Last season saw the Havre High boys take some big steps forward. Yet, they fell short of their ultimate goal, which was to reach the Class A state tournament. Now in 2020-2021, HHS has been looking to not only get some good standing in ther Northeastern A, but to push past the divisional woes. That sort of thing is not easy in the Eastern A, but the Ponies are ready to step up and stand out, even if COVID-19 puts a bit of a question mark on the season. That season will start...
When the clock strikes midnight tonight, and 2020 ends, there will certainly be cause for celebration. No question, we’re all looking forward to this year being over. And not only are we all looking forward to 2020 being over with, we’re certainly looking forward to better days, a brighter future, a future without COVID-19 being front and center, a future without civil discourse, a new future with less anger, less anxiety. Yes, we all hope better days are ahead. In trying to...
After the 2019-2020 season ended abruptly, the Havre High girls basketball team was left with a tough situation, as they were stripped of a shot at placing in the 2020 Class A State Tournament due to COVID-19 cutting it short. The Blue Ponies once again made a strong run to and through the postseason, but this year, they aim to get back to the top of Class A once more. And that quest starts this weekend in the Blue Pony Corral. With a full head of steam and a lot of new faces...

This week between Christmas and New Year’s Day is a strange time, a time when every day feels like Sunday. This morning, I made a big mistake. I checked the temperature. At 10:00 it was 42! That means in the coldest hour of the early morning, it was near freezing. How can that be? It didn’t feel that cold when I walked out to my bodega. I wasn’t cold until I looked at the thermometer on the outer wall. My ceramic heater is swiveling back and forth, the setting on Hi. I’m n...
Now, after a year, the numbers have become numbing. We can’t blame the media, who were simply doing their job by reporting facts, but as thousands became hundreds of thousands it became impossible to maintain a sense of scale. What exactly do 300,000 dead Americans look like? For a few naïve months, rural Montana managed to convince itself that nothing about those horrific numbers applied to us. We were one of those enviable white spots on the map of the country that showed few if any COVID cases. Engaging in the same ki...
The annual build-up of anticipation for New Year’s Day is, I think, the clearest proof of mankind’s eternal, stalwart and irrational optimistic nature. How many times have we said it or heard it: “Ugh, 2020 has been the worst. I can’t wait until it’s over.” As if, at the stroke of midnight heralding in Jan. 1, 2021, we will pass through a portal into a modern realm that’s as happy as a nuclear family in a 1950s sitcom, or maybe we’ll skip-jump into a brighter timeline in the...

Out our way, I rode a big bay quarter horse I called "Doc." His official name was "Goliath" as he stood 16½ hands high and weighed in at around 1,200-plus pounds. But I started calling him "Doc" because over the years I learned so much from him. I referred to him as my "Professor of Horse-Sense Theology" - and a great deal of what I share with you in these columns came from studying "theology under saddle." It is amazing the lessons that God can teach us through some...

You know, Lord, a New Year starts this week, help us keep the star in mind, the one the Wisemen followed as we read in Matthew 2:9 and 11: "And lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was ... they bowed down and worshipped him." The Christ Child! Christ is soon forgotten as the magic of Christmas fades away; the glitter of rosy cheeks pales again; but for a moment we understood. We discovered the presence...
A New Year starts, we need some hugs, hugs are so comforting. In these hard times we’re all alone, it pulls on our heart’s strings. Affection is feelings of love; sincere, special and warm. This joyfulness comes from above and calms most any storm. Hugs are welcome; by mail, believer; or hugged by a dear friend. We saw them at the Post Office with a moment to spend. Their loved one, too, also had passed; that care they also miss. But time moves on and so must we; though we have lost some bliss. We know Heaven’s expec...
