Editor, My name is Samuel Thomas. I am running to give Montana voters a viable alternative to Matt Rosendale, whose views and votes in Congress do not represent Montana values. I’m running because our country is in trouble. We have extremist politicians like Rosendale who voted “no” on the critically important infrastructure package that provided historic investment in Montana highways, roads, bridges, broadband expansion, and water projects, including the restoration of the Milk River Project that provides drinking water...
Dear Editor and the Havre Community, As many of you already know, I am running for a seat for the Havre School Board of Trustees in the upcoming school board election May 3. I have been involved in community building efforts throughout the region for the past 14 years. In my professional life, I served as the commercial loan officer for Bear Paw Development Corp. for six years and have helped local business owners and governments as Brownfields Specialist for NewFields Companies for the past eight years. In my personal time,...
Editor, Teachers are not upset over the four-day school week not passing. They are upset because they feel like the school board and the administration have no respect for their professional input. Comments about not wanting what’s best for the children’s education is untrue. I know 90 percent of the staff would not support a change they believe would negatively impact the students. There was a committee put together to work on a school calendar. This calendar is not the one the committee worked on and wanted voted thr...
Editor, Because of the pandemic, I have been afraid to attend any events, even though I am fully vaccinated. I stepped out of “safety zone” to attend the play at Havre High School, “Anastasia.” Please, please, please support these young adults and go see “Anastasia.” They all worked hard and did a wonderful job. Mary R. Marten, Havre...
Greetings Hill County, I would like to take the time to introduce myself. My name is Lexis Dixon. I am currently employed as deputy clerk and recorder at the Hill County Clerk and Recorder’s Office. I am the accounting clerk, which oversees the budgets, audits, expenditures, revenues and grants. I have experience with the fee and reception book, issuing birth and death certificates, assisted determining herd districts, ownerships, surveys and election duties, as well as supervising and assisting with training new hires. I p...
To the editor, After I read your newspaper report of the Hill County Park Board (discussing grazing on Beaver Creek Park), I find I must agree with Nick Siebrasse about it appearing to be a conflict of interest. Perhaps in the future, those board members directly benefitting on any vote, whether it’s a cabin owner, a grazer, a hay producer or a park permit user, should recuse themselves from the vote to avoid any appearance of wrongdoing. Their opinions prior to the vote are important. Everyone has the right to voice his o...
Dear Editor, Monday, March 7, 2022, I was sworn in as alderman for Ward 1 of Havre’s City Council. I’d like to express my appreciation for all the support I have received. First, thank you to the members of city council who unanimously approved that I fill the open seat for Ward 1. I look forward to working with council members, Mayor Doug Kaercher, department leaders, and the citizens. It is an honor to serve alongside you all. Second, I would like to thank the many members of the public who encouraged me to run, and tho...
Dear people of the Great State of Montana, Hello! I am a third-grade student in Northern Virginia. Our class is learning about the United States, and I will be teaching our school about the state of Montana. In the month of May, I will create a display for our State Fair that I hope will make you proud. Although I have gathered facts about your state from books and websites, I think that I can receive the best information from the people who live there. This is why I am writing to you. I am hoping that you would be willing to...
I don’t claim to have any amazing solutions or answers and honestly any decisions at this point puts everything at risk and is very delicate. Here’s what I can guarantee … Putin is going to take Ukraine regardless of how long or what it takes and make it part of Russia again. So either “the West” does something or that is absolutely going to happen. So assuming that’s a known outcome which is going to happen and sanctions aren’t going to do anything to stop it … I’d say Putin is leaving the West with no choice. Otherwise...

Hello, NAMI Havre has moved to our new office, in the top floor of The Atrium in Suite 408, and we are enjoying the new surroundings. We are inviting the public to come up and enjoy it with us. On Saturday, April 16, we will be having an open house. Come and check us out and we will answer any questions. We are starting four classes in April. They are as follows. Family and Friends is on Wednesday, April 6, for four hours. It is a one-day class. It helps people to understand and cope with mental illness. In Our Own Voice is...
Editor, Putin invaded Ukraine because Ukraine was a democracy. He did it because he is terrified of Ukrainians exercising freedom of speech, press, religion, and association, electing leaders who defy him. If Russians saw Ukrainians freely expressing their thoughts and thriving, Putin knows, they might want the same thing for themselves. They might get rid of him. Putin is invading Ukraine for the same reason he intervened in the U.S. election in 2016, helping Trump get elected. He wants to own the leaders of other...

Coca-Cola High Country, Aquatana, Northern Montana Healthcare, 5th Ave Grind, NorthWestern Energy, Independence Bank, Clausen and Sons, Gary & Leo’s IGA, Master Sports, Northern Alumni Foundation, Tire-Rama, Western Drug Pharmacy, Tilleman Motors, Triangle Communications, Koefod Agency, Ezzie’s Wholesale, DA Davidson, Erickson Insurance, Farm Bureau Financi...
