After losing his sense of purpose following the death of his wife in 2013, Everett Tyrrel said he began to get his purpose back thanks to fitness trainer Tami Nystrom of Physical Therapy Down Under and Fitness Center in Havre - including hiking miles of trail in Beaver Creek Park and other spots in the Bear Paw Mountains. "For three days a week for two years, I had Tami as a trainer and mainly, for me, was as a listener. After my wife passed away, I needed someone to talk to...

Out our way, most cattle are raised in a fenced pasture. Granted, the area is still huge and takes some riding and exploring to find them all, but we know they are there. However it wasn’t always like this, and in some places it still isn’t. South of town and bordering the Chippewa Cree reservation is Beaver Creek Park. Every year, for a time, it is free range and the cattle wander at will. Come round up time, there is no guarantee where one will find them. Now, it happened one day that I was hauling Doc out to an old hom...

With the marathon finally set to go, Julea Robbins, from the Havre Area Chamber of Commerce which is putting on the marathon, is ready to get it started. "It feels fantastic and I think having that extra year definitely gave us the push that we need to make...
Decisions are not easy sometimes, and late Monday night, I was facing a tough call. No, it wasn’t some monumental quandary I was in, but it was a decision on whether or not to put myself in a possible jam. And in the end, I guess you can say, I chickened out, or decided not to find out if I would end up in one or not. You see, at 11:59 p.m. Monday, registration for the first annual Bear Paw Marathon expired. No, I wasn’t considering running in the marathon, or the half mar...

The Hill County Park Board's Rules and Regulations Committee met Wednesday night to discuss beaver management in Beaver Creek Park, a long controversial subject, and local wildlife experts invited to the meeting advocated for a more comprehensive approach to beaver management, not just lethal trapping. This is the third in a series of meetings meant to evaluate what the Hill County Park Board should do to manage beaver in the park. The speakers at the meeting were Amy...
In the wake of announcements about the dispersal of over $28 million in American Rescue Plan funds to counties and cities across north-central Montana little guidance has been issued by the federal government about how these funds can be used. While some county- and city-level officials in the area have general ideas about where this money will be spent, few concrete plans are being made because so little is known about how the money can legally be spent. “We know we need to be accountable for how it’s spent and we have not...
The Hill County Park Board’s Rules and Regulation Committee is holding the third meeting Wednesday in a series of meetings on a controversial topic — beaver management in Beaver Creek Park. An agenda sent by Hill County Commissioner Mark Peterson says three speakers will present at the meeting, which starts at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the 4-H Chuckwagon on the Great Northern Fairgrounds. Peterson said this morning that while the speakers have been confirmed, he is unable to release their names. Use of trapping to control the beave...
Hill County Public Health Director and Health Officer Kim Berg said at a meeting of county officials Thursday COVID-19 continues to affect younger people in the community as cases steadily continue to crop up. Berg said a possibility exists that these latest case may be the result of a variant, not just because of the age group it affects but because there seems to have been a noticeable shift in symptoms. She said fewer and fewer people seem to be losing their sense of taste, but chest congestion and breathing difficulties...
At the May Park Board meeting we were told that the park will continue to lethally trap beavers until the “population is under control.” When questioned “what will be the standard for the population being under control,” other than a comment about activity, there was not an explanation of what the standard and or measure of population will be. When further pressed about the consensus of the board considering wildlife or wildlife habitat in decisions for the park, the response from the chairman was: It will be conside...
Editor, I have been following the debate over the beaver situation in our Hill County Beaver Creek Park. We are losing a tremendous amount of trees and access to the creek itself by a common rodent. The beaver. Now that the anti-trapping people and other humane special interest groups have been called to graciously help solve our problem there have been many questions left unanswered. 1. How much will these Beaver Deceivers, pond levelers, cost? (I was told it was $12-15,000 each. 2. What is the effective range of a Beaver...
As local conflict over the future of beaver population management in Beaver Creek Park continues, a billboard sponsored by Trap Free Montana Public Lands has been set up on U.S. Highway 2 at the east end of town. The Hill County Park Board's Rules and Regulations Committee has been holding a series of meetings meant to gauge the public's opinion on the long-controversial issue of beaver trapping, which some argue is the only efficient way of controlling beaver populations in...
Editor, Hopefully most of the citizenry of Havre have become aware of the billboard along the highway east of Havre. If not, please check it out. The billboard was paid for by an anti-trapping organization, “Trap Free Montana Public Lands” based in Hamilton. Their anti-trapping activity has been concentrated mostly in the western part of the state. It seems coincidentally suspicious that a billboard with a message to “Protect Beaver” appears in Havre while meetings addressing the management of beaver in Beaver Creek Park th...
