    Stephen Real|Updated Dec 28, 2018

  • Road bill fine would improve access

    Updated Dec 28, 2018

Last fall during the political season, everyone running for the Montana Legislature touted their credentials as being for public access. But what does that really mean? For Montana’s hunters, anglers, hikers, and other outdoors enthusiasts, it means the ability to get to our public lands to enjoy them. The access to the outdoors that makes Montana such a great place to live also makes it tempting for some people to try to close off public roads. By putting up gates on public roads that lead to public land, they can turn v...

  • Letter to the Editor - A change is needed in the House

    Updated Dec 28, 2018

Thank God a group of Republican legislators have taken the initiative to rid Montana House of Representatives of a 30-year supermajority experiment that has contributed to hyper-partisanship disdained by most of Montana’s citizens. The Montana constitution defines only a few cases when a legislative supermajority vote is needed, for example, before spending trust funds, amending the constitution or overriding a governor’s veto. Nowhere does the constitution suggest the Legislature should adopt supermajority rules that lim...

    Pam Burke|Updated Dec 28, 2018

I know, the Christmas presents have been opened, half of them are already broken or the batteries drained. The tree and all the decorations have come down. The Christmas songs have been cut off, cold turkey, at midnight Dec. 25. It’s over. Christmas 2018 is finished. But before you throw it in the trashcan with the rest of the non-recyclables and move on, I have to bring up one Christmas-related news item that I just cannot believe I missed. An Omaha, Nebraska, school p...

  • TWIN TORNADO

    Chris Peterson|Updated Dec 28, 2018

TURNER - Growing up in Turner, playing basketball isn't really a choice. It's more just something you do, and when it comes to the Conlan twins, Rylee and Raegan, it was no different. The two girls, who are now seniors in high school, both said they have been playing, basically since they could dribble a basketball. "It was bad at first," Raegan Conlan said. • Our Our Way: The spring roundup

    Updated Dec 28, 2018

Out our way, even in the dead of winter, Charlie and I were looking forward to the spring roundup. Though we did it year after year, the changing from the old pasture to the new always seem to inspire a lift and a freshness of new beginnings. You could feel a whole new world opening up as we rounded up and then moved the cattle from the old, worn out brown winter pasture to the new, lush summer pasture. It seemed like there was new life flowing through us all as we went through the fence that divided the old from the new. It...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Dec 28, 2018

You know, Lord, J. F. Newton wrote, “Only God could have thought of Christmas. Its beauty is beyond the intelligence of mortals, so simple in its sublimity, so homey, yet so heavenly. It is a scene to sanctify the world, as if to teach us that God enters the life of man by lowly doors, attended by starry ideals and simple shepherd sentiments. Yes, Christmas is both a fact and faith; but even if it were only a brief season of good-will, a holiday from the forgetfulness of others, or just a family festival, it would be w...
