We served 80 children this year; a 10 percent increase from 2019. Given all of the uncertainties the year brought us, I’m grateful for the unwavering commitment of the businesses and individuals that support the cause each year. Independence Bank, Bergren Transmission and Pacific Steel and Recycling are loyal partners that have kept the drive going since the beginning. New...

  • Looking out my Backdoor: Merry Christmas

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Dec 24, 2020

The phone rings. I grab my mask with one hand and the phone with the other. “Merry Christmas.” My new habit. Masking has become automatic. Before I leave the house I grab a mask, even if I’m going to the clothesline, expecting to see not one other person. I go masked. Just in case. I’m locked and loaded. In the holsters on the belt around my waist, a spray bottle of disinfectant rides on one hip and extra masks, gloves and a tape measure for distance — OK, the tape measure i...

I’m talking about a bonafide, paid day off, happy, happy, joyful day of celebration which every person on the planet can participate in wholeheartedly...

    George Ferguson|Updated Dec 24, 2020

You know the old saying "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em"? I was actually considering putting that saying to use for myself who it comes to the winter months. See, truth be told, I hate winter. So, I suppose the question could be posed: Then why do you live in Montana? The answer to that is, it's a love-hate thing. I love Montana and almost everything about being a Montanan, except for winter. And by winter, I mean those two or three months where it really is winter. The rest...

  • Pastor's Corner: God with us … Really!

    Updated Dec 24, 2020

As we celebrate Christmas and move toward the end of 2020, so many people are experiencing what Saint John of the Cross called the “dark night of the soul” — a time and/or season of life in which we are lonely, out of touch with God, and just struggling to get by day-by-day. It is during these times that we desperately need to move beyond thinking about God’s presence to experiencing it. Matthew 1:23 states 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translat...

  • Out Our Way: Thinking of mangers - Luke 2:1-20

    Updated Dec 24, 2020

Out our way, the trail for home always seems to take forever, but at the same time it is when the heart is lighter and the aches and pains of the day seem less. As I have noted before, ole Doc always seems to have a bit more zip in his gait, holds his head a bit higher, and certainly is in a better mood on the back trail, heading for the stable and manger. He knows what is waiting at the end of this day’s trail and it gives him great joy to know it. Naturally, “mangers” are a popular theme this time of year for those who r...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

Thank You, Lord, for the Christmas story in Luke, chapter two, where the Angle said to the shepherds, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people.” Below is a little poem that draws attention to that very specia...
