  • The beautiful poetry of SPAM

    Pam Burke|Updated Dec 30, 2016

It's probably too obvious to be worth mentioning, since I do write for part of my living, but I love words. The thing is that it's not just the words themselves — like how "unite" and "untie" have the same letters but the opposite meaning (what are the odds?). Or how one letter can have all the meaning in the world — compare public health to pubic health. Or the grammar of how your panda "eats shots and leaves" or it "eats, shoots, and leaves." It's also the visual pos...

  • Hello God, it's me, Mara

    Updated Dec 30, 2016

You know, Lord, a good New Year’s Resolution is to share our goals with our family — then we can work together toward accomplishing them. Oh! What IS family? A family is a needlepoint picture, threaded by people who are concerned with what kind of stitch fills the adjoining squares, who care about the overall design and who are anxious that the yarn be knot-free and strong. A family is a mobile, balanced but ever-changing, swinging free yet attached be a common string. A family is a first-aid kit, filled with bandages and sal...

  • Pastor's Corner: Moral issues: Racism

    Updated Dec 30, 2016

The mass shootings, the events in Syria, Iraq, Germany, Montana and all around the world, will we ever learn to follow the commandment to “Love one another?” To be honest, we all probably live with some negative thoughts about people and different races for a variety of reasons. There seems to be a growing attitude of prejudice, discrimination, segregation and racism, whether it be by religion, political divisions, ethnic group, skin color or one’s beliefs. Poverty, religious beliefs, human rights, immigration issues, refug...

  • OUT OUR WAY:

    Updated Dec 30, 2016

Out our way, some folks have different horses for different reasons. For example, a rodeo cowboy who does bulldogging has a horse that will run alongside a steer and keep it heading straight, and when the dogger goes off the side to grab the steers' horns and toss him on his back, the horse keeps going. He's trained for that. A calf-roping horse is different; that horse is trained to stay behind the calf and keep a steady pace with it. When the rope is thrown and snags the...

For the first time this season, the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team was looking to bounce back from a loss. And while the Lights needed a 16-0 run in the second half to pull away from the Vikings, MSU-N head...

  • George Ferguson Column: I'm getting old, but I won't forget 2016

    George Ferguson|Updated Dec 30, 2016

It’s been said, the older you get, the faster time goes by. I can’t really argue against that point, especially considering that I feel like 2016 came and went in the blink of an eye. In a way, that’s kind of sad, because, it was another great year, and with so many great things that happened the past 365 days, it’s hard to accept that it’s all a memory now. I mean, take sports out of the equation, and in 2016, I still had a big year. Got chased by a grizzly bear, lost near...