Editor, Heroes, Joe Manchin, Liz Cheney, Kyrsten Sinema, Adam Kinzinger, in Montana, Republican legislators not signing on to audit our 2020 election, former Gov. Marc Racicot — heroes — the courage to do the right thing versus the easy thing. Mitch McConnell recently said his party shouldn’t run “goofballs” for office — neither party should; our country, our state, need fewer goofballs making laws. I’m a D-Lite; I met Marc Racicot in 1988, supported him for attorney general and drove him in the Bucking Horse Sale parade....
Dear Editor: A large-scale competition such as a county spelling bee requires a great team of talented officials, and this year’s 55th Hill County Spelling Bee was orchestrated through a lineup of gifted, dedicated retired teachers, current school teachers/administrators and county officials. Without their help an event of this scale could not be gifted to our students. Crucial financial support for this event was provided by Independence Bank for Chamber of Commerce gift certificates for the top three finishers: $50, $25 and...
Editor, It seems that every day there is news about some Republican elected official going off track with a crazy dispute. Now, Gov. Greg Gianforte has jumped into the fray with a complaint about the use of the word “equity.” The Montana Board of Education has revised its Ethical Standards for Teachers, which it does every five years. The word equity was included in the revision, pertaining to a teacher’s recognition of the need for equity in education. Equity in education is different from equality. A good example of that is...
Editor, Montana’s citizens are as diverse as its landscape, and just as the plains erupt into the towering mountains and cavernous canyons, so too are our neighbors and coworkers equally, and perhaps more so, diverse. From Republicans to Democrats, conservatives to liberals, rural residents to urban dwellers, from timber workers to conservationists, bikers to snowmobilers, anglers to hunters, and ranchers to students, Montana is comprised of a vast scope of ideals and beliefs. And yet, all Montanans are united in one c...
Editor, Recycle Hi-Line is sad to announce that we are no longer able to take any plastics. The global market does not support recycling plastic and too much plastic is contaminated, making it unrecyclable. Here’s the basic problem: All used plastic can be turned into new things, but picking it up, sorting it out and melting it down is expensive. One report states, “A degradation of resin properties and performance occurs during the initial fabrication, through aging, and in any reclamation process,” meaning it can’t be reus...
Editor, I read the Tuesday, Feb. 8, Havre Daily News article covering the Hill County Park Board meeting. The presentation on adding a new loop trail on the Bear Paw Nature Trail near Brough Coulee was exciting. The development of the Nature Trail was a cooperative effort between the Hill County Conservation District, Beaver Creek Park Board, Hill County Commissioners and Havre Lions Club to enhance the outdoor experience in Beaver Creek Park. That trail is used year around and enjoyed by many. I now write this letter because...
The global pandemic has hit Montana as hard as it has anywhere else in the country. Worker shortages, hospitalizations and products that are hard to find and are making things tough on all of us. But it hit the most vulnerable hardest of all. People like me care for the disabled, elderly and others who simply need to be taken care of in their homes. We don’t do this for the pay, which is almost too low to support a family. We do it because it makes our communities stronger and it’s what our clients need and deserve. We do...
When people think of Montana, they think of the outdoors. The state attracts tourists from around the world to witness the beauty of The Last Best Place. Whether you’re a hiker, skier, fishermen or avid snowmobiler, Montana is bound to supply you with outdoor recreation opportunities. Although various groups articulate different visions for the future and conservation of these spaces, it’s common knowledge public lands are important to Montanans. The Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Act takes account of all these ide...
Sen. Daines, you are wrong. The voting rights bill is not what you claim it is, and, in fact, a majority of Americans support it. And please stop saying Democrats are trying to create a federal takeover of elections. Let’s not forget that “your guy,” yes, the former president, drafted an executive order to confiscate all voting machines and planned to use the National Guard to do so. Voter ID? Please, don’t insult our intelligence. In your letter to the Havre Daily News published Jan. 21, you spent several paragraphs in utte...
Dear editor, As businesses and organizations continue to struggle with staffing shortages, the Stuttering Foundation unveiled some good news for employers — according to speech experts, people who stutter tend to show significantly better than average care and perseverance in completing their workplace responsibilities. Stuttering is often misunderstood. As a result, employers may mistakenly pass over qualified candidates who stutter. Now is a good time to hire more people who stutter in the workplace. One percent of the p...
The lodge in Beaver Creek Park is in need of updating and it will take funding beyond what is available in normal financial operation of the Park. There are ongoing efforts to find and secure grants for the needed updates. Grants are not the only way to raise the necessary funds. Anyone with a mailing address or phone number is regularly solicited for money for any number of purposes. However, many of these are not invested in our local area. I can’t help but believe there are 10’s of thousands of dollars flowing out of thi...
Sometimes people will ask me “What does the Foundation do?” To get right to it, the Montana State University-Northern Foundation (aka Northern Alumni Foundation) is the recognized philanthropic not-for-profit organization for Montana State University-Northern. However, that doesn’t really describe what we do. In a nut shell, we encourage donations, process gifts, and manage funds. We host events and we fundraise for both small campus initiatives and large capital campaigns. We sit in countless meeting with the University and...
