Editor: I wanted to take this opportunity to comment on a very special group of people you have in your community at Northern Montana Care Center. My mother, Delores Hutchison, passed away at Northern Montana Care Center on Dec. 9. She had been a patient for the past couple of years and had declined rapidly around Thanksgiving. Although I live in southern California, I was able to visit her in the Care Center. I was deeply touched by the care and attention she was given by the staff and nurses. The staff was very attentive...
Editor: Gov. Bullock could have gone lots of other places, but he went to Colstrip. Beneath massive smoke stacks that have dumped more carbon into our atmosphere than any but a dozen other power plants in the nation, he announced the names of the people he’s asking to come up with a plan to reduce Montana’s carbon emissions. Montana is home to many successful renewable energy projects, like the Judith Gap wind farm and going to any of them might have better suggested an economically vibrant future. Instead, sadly, he cho...
Editor: This year, access to Montana’s natural resources was threatened in Congress by agendas that simply don’t understand our traditions and heritage. The Land and Water Conservation Fund became an unnecessary political football, officially expiring Sept. 30, despite pleas from Republicans and Democrats alike for the program to remain intact. This year our congressional delegation made this issue a top priority. Congressman Ryan Zinke followed through on his unwavering support for the LWCF when he made the tough decision to...
Editor: I wanted to congratulate the Havre wrestlers on their showing at the Tri-State Tournament last weekend in Idaho. This competition is such a huge opportunity for our kids to grow in the sport, achieve a higher level of competition and make a showing to colleges. Kudos go out to the administration staff at Havre High, the athletic director and school board for making this opportunity a reality for the Ponies. What a great support you are for our team to continue to be the powerhouse they are. Good luck for the rest of...
Editor: While anyone can get tested for Hepatitis C, more than 75 percent of adults infected are baby boomers, people born from 1945-1965. Baby boomers are five times more likely to have Hepatitis C. The reason baby boomers have higher rates of Hepatitis C is not completely understood. Most boomers are believed to have become infected in the 1970s and 1980s when rates of Hepatitis C were the highest. Since people with Hepatitis C can live for decades without symptoms, many baby boomers are unknowingly living with an...
Editor: It is after much consideration and thought by Havre Firefighters Local 601 that we have decided to release this statement in regards to the discussion about outsourcing our jobs. As we're sure many of you can imagine we have been bombarded with questions and concerns from people asking about the validity of the topic. We felt that it would be best to address this topic all at once to inform everyone of the facts and alleviate any rumors It is our sincere hope that from this point forward things can be handled...
Editor: I want to express heartfelt appreciation to the wonderful and caring people of Havre who made my short stay as an interim pastor of First Lutheran Church a very wry and meaningful fun-filled experience. Pastor Stan Hoobing Westby...
Editor: I was in town on Saturday. I was doing my Christmas shopping and decided to take the tour of Havre Beneath the Streets. I was impressed with the tour. There is a lot of history there. As I was going through the tour, there was a lady and daughter giving me some information about the underground. I'd like to thank her for what she had said, but I didn't get her name. She said she was a teacher in Havre and she goes to the tour quite often. I'd like to thank her for the information. I travel to Havre quite often....
Editor: Thanks goes out to so many people for supporting the 2015 Community Thanksgiving Dinner. As I reflect on another successful year, my thoughts are this: It takes just one. One conversation with Alan to confirm the commitment to Thanksgiving 2015. One request to the donor to fund the dinner. One phone call to check in with Chef Peter. One phone call to Gus Sharp to secure his support to manage the deliveries. Just one phone call to Gary & Leo’s Fresh Foods to confirm their support to bake turkeys, pies and rolls. J...
Editor: I haven’t seen the crap piled so high since our ranch had a feedlot back in the ’70s. NorthWestern Energy recently commissioned a report by the University of Montana’s Bureau of Business and Economic Research to sue the EPA over its Clean Power Plan. Almost every page of the report is littered with false assumptions, twisted logic and anti-environmental delusion. Contrary to everything Gov. Steve Bullock has said he would do, the NorthWestern report assumes that his Clean Power Plan will cause all the Colstrip units...
Editor: I don't understand the decision of the Montana State University athletic director. As a football coach and a high school science teacher for 28 years, I have seen a lot of ignorant things in football, but he may have just won the grand prize. Coach Rob Ash was hired when the team was in dire straits from the activities of the staff and players that had come to light. This man turned the program into a class act while maintaining a playoff level of play so fast I was truly amazed. He has brought such credibility and...
Editor: The Montana Department of Transportation has recently advertised for a public response to their plan to reconstruct U.S. Highway 2 from Chinook to Fort Belknap. What’s troubling is that once they have completed the project, Highway 2 will continue being a narrow, dangerous highway with no shoulders. And we are supposed to be happy with that, Uff Da. Even worse, MDT boasts that it will extend the life of the highway, which means MDT has no plans to construct an adequate, safe highway. Friends and neighbors, we need t...
Editor: A sincere thank you goes to the gentleman who found my wallet at North 40 on Sunday at about 12:30 p.m. I asked the cashiers your name, but they didn't think to ask you, so thank you for your honesty — much appreciated. Dona Woods Havre...
