, especially on the Republican side. All have some kind of previous experience and ideas to get our economy going again and produce jobs. There is one major difference among the candidates, however: Corey Stapleton is the only military veteran. He was officer of the deck and surface warfare officer on the aircraft carrier USS John F....
Editor: For a while now, the Disabled American Veterans van program in Havre has been raising funds to replace the van used to transport veterans to Great Falls and Fort Harrison. Contributions from the Havre Lions Club, Devon Energy, Havre Rifle and Pistol Club, Hill County Electric, Triangle Telephone and Women's Auxiliary of the local DAV have provided a substantial boost. With additional contributions from other local individuals, businesses and groups, our current fund is over $10,000 on the way to meeting our goal of...
Editor: The Giveaway House was faced with the furnace being condemned. Kim Hickman, with Hanson sheet metal and Hickman Inc., stepped up to the plate and donated time and wages to get an updated new furnace for our organization. Without heat we would be forced to close for the winter. Kim also helped seek for others to contribute toward the cost. Thank you Kim for your care and time. We are still short about $400 to be able to pay for this furnace. The only way The Giveaway House operates is by any one donating to our local...
Editor: On Nov. 19 I was taking care of my family's dogs. Somehow the dogs got out of the gate and were on the run. I looked everywhere, and I called the police, the radio station and my family. My family assured me that the dogs would return, but I didn't believe them, so I was going back out to look some more for the dogs. I told everyone who I contacted that the dogs answered to Buddy and Curley, and the address on the tags were for my family, but that I lived on Wilson Avenue. As I was going out the door, there was a...
Editor: We would like to personally extend our gratitude to the Havre community, volunteers and business sponsors for supporting the Havre Food Bank Fundraiser Dinner which was held Nov. 16. We were able to raise more than $1,200 with the dinner admission, silent auction items, raffle and donations. Our venue was St. Jude Parish Center. The space was kindly donated for our dinner. We had volunteer help from the St. Jude Thaddeus Church youth group, along with the Havre High School Key Club. Numerous volunteers from District...
Editor: My wife and I recently returned from our first trip to Washington, D.C. We toured the usual places and were impressed with the monuments and museums as well as the Capitol and White House, but the highlight of my trip was sitting in the Senate Gallery watching Sen. Jon Tester present his Senate amendment, VOW to Hire Heroes, House Bill 674, to the Senate on Nov. 10. This bill is at least 50 years overdue. When I left the service in 1962, I was in a Catch 22 situation where I was unable to put my excellent military...
Editor: The Havre/Hill County Historic Preservation Commission held its monthly meeting on Dec. 13 and during that meeting there was a great deal of discussion about the 2011 limited-edition post office ornament. The reasoning behind ordering only 50 "Numbered Edition" ornaments was that we were working with a limited budget, and we had not anticipated the huge demand by the community. After thoroughly discussing the various options, the commission has voted to issue additional ornaments. These "Second Edition" ornaments...
Editor: Christmas! Bows, bells, trees, gifts, food, family, friends. We all enjoy these things, but Christmas is so much more than that. It is a babe in a manger, shepherds, a star, angels, praise, love. Christmas is God sharing His Son and His love for people. God is still in control of our world. There is still hope and joy and peace because the babe came. Let us thank God and praise Him for His gift to us — Jesus Christ, the Savior. Have a blessed Christmas. Martha Chambers Havre...
Don't widen chasm between rich, poor Editor: If you are concerned about our country's future, act now. By Nov. 23, Sen. Max Baucus and the other 11 members of the supercommittee must submit their proposals for reducing by $1.5 trillion the federal deficit. On the table for cuts is all that we love — national parks, schools, public safety and roads, libraries — and all the government programs that protect our most vulnerable neighbors — Medicaid, SSI, Meals on Wheels, subsidized housing. The result of cuts to our safety-net pr...
Editor: A friend of ours, Angela Morris, has been suffering from severe multiple sclerosis for two-plus years. A benefit dinner will be held, Oct. 29, to raise funds to help with all the financial costs of travel, treatment, etc. As I think about Angela and her upcoming benefit, I'm reminded of our own benefit dinner, held in February 2007, to cover the expenses of our daughter, Tirzah Kaylynn Bergren, who was born four months early, weighing 1 pound, 3 ounces. Our daughter was still in the NICU in Great Falls at the time of...
Editor: As a taxpayer in Montana, I am more than willing to pay taxes to support the university here in Havre. I would, however, like someone in the Montana University System to explain why Montana State University-Northern does not have a full-time professor in physics, philosophy, psychology, music or foreign language, and why the university has refused to hire as full-time faculty the many gifted and knowledgeable Native Americans to teach American Indian studies courses at our university. The local high school offers...
Editor: Eastern Montana Industries in Miles City, which provides vocational and rehabilitation services to people with disabilities, has been selected to participate in the Pepsi Refresh Grand Project. The project that EMI is promoting is to purchase a glass pulverizer to make glass aggregate to sell to the public. EMI will be competing with more than 340 entities for one of 10 $50,000 grants. Voting started Dec. 1 and goes through Dec. 31 and the top 10 vote-getters will be awarded a grant. People can vote daily by signing...
Editor: In the waning hours of 2011 on Capitol Hill, Republican Rep. Denny Rehberg's controversial proposal to slash funds from family planning clinics is just one more needless attack on the middle class and poor that is gridlocking Congress. The cuts are part of Rehberg's fiscal year 2012 Labor, Health and Human Services funding bill introduced earlier this fall, and he's holding firm on his intent to undermine women's health. These clinics serve low-income and under-insured women and their families, screen for cancer and...