Editor: We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the huge number of people who came to the Great Northern Fair Board meeting Tuesday, Oct. 20, to voice their support for Mike Sharp and the Great Northern Fairgrounds. After reading the Wednesday, Oct. 21, Havre Daily News article “Sharp quits as fairgrounds manager,” we are very disappointed with the article that did not include two hours of comment. These comments included input from the people who have the food booths, the people who have exhibit booths, th...
Editor: Through independent research and analysis, Montana Stockgrowers, the Montana Farm Bureau and the Montana Chamber of Commerce have determined that the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Water Compact is in the best interest of Montana. These groups prioritized the needs of Montana business and industry, farms and ranches, and the families they support over out-of-state agendas. The 2015 drought in western Montana provides an opportunity to apply the provisions of the Water Compact to all affected parties before final...
Editor: The Montana Republican Party claims a First Amendment right to associate in a closed primary election where only registered Republican voters are allowed to cast a ballot. The Republicans can holler all they want, but if they don’t put it in writing — they have no such right. The U.S. Supreme Court said that political parties have a constitutionally protected right of political association under the First Amendment when the party states its associative rights in its rules [450 U.S. 107, 122(1981)]. So what do the Rep...
Editor: Each day I am honored to provide care to individuals who live, work and play in our community. Some of these individuals, who are our friends, family and neighbors, delay getting medical care due to having little to no money and a lack of insurance. With the passage of the Montana Health and Economic Livelihood Partnership Act by our Legislature, this could soon change. This was a bill filled with compromise and is a bill of hope for many. I applaud Rep. Bruce Meyers and Sen. Jonathan Windy Boy for their willingness t...
Editor: For the past number of years, the Buckle Up Program has provided education and awareness in seat belt safety and proper car seat installation to individuals in Liberty, Hill, Blaine and Chouteau Counties. As of Oct. 1, the Hill County Buckle Up Program will be coming to an end due to loss of federal funding. Eight coordinator positions have been eliminated out of 12 due to this cut. As a coalition, we believe and have voted to continue with education and awareness with members of the coalition stepping up to fill in t...
Editor: As with so many activities that take place in Havre, Sounds on the Square wouldn’t happen without the volunteer help and the financial generosity of those believing in keeping Havre a great place and offering some fun activities like Sounds on the Square. Thanks to NorthWestern Energy for your generosity this year through your sponsorship of Sounds on the Square. The company's willingness to support community activities such as the summer music series at Town Square is very much appreciated. We also thank the S...
Editor: I would like to acknowledge a very special place here at Rocky Boy — the new veterans cemetery along Laredo Road. I drive by it twice a day, in the morning coming to Rocky Boy and in the late afternoon returning to Havre. For me this has become an awesome sight to see the five flags waving in awesome salute. Sometimes they are standing "at ease," but alway in honor to those who lie buried here. One of those things that Rocky Boy can truly be proud of is the large number of men and women who have served or who are c...
Editor: Corey Lloyd, 17, of Havre, was awarded his Eagle rank Thursday, Aug. 13. Corey restored the Hidden Hallows campsite south of town in Beaver Creek Park. Several hours were spent removing overgrowth, laying cement pads, building shelters and picnic tables, constructing a new outhouse and building new fire pits for each of the three new camping areas. The Eagle rank is the highest rank a scout can achieve. On average 4 percent of Scouts are awarded this rank. Troop 1438 would like to congratulate Corey on this huge...
Editor: I have just finished reading the front page article on “Sounds on the Square drinking OK’d” (Havre Daily News, page 1, Wednesday, Aug. 5). Why must the good people of this community feel that alcohol must be present at every event we have? How does this look to our youth and nonalcoholic friends. We complain that we must stop underage drinking, but yet support this kind of behavior. We have open container laws for a reason. You don’t need alcohol to have fun. I have been a Hi-Line resident my early years before...
Editor: When we talk about health care, it’s important to remember that even though more Americans have health insurance coverage these days, millions of people still struggle to find a place to go for regular preventative care. A key part of the solutions lie in our nation’s community health centers which have provided quality, affordable care for 50 years. Health centers like ours across the country save the U.S. health care system more than $24 billion every year in reduced overall costs from preventable hos...
Editor: The reason for this letter is to personally thank my committee members for more than 15 years of dedication to our Town Square project. Havre ... did you know that this committee of people mow, clean and maintain our community Square each week? A big thank-you goes out to David Clausen, Tracy Job, Rick Sedahl, Garrett Edmonds, John Mclain, Jennifer Kinsella, Tim Callahan and Debbie Vandeberg. Havre ... did you know that for the month of July, our park is mowed by the staff from Mastersports. A big thank-you goes out...
Editor: Bullhook Bombshells Havre Roller Derby League would like to let the community know what has been in the works and what we have already accomplished. We were founded in November 2014, and a wild idea fueled by our ambition has become a local sport that has not only found a home, but community support followed by a steady increase in participants. We would like to graciously thank our official sponsor, the Havre Eagles Club 166 for its generous donation of $225 for gear. We were able to suit up a couple more girls and g...
